Hey jij daar! Welkom op de examentraining Engels VMBO! Het woord examentraining zegt het al: trainen voor je examen. Tijdens deze training behandelen we de examenstof in blokken en oefenen we ermee. Daarnaast besteden we ook veel aandacht aan de vaardigheden voor je examen; je leert handigheidjes, krijgt uitleg over de meest voorkomende vragen en leert uit welke onderdelen een goed antwoord bestaat. Verder gaan we in op hoe je de stof het beste kunt aanpakken, hoe je verder komt als je het even niet meer weet en vooral ook hoe je zorgt dat je overzicht houdt. Naast de grote hoeveelheid informatie die je krijgt, ga je zelf ook aan de slag met examenvragen. Tijdens het oefenen hiervan zijn er genoeg trainers beschikbaar om je verder te helpen, zodat je leert werken met de goede strategie om je examen aan te pakken. Hierbij is de manier van werken belangrijk, maar je kunt natuurlijk altijd inhoudelijke vragen stellen; ook over de onderdelen die niet klassikaal behandeld worden. Voor iedere vraag zijn er uiteraard uitwerkingen beschikbaar, maar gebruik deze informatie naar eigen inzicht. Vergeet niet dat je op je examen ook geen uitwerkingen krijgt. Sommige vragen worden klassikaal besproken, andere vragen moet je zelf nakijken. Mocht je nog meer willen oefenen na deze examentraining, neem dan een kijkje op www.examentraining.nl. Daar vind je oude examens en ons lesmateriaal van vorig jaar. Na de tips volgen het programma voor vandaag en de bijbehorende opgaven. We verwachten niet dat je alle opgaven binnen de tijd af krijgt, maar probeer steeds zo ver mogelijk te komen. Als je niet verder komt, vraag dan om hulp! We willen je graag leren hoe je er wél uit kunt komen. Tips en trics bij het voorbereiden en tijdens je examens Examens voorbereiden Tip 1: Heb vertrouwen in jezelf Laat je niet gek maken door uitspraken als “Nu komt het er op aan”. Het examen is een afsluiting van je hele schoolperiode. Je hebt er dus jaren naartoe gewerkt en hebt in die tijd veel kennis en kunde opgedaan om examen te kunnen doen. In al die jaren ben je nooit wakker geworden om vervolgens te ontdekken dat al je kennis was verdwenen. De beste garantie voor succes is voorbereiden, en dat is nu net wat je al die jaren op school hebt gedaan. Heb vooral vertrouwen in jezelf! Tip 2: Bereid je goed voor Om jezelf goed voor te bereiden op je eindexamen maak je een planning, leer je de stof en oefen je met vragen. Hoe pak je dit nou het beste aan? Begin allereerst met het maken van een overzicht van alle stof en een planning. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld een schema maken met daarin alle hoofdstukken die je moet leren en welke onderwerpen daarbij horen. Daarbij schrijf je wanneer je welk onderdeel gaat leren. Als je aan de slag gaat met leren, zorg dat je op tijd begint en plan dan niet teveel studie-uren achter elkaar. Pauzes zijn noodzakelijk, maar zorg ervoor dat ze kort blijven, anders moet je iedere keer opnieuw opstarten. Wissel verschillende vakken af en wissel het leren af met oefenen. Op die manier kun je je beter concentreren en leer je effectiever. Wat je concentratie (en je planning) ook ten goede komt, is leren op vaste tijdstippen. Tip 3: Leer alsof je examens zit te maken Oefenen voor je examen bestaat natuurlijk ook uit het voorbereiden op de situatie zelf. Dit betekent dat je je leeromgeving zoveel mogelijk moet laten lijken op je examensituatie. Zorg dus voor zo min mogelijk afleiding (lees: leg je telefoon weg) en maak je tafel zo leeg mogelijk. Maak ook een keer een proefexamen met een timer of eierwekker erbij, zodat je weet hoe het is om voor langere tijd een examen te maken en zodat je weet hoe je je tijd het beste in kunt delen. Tip 4: Herhaal de geleerde stof Belangrijk is om alle leerstof te herhalen! Wat heb je de vorige dagen ook alweer geleerd? Door te herhalen blijft de stof langer in je hoofd (lange termijn geheugen) en verklein je de kans dat je het weer vergeet. Zorg dat je de dag vóór het examen geen nieuwe stof meer hoeft te leren en dat je alles nog even doorneemt en herhaalt. Tip 5: Leer op verschillende manieren (lezen, schrijven, luisteren, zien en uitspreken) Alleen maar lezen in je boek verandert al snel in staren in je boek zonder dat je nog wat opneemt. Wissel het lezen van de stof in je boek dus af met het schrijven van een samenvatting. Let op dat je in een samenvatting alleen belangrijke punten overneemt, zodat het ook echt een samenvatting wordt. Kijk ook eens op Youtube, daar zijn talloze filmpjes te zien waarin de stof duidelijk wordt uitgelegd. Maak daar gebruik van, want op die manier komt de stof nog beter binnen omdat je er naar hebt kunnen luisteren. Met mindmaps zorg je er voor dat je de stof voor je kunt zien en kunt overzien. Het werkt tot slot heel goed om de stof aan iemand uit te leggen die de stof minder goed beheerst dan jij. Door uit te spreken waar de stof over gaat merk je vanzelf waar je nog even in moet duiken en welke onderdelen je prima beheerst. Mindmap:

