1.3METHODOLOGYMODHEOLAÍOCHT

The TV/Film Industry survey was distributed via an online survey questionnaire through SurveyMonkey. This was aimed at those currently working in the industry in Ireland including those in the early stages of their career to the well established.

Departments that were addressed were: • Acting• Art Department• Camera Department• Costume Design• Directing Department• Editing Department• Hair & Make-Up Department• Lighting Department• Producer • Production Department• Script Department• Sound Department• Other

Questionnaire DesignDearadh An Cheistneora

In order to cater the questionnaire specifically to each department, multiple professionals from each of the 12 included departments were consulted with during the design of the survey. They assisted in creating a list of useful and necessary skills and techniques relevant to their specific department.

These suggestions were then listed in the skills sections of the survey along with an option for respondents to list training/skills that may not have been listed.

Past surveys conducted by Galway Film Centre and Screen Training Ireland were also researched to guide the design.

During the design, numerous amendments to the survey were made that included adding in open-ended questions, which allowed respondents to be able to speak more freely on the topics of interests, obstacles, trends and other areas.

This information was formatted into an online survey using Survey Monkey. This tool provides many options for: weighting questions; using open and closed questions; and presenting the information in as simple a way as possible. This was particularly important as we were aware that many respondents would access the survey on their smartphones, rather than a desktop computer.

7

Other DepartmentsRannóga Eile

Participants were also offered to select the department category ‘Other’ for those who were not part of the 12 offered departments. The ‘Other’ departments mentioned included Journalism, IT, Directing Theatre, Location Work, Vision Engineering/Outside Broadcasting, Lighting Electrician, Stunts, Unit Manager, Cinema Management, Storyboard Artist for Animation, Design, Arts Officer, Supply & Production Facilitation, Documentary and Administration.

Some respondents noted that they worked across more than one department such as Acting & Directing Theatre, Acting & Script, Commissioning & Producing, Camera, Editing & Production and Lighting Electrician and Vision Engineering.

DistributionDáileadh The survey was available as a hyperlink. This was shared via Galway Film Centre and Gréasán na Méans’ websites, as well as their social media networks. It was also emailed to their databases twice. It was possible for individuals to copy the link and share amongst their own network. We also contacted companies directly and asked them to distribute the link to their staff.

Contacts from departments that had a low number of respondents were then followed up in the final week of the survey.

In total, the survey received 274 respondents.

While the survey was accessible to participants from all around Ireland, the majority tended to be from the West, due to the fact that this is where both Galway Film Centre and Gréasán na Méan and the majority of those in the databases are based.

Data Analysis And ReportingAnailís Agus Tuairisciú Sonraí

This report summarises the findings from the survey comparing department to department as well as sub-groups such as gender, age, employment status, language capabilities and geographical location.

Note that there may be instances where the sum of the percentages may not equal 100% as the percentages are rounded.
