SAVING THIS PLANET

For the last one hundred years the climate has been growing much warmer. According to the national Academy of Sciences, the earth’s surface temperature has risen by approximately 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming is due to human activities. These activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the accumulation of greenhouse gases-carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. This has a number of different effects. Since the beginning of the 20th century, glaciers have been melting very rapidly. For example, the Muir Glacier in Alaska, has retreated two miles in ten years. Secondly, rising temperatures have been causing the snow line to retreat on mountains all over the world. In Peru, for example it has risen as much as 900 meters in sixty years. As a result of this, vegetation has also been changing. In Canada, the agricultural cropline has shifted 50 to 100 miles northward. Similarly, cool-climate trees such as birches and spruce have been dying over large areas of Eastern Canada. In Sweden the treeline has moved up the mountains as much as 20 meters since 1930. The distribution of wildlife has also been affected. Many European animals have moved northwards into Scandinavia. Since 1918, twenty-five new species of birds have been seen in Greenland, and in the United States birds have moved their nests to the north. Finally, the sea has been rising at a rapidly increasing rate, mostly due, as mentioned previously, to the melting of glaciers. In the last eighteen years it has risen about fifteen centimetres, which is about four times the rate of rise during the last 9000 years. Many countries in the world are beginning to worry about the problem and very little has been done towards the climate changing problem. Venezuela for example, has very recently signed the Kyoto Protocol and eliminated the consumption of polluting petrol. But the United Sates refused to signed this important agreement and continues its irresponsible oil contaminating consumption.

En los últimos cien años el clima se ha vuelto más caliente. De acuerdo a la Academia Nacional de Ciencias, la temperatura de la superficie de la tierra se ha incrementado aproximadamente 1 grado Fahrenheit en el siglo pasado, con calentamiento acelerado durante las dos décadas pasadas. Hay una nueva y fuerte evidencia de que la mayoría del calentamiento es producto de las actividades humanas. Estas actividades han alterado la composición química de la atmósfera a través de la acumulación de gases efecto invernadero de dióxido de carbono, metano y oxido nitroso. Esto tiene un número de efectos diferentes. Desde el comienzo del siglo veinte, los glaciares se han ido derritiendo muy rápidamente. Por ejemplo, el glaciar Muir en Alaska, ha

retrocedido dos millas en diez años. Secundariamente, el incremento de temperatura ha causado que la línea de nieve retroceda sobre todas las montañas alrededor del mundo. En Perú, por ejemplo esto se ha incrementado tanto como 900 metros en 60 años. Como resultado, la vegetación ha estado cambiando. En Canadá, En Canadá, la línea de cultivo agrícola se ha desplazado 50 a 100 millas hacia el norte. Del mismo modo, los árboles de clima frío como abedules y abetos han muerto en grandes áreas del este de Canadá. Muchos países en el mundo están empezando a preocuparse por el problema y muy poco se ha hecho hacia el problema de cambio climático. Venezuela, por ejemplo, ha firmado recientemente el Protocolo de Kyoto y se elimino el consumo de contaminantes de la gasolina. Pero Estados Unidos se negó a firmar este importante acuerdo y el consumo irresponsable de su combustible continúa contaminando

COMPUTERS: THE DRUG OF THE FUTURE.

Computers have gradually revolutionized our lives. In the future, we will see many more changes and a faster rate. The postal system will virtually disappear. Communications will be done through the computer. Libraries will become obsolete. Information will be obtained via network. A computer doctor will give you a diagnosis and recommend the most efficient treatment. Teachers too will be substituted by learning machines, and children won’t have to go to the school anymore. Students will interact with their classmates via the computer. Many of these technologies are already in use. For many years, airline companies have been training their pilots in simulators. Medical schools have been using computer simulators to train doctors and surgeons. Companies and individuals all over the world are communicating with each other using the computer network Internet.

Computers have become part of our daily lives, and some people can not live without them. They become addicted to the screen and to the multitude of video games and simulations that the computer provides. The latest is Virtual Reality. You put on a special headset and you become part of the action: there you are on the track racing against world champions , you’re a martial arts master beating up a street gang or you’re a space explorer on a mission to a distant galaxy.

The most famous computer addict in the world is Kevin Mitnik. His problems began when at the age of 16 when he got his first micro. He was a shy boy and had difficulties in making friends. He preferred the company of the computer to other boys and girls. He became an expert in computers, and in 1988 he was arrested for breaking into company systems and stealing confidential information. Mitnik spent a year in a clinic for drugged people. His drug: the computer. During that period, he was not allowed to go near a computer or a telephone. When he came out, he went back to his old vice and was arrested again for stealing systems and possessing the numbers of 20.000 credit cards.

Las computadoras están revolucionando gradualmente nuestras vidas. En el futuro, nosotros podriamos precenciar muchos más cambios a gran velocidad. Los sistemas postales podrían practicamente desaparecer. Las comunicaciones podrian ser hechas a través de las computadoras. Las librerias quedaran obsoletas. La información será obtenida por la red. Una computadora doctor te dará un diagnostico y recomendara el tratamiento más eficiente. Los profesores tambien serán sustituidos por maquinas de aprendizaje, y los chicos no tendran que ir al colegio más. Los estudiantes podrian interactuar con sus compañeros de clases utilizando la computadora. Muchas de estas tecnologias estan ya en uso. Durante muchos años, las compañias aereas han formado a sus pilotos con simuladores. Las escuelas medicas han estado utilizando simuladores informaticos para capacitar a medicos y cirujanos. Compañias y personas de todo el mundo se comunican entre si mediante la red informática internet.

Las computadoras se han convertido en parte de nuestra vidas diarias, y algunas personas no pueden vivir sin ellas. Se convierten en adictos a la pantalla y a la cantidad de video juegos y simulacros que la computadora proporciona. Lo más reciente es la realidad virtual. Te colocas un casco especial y te conviertes en parte de la acción: Te encuentras en la pista de carreras contra el campeón del mundo, eres un maestro de artes marciales y podras golpear a una pandilla callejera o eres un explorador espacial en una misión a una distante galaxia.

El adicto a la computadora más famoso en el mundo es Kevin Mitnik. Sus problemas comenzaron cuando consiguió su primer micro a la edad de 16 años. Era un muchacho tímido y tenia dificultades para hacer amigos. Él prefería la compañía de la computadora a otros niños y niñas. Se convirtió en un experto en computadoras, y en 1988 fue arrestado por irrumpir en los sistemas de la empresa donde trabajaba y robar información confidencial. Mitnik pasó un año en una clínica para personas adictas. Su droga: el ordenador. Durante ese período, no se le permitió acercarse a un ordenador o un teléfono. Cuando salió, regresó a su viejo vicio y fue arrestado de nuevo por el robo de sistemas y por poseer los números de 20.000 tarjetas de crédito.

Esta lectura pone de manifiesto el proceso preocupante por el que está atravesando nuestro planeta. Las actividades humanas han dañado nuestro planeta azul y nosotros estamos sufriendo las consecuencias de nuestra inconciencia y falta de amor por nuestro hábitat. Esta lectura nos llama a reflexionar para valorar el medio ambiente y cuidarlo.