Goed voor jezelf zorgen! Tip 1: Zorg voor voldoende beweging Eigenlijk is leren net als topsport: het vergt een goede voorbereiding, planning, rust, oefenen en concentratie. Om een goede prestatie te leveren, is het belangrijk dat je je fit voelt. Sporten en bewegen tussen het leren door en aan het einde van de dag is daarom aan te raden. Het doorbreekt de sleur van het leren, brengt zuurtstof naar de hersenen, zorgt voor ontspanning en dat je je weer opgeladen voelt om verder te gaan met leren. Tip 2: Zorg voor een goede balans tussen spanning en ontspanning Om een goede prestatie te leveren is er een goede balans nodig tussen spanning en ontspanning. Spanning zorgt ervoor dat je alert bent en ontspanning zorgt ervoor dat je je aandacht erbij kan houden. Teveel spanning is niet goed en teveel ontspanning ook niet. Als je merkt dat je té ontspannen bent en dat daardoor je concentratie en motivatie weg zijn, probeer dan voor jezelf doelen te stellen. Slagen met een 8 gemiddeld bijvoorbeeld, dan komt die gezonde spanning vanzelf. Als je té gespannen bent, probeer dan eens of mindfulness iets is voor jou of ga lekker sporten. Tip 3: Zorg voor voldoende slaap Een nachtje doorblokken is geen slim idee. Je hebt namelijk slaap nodig om goed te kunnen functioneren en concentreren. Bovendien, tijdens je slaap wordt alle geleerde informatie van die dag vastgelegd in je geheugen. Langdurig onthouden lukt dus beter als je na het leren gaat slapen, in plaats van eindeloos door te blijven leren. Tip 4: Zorg dat je goed eet en drinkt Het onderzoek naar het verband tussen voeding en geheugen staat weliswaar nog in de kinderschoenen, toch weten we al een aantal handige dingen daarover.

En waarom zou je daar geen gebruik van maken? Zo is het inmiddels duidelijk dat je hersenen veel energie nodig hebben in periodes van examens, dus ontbijt elke dag goed. Let dan wel op wat je eet, want brood, fruit en pinda’s leveren meer langdurige energie dan koekjes en snoep. Koffie en thee bevatten cafeïne, wat kan zorgen voor een betere concentratie. Drink er echter niet teveel van; het kan je onrustig maken. En dan het examen zelf De dag is eindelijk gekomen. Je bent er klaar voor en de examens worden uitgedeeld. Je mag beginnen! Tip 1: Blijf rustig en denk aan de strategieën die je hebt geleerd Wat doe je tijdens het examen? - Lees rustig alle vragen - Blijf niet te lang hangen bij een vraag waar je het antwoord niet op weet - Schrijf zoveel mogelijk op maar…. voorkom wel dat je onzinverhalen gaat schrijven. Dat kost uiteindelijk meer tijd dan dat het je aan punten gaat opleveren. - Noem precies het aantal antwoorden, de redenen, de argumenten, de voorbeelden die worden gevraagd. Schrijf je er meer, dan worden die niet meegerekend en dat is natuurlijk zonde van de tijd. - Vul bij meerkeuzevragen maar één antwoord in. Verander je je antwoord, geef dit dan duidelijk aan. - Ga je niet haasten, ook al voel je tijdsdruk. Tussendoor even een mini-pauze nemen is alleen maar goed voor je concentratie. - Let niet op wat klasgenoten doen. Sommige van hen zullen al snel klaar zijn, maar trek je daar niets van aan en ga rustig verder. - Heb je tijd over? Controleer dan of je volledig antwoord hebt gegeven op álle vragen. Hoe saai het ook is, het is belangrijk, je kunt immers gemakkelijk per ongeluk een (onderdeel van een) vraag overslaan. - Tot slot: bedenk van tevoren of je thuis je antwoorden van het zojuist gemaakte examen wilt nakijken. Hoe reageer je als blijkt dat je veel fouten hebt? Heeft dit negatieve of juist positieve invloed op het leerwerk voor de examens die nog komen gaan? Tip 2: Los een eventuele black-out op met afleiding Mocht je toch een black-out krijgen, bedenk dan dat je kennis echt niet verdwenen is. Krampachtig blijven nadenken versterkt de black-out alleen maar verder. Het beste is om even iets anders te gaan doen. Ga even naar de WC of leg gewoon even je pen neer. Als je goed bent voorbereid, zit de kennis in je hoofd en komt het vanzelf weer boven. En mocht het bij die ene vraag toch niet lukken, bedenk dan dat je niet alle vragen goed hoeft te hebben om toch gewoon je examen te halen.

