“Fire is a privileged phenomenon which can explain anything. If all that changes slowly may be explained by life, all that changes quickly is explained by fire. Fire is the ultra living element. It is intimate and universal. (…) It is a tutelary and terrible divinity, both good and bad. It can contradict itself; thus it is one of the principles of universal explanation”. (Gaston Bachelard, The Psychoanalysis of Fire, 1937)
The introduction of objects in painting, first with collage and then with assemblage, was one of the radical acts of painters in the early 20th century because since then, as Guillaume Apollinaire wrote already in 1913: “one may paint with what one likes, with pipes, stamps, postcards, playing cards, candlesticks, bits of oilcloth, collars, wall paper, daily papers. (…) I am not afraid of Art and have no prejudices concerning the materials used by painters”. Less than half a century later it was no longer the image of things that was being challenged, but precisely their materiality: Alberto Burri’s combustions – exhibited for the first time in 1957 – first tackled painting itself – in 1955 – by burning wood applied to the surface of the work and then, as of 1957, by replacing the opacity of the support with the transparency of synthetic films and disavowing the gesture of the painter – even if the latter had taken on a radical character at the time, from Hartung to Pollock – in favour of the unpredictable and indelible mark of the flame.
The elements thus became, in their own way, the painter’s instruments. Painting, as Giulio Carlo Argan pointed out already

A few minutes later it collapsed.

The profile of Bernard Aubertin in the background of one of his “pyromaniacal delirium” in 1971.
Sovrapposti
o giustapposti, questi materiali e il
loro valore di contrasto rivelano un
registro cromatico sottile ed esteso.
Perciò, per costruire i miei quadri
di fuoco, ho scelto l’alluminio
come materiale da contrapporre
al legno dei fiammiferi. Inoltre,
l’alluminio presenta il vantaggio,
per la realizzazione pratica, di
isolare dalla fiamma il supporto
di legno necessario alla tenuta dei
fiammiferi.
Mechanized structure and making of fire: an assessment of my “pyromaniac” activity
In May 1961, after two years of red
monochrome painting, I realized
my first fire painting featuring the
experimentation of a new creative
activity: that of making fire.
It is clear that the assembly of
various kinds of materials (wood,
glass, iron, stone etc.) on any
support is pleasing to the eye and
elicits an emotion in us. Whether
superimposed or juxtaposed, these
materials and the contrast between
them reveal a subtle and extended
chromatic register. To construct
my fire paintings I have therefore
chosen aluminium as a material
that is the opposite to the wood
of the matches. Aluminium has
another advantage for purposes of
the practical realization: it isolates
the wooden support necessary to
hold the matches from the flames.
Finally, I have found it very useful
because it reflects the fire.

saremmo tenuti a dire, in un
tribunale: “ho raccontato talmente
tanti falsi aneddoti che non ho più
ricordi di gioventù”; ma Boltanski
(o C.B., secondo il suo alter-ego
romanzesco) è l’unico a puntare
il dito sull’equivalenza del vero
e del falso, della memoria e
dell’oblio. Simili agli incatenati
della caverna (si sarà capito che
non si poteva fare a meno di
dirlo) che credono alla realtà del
mondo sensibile, contempliamo
nemmeno dei simulacri ma la loro
immagine, la loro ombra portata
sul muro, prodotte da un fuoco di
cui ignoriamo l’esistenza. La serie
delle Ombres (Ombre) di Boltanski
interviene così nella continuità
di un lavoro di presa di distanza
e di manipolazione: la messa in
The shades
The organization of one’s existence
in a simulacrum is truer than most
biographies, because it enunciates
the fatuity of biographies: placed
before a court, we would all have
to admit: “I have told so many
false anecdotes that I have no
more memories of my youth”; but
Boltanski (or C.B., according to
his fictitious alter-ego) is alone
in pointing out the equivalence
between truth and falsehood,
between memory and of oblivion.
Similar to the persons chained in
a cave (it will become clear that
we could not but mention it) who
believed in the reality of the physical
world, we do not even contemplate
the simulacra but their image, their
shade cast on the wall, produced by
the fire whose existence we ignore.
Boltanski’s Ombres (Shades)
series thus intervenes in the
continuity of a work of dissociation
and manipulation: the Platonic
challenge is here rendered in the

pas qu’une question d’esthétique.
Je m’intéresse davantage aux
nombreuses couches de son histoire,
ses connotations culturelles,
sociales, économiques et politiques,
son rôle en tant que véhicule et
« envahisseur » dans le processus

des contextes culturels différents qui
causent des malentendus etc. Tout
ceci se trouve derrière l’apparence

ému par une merveilleuse citation

strati della storia dell’oggetto.
Le sue connotazioni culturali,

il suo ruolo in quanto veicolo
e “invasore” nel processo di
globalizzazione, la sua natura
in quanto elemento provocatore

“esperienza vissuta” con l’uomo,
il suo ciclo di vita come metafora

in contesti culturali diversi che

ecc. Tutto questo si trova dietro
l’apparenza esteriore di un oggetto.
Sono stato molto commosso da
una meravigliosa citazione di

Its cultural, social, economic

Robin White – Vous avez souvent
R.W. – Prenons l’exemple de
l’œuvre représentant une femme
recouverte d’une couverture,
au pied de laquelle est attaché un
bec Bunsen allumé : Peut-on y voir
une référence à la punition ?
J.K. – Non. Pas du tout. Ce travail
possède simultanément des
qualités d’équilibre et de rupture
d’équilibre. C’est un peu comme
un acrobate qui avance en
équilibre, qui marche sur…
R.W. – …Sur une corde raide.
Ah ! oui.
J.K. – On peut voir dans une église

