(U.S. News

and World Report )周刊公布最

(Early

Decision)。

(Vanderbilt

University)

(Early

(Early Decision

II)。

(University of Tulsa)。 (University of

Michigan)

(Cal

Page 9: TTLearning September 2010 Magazine

9

■ by Eddie LaMeire ThinkTank Learning Senior Consultant

(University of

Pennsylvania)

(Emory

We’re moving into the college application season rather quickly, and by now seniors should have

begun the process of determining their college lists. As we reviewed last month, though, there is an approach to applying to schools that will enhance students’ odds of acceptance to a rather high degree: picking the decision plan under which they apply. We discussed two plans last month: Regular Decision (RD) and Early Decision (ED). RD, as you might recall, is a standard application plan: there is a set deadline, students must apply by this deadline, and there is nothing binding regarding the plan. ED, conversely, is available at only select schools, the acceptance rates are typically far higher than the RD acceptance rates, and students are locked into attending the school if they’re admitted. The example

Application Strategies – Part IIwe discussed for ED was Vanderbilt University, who admits about 18 percent of applicants for RD, but about 42 percent for ED. It is worth mentioning, of course, that all schools offer an RD plan. In this article, we will discuss the remaining application plans: Rolling Admissions (RA), Early Action (EA), and Early Decision II (EDII). Not all schools offer these plans, but a student can take significant advantage of those that do.Rolling Admissions RA is not the most common plan, and it certainly will not be too common among students from the Bay Area. However, it is worth reviewing for no other reason than to provide a basic understanding of the concept. RA can essentially be summed up in this way: First come, first served. The plan allows students to apply at almost any time during the fall or early spring, as long

Page 10: TTLearning September 2010 Magazine

10

as seats are not filled up in the incoming class. Colleges that operate under this plan include the University of Missouri, Seton Hall University, and the University of Tulsa. The University of Michigan is on a hybrid RD/RA plan. The majority of the schools that offer RA do not find typically find themselves ranked within the top 50 schools in the country. Regardless, if a student is interested in applying to schools rather late in the game, RA can be a helpful option.Early Action Unlike RA, EA is a plan that many of the students in the area will take advantage of. However, there are several EA plans about which students should be aware. • Non-restrictive EA This plan is the most flexible of all the EA options, and it doesn’t provide an enormous statistical benefit in terms of admissions. However, if a student is interested in applying to a school that offers this plan, the student should apply under it, unless another school prohibits them from doing so. Non-restrictive EA, offered at Chicago, Cal Tech, and MIT, is a plan that allows students to apply early – typically in early November –and receive a decision by mid-December. Depending on whose numbers you look at, there is a slight advantage to applying under this plan, and if a student is admitted he is not locked into attending the school. Again, there are few true disadvantages to applying under non-restrictive EA. The timing can be an issue for some students, though, as they might not have earned their highest SAT score by the October test date (the latest test date that this plan will consider) or, if their spring junior year grades are less than stellar they won’t be able to show schools their fall grades. Aside from these factors, though, non-restrictive EA is thoroughly advantageous to the student. • Restrictive EA (REA) However, not every student will be allowed to apply non-restrictive EA, as schools in the REA category will prevent students from applying anywhere else early. Stanford, Yale, and Boston College all offer REA,

which again does not require the student to attend the school, but gives them a bit of a boost in terms of admissions. Yale, for instance, has an RD acceptance rate of approximately 6 percent. Their REA acceptance rate hovers around 14 percent. Stanford’s numbers are almost exactly the same as Yale’s. So, REA does give students an edge without locking them into the school. However, students will need to sacrifice applying to all other schools early (aside from those offering EDII) if they apply under REA. Choose wisely!Early Decision II EDII is a relatively recent phenomenon, and it’s one of the more difficult to understand, but let’s try to go through it. EDII is the same as ED, but the application date usually falls right around the RD deadline. To clarify, let’s review a scenario that would prompt a student to apply under EDII. Were a student to apply ED or EA to a school, they would typically do this at the beginning of November. The school would inform them if they were admitted or denied by December 15. If this student was denied ED from, say, the University of Pennsylvania, they would still have two weeks in order to apply under an EDII plan – for instance, at NYU, which began offering the plan this year – with the “bonus” that typically accompanies ED. As you might guess, schools that offer EDII are good schools, but they’re depending on the students rejected from top-tier ED schools to apply to them under EDII. There aren’t too many schools currently offering EDII, but the list is growing. As mentioned above, NYU offers the plan, as do Claremont McKenna, Emory University, and Vanderbilt University. The Final Word: Strategize! Although it might seem unfair, much of a student’s success or failure in the application process is determined by factors outside of grades and test scores. One of these factors is the decision plan under which the student applies. This must be thought out strategically and well beforehand. Begin thinking about this approach now in order to make sure that your odds of acceptance are increased as much as possible.