Hoe pak je open vragen en meerkeuzevragen aan? Een examen bestaat vaak uit een mix van open en meerkeuzevragen. Je hebt verschillende strategieën om tot het juiste antwoord te komen. Bij meerkeuzevragen gaat het erom dat je de juiste uitspraak of bewering kiest, bij meerkeuzevragen is het belangrijk dat je antwoord geeft op de vraag, dat je volledig bent of dat je de juiste berekening toepast. Meerkeuzevragen Veel leerlingen vinden meerkeuzevragen lastig. Er staan namelijk vaak meerdere antwoordmogelijkheden die op elkaar lijken. Hoe pak je zo’n vraag nou het handigste aan? Tip 1: Omcirkel en streep de foute antwoorden weg Lees de vraag goed en omcirkel eventueel de belangrijkste kernwoorden uit de vraag. Vervolgens kun je het beste eerst nagaan welk antwoord je zelf zou geven. Daarna vergelijk je dat met alle antwoordmogelijkheden die er staan. Vaak kun je dan al de twee meest foute antwoord wegstrepen. Er blijven dan nog twee antwoorden over. Lees de vraag nogmaals en bekijk welk antwoord van de twee overgebleven antwoorden het meest volledig is. Tip 2: Blijf bij je gevoel Het komt je vast bekend voor: je krijgt een toets terug, waarbij je ziet dat je het goede antwoord toch nog op het laatst hebt veranderd in een antwoord dat fout blijkt te zijn. Daarom: je eerste ingeving blijkt meestal te kloppen. Verander je antwoord alleen als het een extreem wilde gok was, als je nieuwe inzichten hebt gekregen of als je de vraag per ongeluk verkeerd hebt gelezen. Tip 3: Gok als je het antwoord niet weet Het kan natuurlijk gebeuren dat je het antwoord echt niet weet op de vraag. Gok in dat geval het antwoord, wie weet gok je goed. Je hebt immers een kans van 1 op 4 en misschien zelfs groter als je een fout antwoord hebt weg kunnen strepen. Als je moet gokken, kun je dat ‘slim doen’:

- Streep foute antwoorden eerst weg

- Let op woorden als ‘altijd’, ‘nooit’ of ‘in geen enkel geval’. Vaak zijn die fout.

- Laat je niet leiden door de langste zin of het meest ingewikkelde antwoorden.

- Heb je bij je vorige vragen al drie keer A geantwoord, trek je daar niets van aan. Een

vierde keer A kan ook gewoon.

- Bekijk welke antwoorden sterk op elkaar lijken, vaak is een van die twee antwoorden

juist.

Open vragen Tip 1: Wees volledig Het komt vaak voor dat vragen niet volledig worden beantwoord en dat je daardoor niet alle punten voor die vraag krijgt. Kijk daarom goed wat er precies gevraagd wordt. Let op woorden als: ‘leg uit’, ‘verklaar’, ‘waarom’ etc. Als er gevraagd wordt naar twee redenen, let er dan op dat je ook echt twee redenen geeft. Als je er meer geeft, tellen die niet mee. Nadat je het antwoord hebt opgeschreven, lees de vraag dan nog even door en kijk of je volledig bent geweest. Tip 2: Haal informatie uit de bronnen Vaak krijg je bij een vraag een bron erbij. Dit kan een kaart, afbeelding, grafiek, tabel of afbeelding zijn. Het goed bestuderen van de bron kan je al een eind op weg helpen in het beantwoorden van de vraag. Wat zie ik eigenlijk? Wat is de titel? Wat geeft de bron weer? Is

er een legenda? Wat staat er op de x-as en y-as? Welke eenheden zijn er gebruikt? Wie is de maker? Staat er een jaartal bij? Tip 3: Schrijf tussenstappen op Je krijgt niet alleen punten voor het juiste antwoord, ook de tussenberekeningen leveren punten op. Het is jammer om die punten te verliezen, terwijl je wel weet hoe het moet. Tip 4: Schrijf nuttige informatie op Weet je het antwoord op de vraag niet, maar weet je wel iets nuttigs te melden over de vraag? Schrijf maar op! Vaak krijg je hier ook punten voor. Zorg er wel voor dat het relevant blijft en dat je geen onzin op gaat schrijven. Tip 5: Zorg dat je alles nog even controleert Je hebt de laatste vraag gemaakt en het liefst wil je zo snel mogelijk naar huis. Blijf toch nog even zitten en controleer je toets nog even. Heb je niet per ongeluk een vraag overgeslagen? Heb je antwoord gegeven op de vraag? Zijn je antwoorden leesbaar? Ben je nog iets vergeten?

Introductie

Het examen Engels

Voor het Centraal Examen Engels krijg je 2 uur de tijd. Het examen bestaat uit een

leesgedeelte en een schrijfgedeelte. De bedoeling is dat je bij het lezen begrijpt wat de

schrijver wil overbrengen. Er kunnen verschillende tekstsoorten op het examen voorkomen.

