Every day, millions of people around the world depend on TomTom to make smarter decisions. The company designs and develops innovative products that make it easy for people to keep moving towards their goals.

Recognized as a global leader in navigation and mapping products, TomTom invented the Personal Navigation Device and has sold more than 78 million devices to date. It also provides real-time traffi c information services across 52 countries and a state-of-the-art fl eet management solution, which is used by more than 625,000 professional drivers.

More recently, TomTom has expanded into the sports market, successfully launching sport watches, action cameras and a unique fi tness tracker. Founded in 1991 and headquartered in Amsterdam, TomTom has more than 4,600 employees located in 58 offi ces across 35 countries.

TomTom, like many software companies, had mostly used a waterfall approach for developing and releasing its products. Development cycles were long, not just for building new products but also for releasing improvements based on customer demand.

James Janisse, Vice President of TomTom’s NDS Maps and Update Service, explains, “The length of our development cycles made it diffi cult to respond to customer feedback on our products in a timely manner. We needed to be able to build and launch new products and releases much more quickly.”

At the same time as increasing agility, the company wanted to decrease complexity. Reliant on manual tools and processes, TomTom’s development teams found it diffi cult to keep stakeholders up to date on progress. “Staff would often work late into the evening preparing reports for status meetings, which would be outdated almost immediately,” reveals Janisse.

From a management perspective, it was also diffi cult to get a clear view of defects and backlogs and their status, which had the potential to impact the quality and timing of future releases.

Following a reorganization, TomTom’s CEO set the company a challenge to become a world-class software organization within fi ve years. “It was a great opportunity to reinvent our development operations,” says Janisse. “With our existing tools, it was diffi cult to see the whole picture and not get lost in the detail. We needed better visibility of individual projects and overall programs to manage them effectively.”

Although a few teams within TomTom began their Agile journey in 2007, it was not until the spring of 2012 that the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe®) was adopted for a whole product unit. “One of the benefi ts of switching from waterfall development to Agile is that we can break down a complicated feature into its basic components and release them faster, which means we can build and provide products to customers more quickly than we could before,” comments Janisse.

To support its new development approach, the company also deployed CA Agile Central. As Janisse explains, “CA Agile Central gives us a clear view of a complex program of development, top to bottom, which we never had before. We can now check our feature fl ow and operations in minutes whereas compiling the information using our previous tools would take days.”

As well as providing a clear understanding of the development status for new customer offerings, CA Agile Central also helps TomTom effi ciently execute software releases and sprints for existing products.

For example, TomTom takes pride in responding to customer feedback by incorporating suggestions into future releases. New features or functionality can now be added to the next sprint and released within two months.

“We can now make changes every two weeks instead of every six months,” confi rms Janisse. “The timing for releases is also much more predictable – in the past, they might have been launched weeks or even months late.”

Greater transparency and control With CA Agile Central, TomTom’s internal customers and stakeholders have a real-time view of how development projects are progressing. They can see what new features will be added, or not, in a release as well as any backlog.

“There is now 100 percent transparency 24/7 for internal stakeholders,” explains Janisse. “Previously, software development was a ‘black box’, with the business not fully knowing what was coming until the door opened and the software was released internally. The software would then have to be verifi ed and validated, which took several months and slowed down time to market.”

To ensure new enhancements don’t have a negative impact on existing products, TomTom undertakes rigorous tests on a daily basis. Since deploying CA Agile Central, the team has automated more than 6,000 tests, including regression cycles. In the past, it took four weeks to run just one regression cycle due to the manual effort involved.

Using CA Agile Central for development planning, execution and reporting has helped to transform how TomTom innovates and launches new products.