■ by Eddie LaMeireRecommend Me!

Although gathering letters of recommendation might not the most pressing need for rising

seniors, it is a factor that demands an address at this point in the summer. And, although letters of rec are not as important to the application as essays, a resume, and so forth, two to three letters are still a required part of most private school applications. Even further, they can provide support for the statements that the student mentions in her essays, as well as lend some coherence to the “theme” the student is trying to put forth through the application. The following, then, are some guidelines that the student can use when gathering these letters.Start Early! Teachers in the Bay Area have no shortage of students who are applying to private schools, and the majority of the better teachers are inundated with letter requests by late September. As soon as classes begin for the fall semester, then, students should – if they have not already done so – ask teachers for the letters. At some schools, teachers will have already maxed out on the number of students for whom they’re writing letters. In other schools, many teachers have a “recommendation lottery” system, where students are randomly chosen for letters to be written for them. In all cases, though, there are several further points that students should abide by when requesting letters. Some people advocate picking recommenders who teach classes that fit the student’s future interests. For example, a budding engineer would pick a mathematics and science teacher. Another piece of advice pushes students to pick at least one English teacher to write a letters, as this individual will tend to write better than a science instructor. A third approach combines the first two: pick one math/science and one humanities teacher, regardless of what the student’s major will be. Although the above approaches all make sense (and the last one is probably the most practical of the three), this is what I feel is the most sound advice:

Almost regardless of major, the student should pick the teachers who will simply write the best letters of recommendation. In other words, they should choose the teachers most likely to say, “This is one of the best students I have encountered in the last several years,” or something close to such a statement. The one time where students should depart from this advice would be when applying under technical majors to highly technical schools. For instance, Cal Tech will not care how glowingly an English teacher is to write about a student. In nearly all other cases, though, the best recommenders should be chosen to recommend.Build a Brag Sheet When assisting a student with the college application process, ThinkTank helps the students put together what we refer to as “brag sheets.” Many high schools will provide their own versions of this form, but, in the event that they don’t, we still advocate that the student build such a document. The brag sheet is a heavily annotated resume that highlights the student’s most impressive attributes, areas of involvement, activities, and skills. It guides the recommender toward a particular way of speaking about the student, which should fit in with the general theme that the student is trying to present to the college in her application. In other words, it is a roadmap – a very strong suggestion – to the recommender that very subtly seems to ask, “Can you please write about me in this way?” Remember, a l l schoo l s look a t l e t t e r s o f recommendation differently. Some will use them as a significant portion of the application review. Other colleges will simply file them away, never to read them. In all cases, though, they should be done well. Colleges want to know that they will be admitting students who can fit in well with the environment that their school presents. The more the student can have an educator attest to their personality, commitment, and drive, the better a student will appear in the eyes of the majority of college admissions officers.

Steven Lu / De Anza CollegeAccepted by : UC Berkeley / UCLA / UCSD / UC Davis / UC Irvine / UC Santa Cruz I immigrated to California from Taiwan in November, 2006. It was my second high school year in Taiwan which was equivalent to a high school junior here. I originally thought that the school system is the same as what I used to have in Taiwan; I believed that I could enter in a reputable university solely by my academic grade. After a consultation from ThinkTank, I realized that these famous universities focus not only on students’ GPA, but also our extracurricular activities.

Then ThinkTank suggested me to go to De Anza College directly after I graduated from High School, and then try to transfer. With more and more consultations and advices from ThinkTank, I kept a high GPA, did extracurricular activities, and joined many clubs at De Anza College. Also with the PCAP plan, ThinkTank told me that I needed to fully express my experience, feelings and dreams in my Personal Statement. As a result, I obtained the ticket to UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UC Davis and more other famous universities after studying two years in De Anza College. I really appreciate that ThinkTank provided me the right concepts and supports. I would tell you that ThinkTank is one of the best choices to help you go to the school you want. Success in the US not only comes from effort, but also you need opportunities, which ThinkTank will help you grasp.

Diana Chen / Mission San Jose High SchoolAccepted by : UCSD / UC Davis / UC Santa Barbara / UC Riverside / UC Merced Words cannot describe how grateful I am for TTL’s mentoring and assistance during this extremely stressful period of my high school career. As a matter of fact, they have given me so much guidance that they made the process durable. I definitely would not have been where I am today without the help of TTL. Unlike many other organizations, TTL is not there to rob people of their money. All of the TTL staff are so eager to help and they truly have the student’s best interest at heart. They are willing to go the extra mile even if it means only making a small difference. They see potential in each one of their students. They saw potential in me when no

one else did and were able to make something of it and thus here I am, a proud Class of 2014 of a university I have always wanted to attend. I strongly recommend TTL to any incoming seniors. This is the most important part of your life and you want to have the right captain. There are no better mentors than the ones at TTL. Thank you for TTL for everything!