Daarnaast moet je een brief kunnen schrijven. Dat is om te controleren of jij in staat bent om

een brief te schrijven in het Engels. Het zou in de toekomst wel eens voor kunnen komen dat

je deze vaardigheden toe moet passen.

Het leesgedeelte bestaat uit tien tot vijftien korte, middellange en lange teksten. Dit kunnen

allerlei soorten teksten zijn, zoals advertenties, krantenartikelen, brieven, enquêtes, folders,

ingezonden brieven, interviews en boekbesprekingen. Over deze teksten worden in totaal

ongeveer dertig vragen gesteld. Dit kunnen open- of meerkeuzevragen zijn. De meeste

vragen leveren één punt op, maar sommige open vragen leveren er twee op.

Tips

• Tijdgebruik

- Houd goed de tijd in de gaten. Wanneer je op de helft van je tijd zit, moet je ook

ongeveer de helft van de vragen beantwoord hebben. Oefen thuis met een

kookwekker.

- Probeer tijdens het oefenen te ontdekken waar jij het meeste moeite mee hebt. Is

dit schrijfvaardigheid of juist leesvaardigheid? Houd hiermee rekening bij de

tijdsindeling.

- Blijf niet te lang hangen bij een vraag waar je niet uit komt. Vul iets in, zet er een

sterretje bij, ga door met de rest van het examen en kom er later op terug. De

opgaven hoeven niet op volgorde gemaakt te worden. Als je weet dat de kans

groot is dat je in tijdsnood gaat komen is het verstandig om eerst de teksten te

maken die je makkelijk afgaan.

- Als je twijfelt aan een antwoord, streep je dit antwoord pas door wanneer je een

ander antwoord weet. Bij open vragen waar je meerdere punten voor kunt krijgen

geldt: een gedeelte van het antwoord levert ook punten op, beter iets dan niets.

Blok 1 Hoe pak je een tekst aan?

Stap 1 Wat is de tekstsoort?

Het leesgedeelte bestaat uit tien tot vijftien korte, middellange en lange teksten. Dit kunnen

allerlei soorten teksten zijn, zoals advertenties, krantenartikelen, brieven, enquêtes, folders,

ingezonden brieven, interviews en boekbesprekingen. De allereerste stap is dat je herkent

wat voor soort tekst het is.

➔ Artikel uit krant of tijdschrift: een artikel heeft als doel om de lezer te informeren over

een bepaald onderwerp. Het zijn dus informatieve artikelen uit kranten en

tijdschriften.

➔ Recensies: de schrijver geeft commentaar op één of meerdere dingen, in de meeste

gevallen films of boeken. De toon van de tekst kan per recensie verschillen. Als

bijvoorbeeld drie boeken worden besproken kan er één heel positief zijn en twee

negatief.

➔ Nieuwsbericht: In een kort krantenbericht wordt er verteld over een belangrijke

gebeurtenis die heeft plaatsgevonden. Een overval, opening van een nieuwe winkel

of gewoon een heel raar nieuwtje!

➔ Advertentie: in dit type tekst probeert men iets aan te prijzen met als doel de lezer

een product of dienst te laten kopen. Het zijn korte teksten met een afbeelding en

een pakkende titel.

➔ Brief: een brief is altijd geadresseerd aan iemand. Op het examen gaat het vaak om

ingezonden brieven. Hierbij heeft iemand een brief geschreven naar bijvoorbeeld een

krant om te reageren op een eerder artikel of interview.

Stap 2 Wat is de hoofdgedachte? In andere woorden: Waar gaat de tekst ongeveer over?

Hoe vind je de hoofdgedachte? Let op de volgende elementen:

➔ De titel, inleiding, tussenkopjes, slot en illustratie. Hiermee kun je veel te weten komen

over de toon van de tekst. Is de titel bijvoorbeeld positief of negatief? Wat zie je

precies op het plaatje en wat zou het kunnen betekenen?

➔ Onderstreep de kernzinnen en bepaal kort voor jezelf wat het belangrijkste uit de tekst

is. Streep alle voorbeelden, opsommingen en citaten weg.

➔ Lees de conclusie ( het allerlaatste gedeelte). De belangrijkste informatie van een

tekst wordt vaak herhaald of samengevat in de conclusie.

Stap 3 Lees de vraag !

- Zorg ervoor dat je alle woorden uit de vraag snapt. Zoek de woorden uit de vraag (en

de antwoorden) dus op als je ze niet kent!

Vaak kun je verschil maken tussen positieve (+) en negatieve (-) antwoorden. Zet een

plusje of een minnetje voor het antwoord.

- Onderstreep de woorden uit de tekst waar de vraag over gaat. Als de vraag over een

hele alinea gaat zet dan een streepje voor de regels zodat je weet waar je naar het

antwoord moet zoeken.

- Ga terug naar de vraag en bekijk per antwoord of je die woorden of het idee/gevoel

dat in het antwoord verwoord wordt uit de tekst kunt halen. Is dit niet het geval,

streep het antwoord door.

