Finally the relationship between photography and painting is turned around. After all the photography that looks like painting, for the first time a painting that looks like a photograph. ‘uncle Theo’ this small panel is called.

uncle Theo himself is not in the picture, just a small piece of a wall in his house, painted by his cousin Thijs Jansen. Size 20 x 15 cm, oil and acrylic paint. So smartly done in a conceptual sense. A tiny homage to the tiny and vernacular. done awfully skilled as well, your eyes keep on checking: is the postcard taped on the painted piece, wall paper or is it itself painted too?I came across ‘uncle Theo’ in January at the realism Art Fair in Amsterdam, gallery Fred Wagemans Kunstruimte. did not buy it then. But it keeps coming back. Now I write about it. Must have been sold already. Let’s try and mail the gallery. Though it is Sunday I get a quick reply: It is still for sale. The first photograph I buy!