Robin White – Lei ha usato molto
spesso il fuoco nel suo lavoro.
Me ne potrebbe parlare?
Jannis Kounellis – Il problema del
fuoco è un problema particolare.
Il mio interesse per questo
elemento non risiede soltanto nel
fuoco come problema, ma anche
nei suoi riferimenti con le leggende
medievali. Il fuoco nelle leggende
medievali si identifica con il castigo
e la purificazione.
R.W. – Per esempio, lei fece un
lavoro in cui una torcia col fuoco
è legata al piede di una donna
avvolta da una coperta. C’entra
il castigo?
J.K. – Assolutamente no. Questo
lavoro racchiude qualità di
equilibrio e di una pari perdita di
equilibrio. È come un acrobata che
stia in equilibrio, che cammina su…
R.W. – …una corda tesa. Sì!
J.K. – Nelle chiese medievali
ci sono delle pitture sul muro
che raffigurano da un lato la Terra
e dall’altro il Paradiso. Tra i due c’è
un ponte strettissimo, sotto
Robin White – You have used fire
in your work very often. Can you tell
me about this?
Jannis Kounellis – The problem
of fire is a special one. I am not only
interested in fire as a problem, but
also in its association with Medieval
legends: in this tradition, fire is
identified with chastisement and
purification.
R.W. – For instance, you made a
work with a lit torch tied to the foot
of a woman wrapped in a blanket.
Does this have anything to do with
chastisement?
J.K. – By no means. The work
features qualities of equilibrium,
and to an equal extent loss of
equilibrium. It is like an acrobat
who is balancing, who is walking
on…
R.W. – …a tightrope. Yes!
J.K. – There are wall paintings
in Medieval churches where the
Earth is depicted on one side, and
Paradise on the other. There is a
very narrow bridge between the
two, and the flames of Hell burn

Claudio Parmiggiani
Claudio Parmiggiani fotographié au Teatro Metastasio de Prato en l’occasion de la réalisation des scénographies du Faust en 2004 / Claudio Parmiggiani ritratto al Teatro Metastasio di Prato in occasione della realizzazione delle scenografie di Faust nel 2004 / Claudio Parmiggiani portrayed at the Metastasio Theatre of Prato on the occasion of the creation of the sets for Faust in 2004.
Parmiggiani croit à la valeur
magique des images. Que derrière
leur apparence, elles possèdent
un sens caché. Que toute
expérience esthétique recouvre une
herméneutique qui est d’autant
plus complexe que l’expérience
esthétique est forte. (…)
Dans ce labyrinthe où mes yeux
cherchent un sens, c’est à la
rencontre de moi-même que
j’avance. Tous ces membra disjecta
que la latinité a fait échouer sur
les rivages du monde moderne ne
sont que les reliques d’un corps
que mon regard parvient peu à
peu à reconstruire. Dans cette
discontinuité, cette discordance
aussi, le regard singulier parvient à
se frayer une unité.
Mutus Liber (1976) peut être lu
comme la théâtralisation de
l’expérience herméneutique. On
peut citer, à propos de cette œuvre,
l’injonction de C.D. Friedrich que
Parmiggiani rappelle lui-même au
cours de son entretien avec Arturo
Schwarz : « Clos ton œil physique
Parmiggiani crede al valore magico
delle immagini. Che dietro la loro
apparenza, esse siano dotate di
un significato nascosto. Che ogni
esperienza estetica racchiuda
un’ermeneutica che è tanto più
complessa quanto l’esperienza
estetica è forte. (…)
In questo labirinto in cui i miei
occhi cercano un senso, è verso
l’incontro con me stesso che
procedo. Tutte queste membra
poco a poco, a ricostruire. In questa
discontinuità, questa discordanza
anche, lo sguardo singolare arriva
a rintracciare una unità.
Mutus Liber (1976) può essere
letto come la teatralizzazione
dell’esperienza ermeneutica. Si può
citare, a proposito di quest’opera,
il monito di C.D. Friedrich, che lo
stesso Parmiggiani ricorda nel
corso della sua conversazione
con Arturo Schwarz: “Chiudi il
Parmiggiani believes in the magic
value of images; that they possess
a hidden meaning behind their
appearance. That every aesthetic
experience encloses a hermeneutic
which is as complex as the
aesthetic experience is strong. (…)
In this labyrinth in which my eyes
look for a meaning, it is towards a
meeting with myself that I proceed.
All these membra disjecta which
Latinity has left shipwrecked on
the shores of the modern world
are merely the rests of a body
that my gaze succeeds, little by
little, in reconstructing. In this
discontinuity, and this discordance,
the singular gaze eventually
retraces a unity.
Mutus Liber (1976) may be read
as a theatrical staging of the
hermeneutic experience. We may
quote, in connection to his work,
the admonition of C.D. Friedrich,
which Parmiggiani himself
remembers during his conversation
with Arturo Schwarz: “Close your
physical eye, so that you see your

Io incollo i manifesti, poi li

includes a text by him: “Tearing

is new, unpredictable forms.
I have abandoned easel painting
for this protest… If I were to glue
colours, in various forms, onto
pieces of cardboard, choosing
them as if from a palette, I would
solve problems of taste with the
help of a crafts technique. I tear
the posters, first from the wall and
then from the base of the painting:
what a lot of tastes, fantasies
and interests that accumulate,
clash with one another and are
alternated from the first tear to the