- Vaak houd je hierna nog twee antwoorden over. Lees deze antwoorden nog een keer

goed door en onderstreep de belangrijkste woorden in de antwoorden. Komen deze

woorden letterlijk of in een iets andere bewoording terug in de tekst? Hoe meer

woorden je terug kunt vinden in de tekst, hoe beter.

- Het goede antwoord is altijd het antwoord dat het meeste overeenkomt met de grote

lijn van het verhaal.

- Als je naar de volgende vraag gaat, lees dan het hele stuk tekst tussen de vorige

vraag en de nieuwe vraag.

TIP: Voor het beantwoorden van de vragen is het niet belangrijk wat jij vindt. Alle antwoorden

staan in de tekst! Lees de tekst dan ook zorgvuldig en vul de tekst niet aan met je eigen

ideeën over een onderwerp.

Antwoorden op open vragen moeten dan ook altijd beginnen met ‘in de tekst staat…’en niet

‘ik denk’ of ‘ik vind’.

Hoe gebruik je je woordenboek?

Natuurlijk kun je niet alle woorden in een tekst begrijpen. Daarom kan het handig zijn om je

woordenboek te gebruiken.

Denk aan de volgende punten:

- Probeer de betekenis van het woord te eerst zelf te ontdekken. Herken je misschien

het woord? Waar lijkt het op? Weet je misschien een klein beetje de betekenis?

- Werkwoordsvormen moeten altijd terug naar het hele werkwoord, dat is namelijk

het enige wat je in je woordenboek zult vinden.

-

Bijvoorbeeld I bought a lot of stuff! Zoek dan op: buy

I am happy to be here Zoek dan op: be (in plaats van am)

- Je woordenboek labellen met stickers is ook altijd handig. Dit doe je door post-its

bij elke letter te plakken. Zo kun je direct bij de juiste letter komen zonder er naar

te hoeven zoeken.

Blok 3 Vraagsoorten

Open vragen

Open vragen worden in het Nederlands gesteld en moeten ook in het Nederlands

beantwoord worden. Er zijn verschillende soorten open vragen die gesteld worden.

1. Waarom….?

Dit vraagt naar een oorzaak. Hierbij ga je op zoek naar signaalwoorden in de

tekst die een oorzaak aangeven (because, as, therefore, etc.)

2. Komen de volgende elementen wel of niet voor in de tekst?

Hierbij moet je de genoemde elementen goed doorlezen! Vaak zit het goede

antwoord in een detail (bv. er staat niet terwijl het wel moet zijn). Ook worden

dingen soms geïmpliceerd in de tekst maar niet uitdrukkelijk gezegd. In dat geval

komt het element dus niet voor in de tekst.

3. Zijn de volgende beweringen wel/niet waar of positief/negatief?

Ook hiervoor geldt dat het goede antwoord vaak in een detail zit. Onderstreep in

de tekst waar je het antwoord gevonden denkt te hebben en lees dit zorgvuldig

door. Als je hierin een woord niet begrijpt, zoek het op! Dit kan het verschil

maken tussen of iets wel of niet waar is.

4. Citeer vragen

Citeren betekent dat je een zin (of zinsgedeelte) overneemt uit een tekst.

Wanneer citeren van je gevraagd wordt, mag je heel de zin overnemen maar als

het een lange zin is kies je het eerste woord en het laatste woord van de zin en

zet je drie puntjes tussen haakjes tussen die twee woorden:

Bijvoorbeeld :“For(…) yesterday.”

Tips:

• Schrijf je antwoord beknopt op !

• Geef je antwoord in het Nederlands, tenzij er uitdrukkelijk om een citaat gevraagd wordt.

• Lees de vraag goed! Wat voor antwoord wordt er verwacht? Dit kan een woord, een

beknopt antwoord of juist een hele zin zijn.

Meerkeuzevragen

De meeste vragen in het examen zijn meerkeuzevragen. Hierbij staan zowel de vraag als het

antwoorden in het Engels genoteerd.

Hierbij volg je de stappen die eerder in het programma besproken zijn. In het kort nog een

keer:

1. Bepaal de grote lijn van de tekst d.m.v. de titel, het plaatje en de introductie.

2. Lees de vraag, zoek woorden die je niet kent uit zowel de vraag als de antwoorden

op.

3. Maak onderscheid tussen positieve (+) en negatieve (-) antwoorden.

4. Onderstreep het stuk tekst waar het antwoord in moet staan.

5. Is dit stuk tekst positief of negatief? Streep de antwoorden die hier niet mee overeen

komen weg.

6. Kies tussen de twee overgebleven antwoorden. Ga na hoe vaak de woorden uit het

antwoord voorkomen in de tekst, of alle elementen uit het antwoord kloppen en of de

antwoorden passen in de grote lijn van de tekst.

Bij twijfel, kies altijd het meest algemene antwoord.

Flyaway Parrot

1 A 12-year-old pet parrot has been reunited with his astonished owner Jerry Williams after an absence of more than two months. Jack, a blue-fronted Amazon1), vanished from his owner’s home in Liverpool in November. The bird was in the habit of following Jerry around the house. One Sunday morning Jerry stepped out of the back door, completely forgetting that Jack was sitting on his shoulder and suddenly the bird flew off.

2 After making it through the coldest December for a century, Jack was found towards the end of January, sitting on a fence outside a tropical birdhouse at Chester Zoo, some 15 miles from his home. Andy Woolham, the zoo’s head parrot keeper, said: “I could tell he was very hungry so I made him come down using a grape. No parrot can resist a black grape.” Andy decided to take the parrot home to look after him while they searched for his owner.

3 One of the most amazing things Andy noticed was that Jack was mimicking the clucking of hens all the time. During his time on the loose Jack had clearly spent some time with chickens in a heated hen house. Parrots mimic the sounds they hear in their surroundings.

4 Two weeks later a friend who visited Andy’s house, recognised Jack from a ‘missing parrot’ poster she had seen at a local vet’s surgery. Jerry said he was speechless when the zoo called to say Jack had been found. “Ever since the day I watched helplessly as he flew off over the trees at the end of the garden, I thought I’d never see him again,” he said. “We are having a lot of what I like to call QPT - Quality Parrot Time. It’s wonderful to have him back.”

I Lost Everything in a Fire Jasmine Barlow, 17, from Dorset: “What do you do when you can’t find your favourite jeans? Turn your room upside down, or run to the nearest jeans store for a new one? Well, how would you feel if you didn’t just lose a pair of jeans but all your belongings? Every photo, letter and memory, turned to ash. That’s what happened to me the night I lost everything in a fire.”

1 “It happened on Saturday, 2 January, when I had just gone to bed. Around 11pm, Mum’s voice pierced my sleep. “Wake up! There’s a fire!” she screamed. Confused, I stumbled out of bed and saw a cloud of smoke climbing the stairs. Within seconds thick smog filled the house. The smell was so strong that I was coughing and choking uncontrollably. Mum ran to a window, forced it open and jumped out. Luckily our next-door neighbour heard her and brought round a ladder to get me, my two sisters and my brother Jack out.

2 It turned out that an electrical fault had caused the fire. Jack had inhaled smoke and Mum had broken an ankle. While they recovered in hospital, I stayed with my grandparents. But it just wasn’t home. After three weeks Mum and Jack left the hospital. ‘Finally we can get our life back,’ I thought. But that’s when it hit me - we had nothing to get back to.

3 When we went to our old house for the first time it was like stepping onto the set of a disaster film. Black marks all over the walls. Everything was covered in black soot. All our photo albums were melted plastic. So I felt like my past didn’t exist anymore.

4 My mate Lucy turned up with a bag full of clothes and make-up. She’s my best friend but I still felt ashamed accepting her old stuff. I didn’t want hand-me-downs, I wanted mý stuff. Strangers arrived with old furniture and household items for us but I wanted to shout ‘We’re not a charity case!’

5 School was just as tough. I lost all the work for my school exams. With the deadline four weeks away, I had to stay in every night to catch up. It felt so unfair. I didn’t have a laptop any more so I was stuck in the school library rewriting all my notes while my friends went home.

6 Gradually I managed to buy some of the things I had lost. I bought a digital camera and took more than 200 pictures in one day, desperately trying to create new memories.

1 Harry Potter has millions of fans, but there

is at least one person who doesn’t like the famous wizard - the REAL Harry Potter, who lives in Portsmouth, England. The worldwide success of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter has brought nothing but misery for the 22-year-old bank employee, who has the same name and a scar on his forehead as well. No, life for the real Harry has not been magic at all!

2 “After peaceful years of being a schoolboy with an ordinary name my life changed completely when the books became popular,” says Harry. “At first I thought it might be quite a good thing to have the same name. But now it’s like someone has cast a bad spell on me. The reactions I get from people range from making fun to plain aggressive. I wish the writer J.K. Rowling had never used my name.”

3 J.K. Rowling has often said that Harry was her favourite boy’s name, so if her daughter had been a son he would have been called Harry Rowling. Potter was the surname of a family who used to live in the neighbourhood when she was young and she always liked the name, so she borrowed it for her book.

4 Harry says that his name is an obstacle in his professional life. “When I got my job in the bank where I work, they couldn’t believe that I was telling the truth on my application form,” he says. “I am the only person in the building who doesn’t have to use his full name when I’m talking on the phone. Beginning a phone conversation with the mention of my name is never a good start. It distracts people too much. No one ever believes that I’m telling the truth about my name.”

5 His name is also troublesome in his private life. “When I was dating my girlfriend Philippa, I had to show her my passport, my credit card and my driving license to convince her that I wasn’t lying,” he says. He even got into trouble when he was nearly sent off the football pitch for telling the referee his name. He had fouled someone and when the ref asked his name and Harry said: “Harry Potter”, the ref thought that he was being cheeky and was giving him a fake name. “I had to get my coach to come over and tell the angry ref that it really was my name.”

Foster Parents - 72 times over

1 The secret of staying young is: changing diapers! Just ask 81-year-old Ann Rose and her husband Tom, 73, who are about to become foster parents for the 72nd time. This amazing couple has cared for 71 children since they decided to become foster parents some 15 years ago. So they must have been changing some 6,000 diapers since then. “We don’t think we are too old to be doing this,” says Tom. “We love having the kids with us. They keep us young at heart.”

2 Tom and Ann have been married for 42 years. Their own two children have grown up and left home. Ann spent 35 years working as a drug and alcohol counselor. After she retired, she decided she wanted to help people in a completely different age group. “When they are little, before they might get bad,” Tom explains. “She thought that if we took in kids we could give them a good start, so we decided to give it a try.”

3 Their first foster child was only 3 years old and came with a heartbreaking story. “He was taken from his home after he drank from a bottle of chemical cleaner that burnt his throat. 1 Suffolk Police have been criticised for their plans to give stolen bikes to criminals for free. The idea is to help former offenders go out and look for work. Lost or stolen bikes that have not been claimed by their owners are normally sold by the police. And a bike that can be traced back to its owner will be returned. Police spokesperson Victoria Woods defends the plan by saying: “Finding employment can have a positive influence on people trying to make a new start. If people have no independent transport they cannot get a permanent job very easily.”

2 But critics say the idea is an insult to crime victims. Fiona McEvoy of the Taxpayers’ Alliance says: “This absurd plan just makes bike theft a legal thing. Suffolk Police could even be handing the bike to the very person who stole it, which would be like giving a reward to thieves.”

posted by David French I have worked on a few projects where the police donate stolen and abandoned bicycles that have been lying around police stations. The young lads learn how to repair them and it gives them a good feeling. If they complete the course they get to ride one of the bikes they repair at home.

Need to Park? Drivers desperate for a parking space can now find the answer to their prayers on the internet. A new website allows them to rent vacant garages and empty driveways from homeowners without cars at the click of a mouse. Letmepark.com is a website created by Jamie Waller, who recognised the awful need for parking for people who commute by car into a city. Mr Waller said his job as a bailiff1) had alerted him to the problem other people faced in trying to park legitimately, particularly in areas near shopping centres and stations. He said: “Lots of people who live in a city do not have a car and don’t use their parking space, so this is a great way for them to make money out of it. It is down to individuals how they use the service, but most people giving up their driveway are happier dealing with just one person rather than a different person every day.” People can advertise their driveway or garage on the site and are emailed when the space is selected by a possible user. They can contact each other and agree a price. There is no charge for the service, but Mr Waller hopes to make money by selling advertising on the site.

(1) An American woman suffering from depression has found help in the company of an unusual companion, but local city officials worry that the therapy pet a partially paralysed1) kangaroo could become a public safety risk. Christie Carr hopes city officials will allow her to keep Irwin, a 25-pound great red kangaroo that she cares for much like a child. Irwin rides in a car seat, is dressed in a shirt and pants each day and is rarely away from his doting caretaker. 1 IT SOUNDS like the plot of a far-fetched science fiction movie. Unfortunately for the residents of Texas, it is very much a reality: billions of tiny reddish-brown ants have arrived onshore from a cargo ship and are hell-bent on eating anything electronic. Computers, burglar alarm systems, gas and electricity meters, iPods, telephone exchanges – all are considered food by the flea-sized ants, for reasons that have left scientists baffled.

2 Having ruined pumps at a sewage facility, the ants are now marching towards NASA’s Johnson Space Centre and William P. Hobby airport, Houston, putting state officials in a panic. “They’re itty-bitty things, and they’re just running everywhere,” said Patsy Morphew, a resident of Pearland, on the Gulf Coast.

3 She spends hours sweeping them off her patio and scooping them out of her pool by the cupful. “There’s just thousands and thousands of them. If you’ve seen a car racing, that’s how they are. They’re going fast, fast, fast. They’re crazy.” Crazy is the right word. The ants are known as ‘crazy rasberry ants’: ‘crazy’ because they seem to move in a random scrum as opposed to marching in regimented lines, and ‘rasberry’ after a pioneering investigator, Tom Rasberry, who first identified them.

4 The ants have so far spread to five counties in the Houston area. Scientists are not sure from where they originate but they seem to be related to a type of ant from the Caribbean. “At this point it would be 21 to eradicate the ants because they are so widely dispersed,” said Roger Gold, a Texas A&M University entomologist. He added that the only upside to the invasion was that the crazy rasberry ants ate fire ants, which sting humans during the long, hot Texas summers.

5 But, unfortunately the ants also like to suck the moisture from plants, feed on precious insects such as ladybirds and eat the hatchlings of a small, endangered type of grouse known as the Attwater prairie chicken. They also bite humans – although not with a sting like fire ants.

6 Perhaps their most remarkable characteristic, however, is that they are attracted to electrical equipment. Pest control specialists say that they are inundated with calls from homes and businesses now that the warm, humid season has begun, with literally billions of the ants wreaking havoc across the state. Worse, the ants refuse to die when sprayed with over-the-counter poison. Even killing the queen of a colony doesn’t do any good, because each colony has multiple queens. The Texas Department of Agriculture says that it is working with researchers from A&M University and the Environmental Protection Agency to find new ways to 24 the ants.

The Art of Selling Sports to Teenagers When applied correctly, the motivation, discipline and structure in sporting activities are great for teenagers’ development Louise Tickle

(1) It can be difficult to convince unwilling teenagers that running around a muddy field with a hockey stick in the middle of winter is good for them. But at Wexham School, Slough, staff try to do just that. “We believe that sport, together with healthy eating, has a real impact on students’ lives and learning. It helps them concentrate on their lessons,” says Adam Dale, the school’s director of sport. (2) Wexham School takes a consultative approach to integrating sport into teaching. For instance, teenage girls and PE do not normally mix because young women can be self-conscious and are wary of body image. Here, though, girls are asked about what kind of activity they’d enjoy taking part in and what puts them off. In addition, when girls said they’d like to try aerobics, a specialist teacher was hired to run the sessions. Asking students what they’d like to wear during sport lessons and designing a more flattering and comfortable PE kit is another example of the school’s canny approach. Of course, the hope is that adopting an active lifestyle now will encourage sports participation into adulthood. (3) On average, Wexham runs five different after-school activities each day that pupils can participate in fully, or dip in and out of, as the mood takes them. Pre-school activities are

always followed with children sitting down and eating a proper breakfast together, as part of the focus on good nutrition. The canteen has recently been refurbished and now serves only healthy food. (4) Students who are less keen on sport are gently encouraged to try things out without any need to commit themselves to an activity long-term. “It’s about building up their self-esteem,” says Dale. “In general our sports curriculum uses a model where the students direct what goes on, design their own sports activities, referee matches and then assess how things went.” (5) Jeff Richardson, head teacher, says: “I think what happens sometimes is that schools try to use sport programmes to attack the symptoms of a problem rather than what causes it. If attendance and behaviour are poor and relationships between teachers and students are dysfunctional, introducing sport and PE isn’t going to solve anything. 1 ʺWhen I was 17, a routine visit to the doctor changed my life. My doctor informed me I had an incurable eye disease that would render me completely blind by the time I reached middle age. By four years ago, my sight had deteriorated so much that I decided to enter a school for the blind to learn how to live with my disability – how to cook, how to read Braille, how to make the most of my other senses.

2 During my stay I realised that many of the other students

kept themselves isolated, hesitating even to leave the safety of the dorms. That really scared me. I desperately wanted to keep in contact with the world. But I was shocked at how few options I had. I didn't want to struggle with a white cane, and I couldn't bear the idea of having a guide dog because of the grief I had experienced when my beloved pet dog died 10 years before. I knew I'd feel the loss of an animal I had relied on even more.

3 Then I heard about an experimental new program conducted by Janet and Don

Burleson. The Burlesons were training miniature horses as guides and hoping to match one of them with a blind person. When I learned that these horses live much longer than dogs (30 to 40 years), I was intrigued. The Burlesons scheduled me to work with a young mare named Cuddles. I was about to become the world's first user of a guide horse.

4 I knew that there would be sceptics people who didn't believe horses had the

right temperament to be service animals. After all, in the 1920s, when Dorothy Eustis began training German Shepherds to lead the blind, many people 32 the idea. But I knew that getting my life back would outweigh any criticism.

PETER ANDRE Unconditional Pour Femme 30 ml, £ 20 Team Andre must be mad if they were hoping for a knockout hit with this. Our testers found the pungent musk oil quality of Pete’s perfume overpowering, with some mistaking it for aftershave. Verdict: More macho than feminine

KATE MOSS Wild Meadow 30 ml, £14,95 When it comes to style, Kate always comes up smelling of roses and Wild Meadow was a hit with our testers, who loved its fresh and light floral bouquet. Presented in pretty, understated packaging, it’s the perfect springtime spray. It’s stylish and simple, with a price tag that won’t break the bank. Verdict: Spray it with flowers.

CLIFF RICHARD Miss You Nights 50 ml, £ 25 (only available online at The Perfume Shop) Oh dear. Cliff may have had a hit with the record, but Miss You Nights is a stinker of a perfume. I Puked On Stage! For my friend’s 16th birthday, she wanted to have a party that would rival everyone else’s by having the best music, most amazing foods and coolest giveaways, but her parents didn’t have the cash to pay for all these luxuries. So bye-bye went the cool giveaways and the hot band. She then decided to have her party at the most elegant fish restaurant in town, which happened to be a Japanese sushi place. I love my friend, but just the thought of eating raw fish makes me sick. I politely ate a few bites, disguising the taste and texture with chunks of spicy wasabi. When my stomach couldn’t take anymore, I decided to get the party started by being the first karaoke performer of the night. I sort of sang Justin Timberlake’s My Love, but midway through the song, the sushi came back to haunt me. I had the sweats and felt really dizzy. I decided I’d better cut the song short without making it obvious. But despite my hopes to slip away sneakily, I actually had a big finish!