Properly dealing with an inherited IRA can be tricky business. If you take the right steps, you

can continue to delay taxation on the account for many years. But if you make a mistake, the entire account balance could be taxable immediately — thereby wasting a potentially huge sum of money on taxes and killing off maybe 40 or 50 years of tax-deferred growth. If you inherit a retirement account, don’t do anything until you know exactly what rules apply. With your own IRA you can take the money out and redeposit it in another IRA within 60 days without penalty. Not so for an inherited IRA. All movement of money must be from one IRA custodian to another--be sure to specify a “trustee-to-trustee” transfer. Moreover, unless you’ve inherited from a spouse, you must retitle the IRA, including the original owner’s name and indicating it is inherited, e.g., “Daddy Pan, deceased, inherited IRA for the benefit of Daughter Annie, beneficiary.” If two or more people are named as beneficiaries, ask the custodian to split it into separate inherited IRAs. That avoids investment squabbles and allows a longer stretch-out for the younger heirs. A Stretch IRA is not a new product or a special type of IRA. Rather, it is a term that describes a retirement planning strategies focused on passing the remaining IRA assets to your loved ones. By making appropriate planning decisions, you can:- Minimize your current income taxes by simply taking the required minimum distributions (RMD) and no more.- Give your beneficiaries the ability to extent the tax deferral status of your IRA by “stretching” it out over your beneficiaries’ life expectancies. - Create a legacy by using your IRA to provide income to your surviving spouse, as well as future generations.

Passing on An IRA

Naming beneficiaries for your retirement accounts may seem like an easy task. Remember, though, it is also one of the most important decisions you will make. Therefore, you should give it the time and attention it deserves. Perhaps, the best way to navigate through the byzantine IRS tax laws that dictate the inheritance of Individual Retirement Account is to directly answer questions brought on by the real case scenarios from public. Q: My Dad left an IRA on which he named his two children as beneficiaries, each of us to get 50% of the account. I have given the bank a copy of the death certificate. I’ve consulted a lawyer, and he said that if my dad designated us as beneficiaries, and the bank has a death certificate, it can issue checks to the two of us and settle the account. My sibling is waiting on me for the go ahead to do this. But I guess I want to know what will happen before I do it. --KK A: That’s a very wise decision! Here’s what will happen: If you take your inherited IRA in the form of checks from the bank, you and your sibling will owe income taxes on this money. Since each of your shares will be added to your 2010 taxable income, you might even be bumped into a higher tax bracket. The lawyer you consulted may not know how IRAs are taxed. Unfortunately, the bank may not know either. Most banks know a lot more about how money goes into IRAs than about how it comes out. To divide this account without triggering taxes, you and your sibling should ask the bank to divide the IRA into two new IRAs … but not into new IRAs that list you as the owners! Your father’s name must remain on each of the new accounts as the deceased owner, with the name of each child on the account as

its beneficiary. For example, if your Dad’s name was Peter Pan, each of the two new IRAs should be titled “Peter Pan (deceased August 9, 2010), inherited IRA for the benefit of [insert name of one child].”Only a surviving spouse can transfer an inherited IRA into his or her own name. If any other beneficiary does that, the account stops being an IRA and is immediately taxable. If this is done right, each of you will have an inherited IRA that lists him or her as its sole beneficiary. At that point, if you wish, you can have your inherited IRA moved from your father’s bank into your own bank – or to any other financial firm -- in a trustee to trustee transfer. As beneficiaries you must start taking minimum annual distributions from the account by December 31 of the year following your father’s death; but the balance will continue to grow untaxed. As the sole beneficiary on the account, you can take minimum distributions based on your own life expectancy. This is one of the advantages of dividing the account correctly.

If you keep an inherited IRA with two beneficiaries listed on it, the required minimum distributions must be based on the life expectancy of the oldest beneficiary. Of course you can take more than the minimum distribution if you need it. But if you don’t, why pay taxes on this money sooner than you have to?A Few Last Words When you inherit an IRA, you absolutely must take the time to learn the applicable rules before you do anything. Don’t move the money at all until you understand what’s going on, because simple administrative mistakes can be very costly. By working with your qualified financial professional, you can help ensure not only that your assets go to the beneficiaries you want, but also that the assets may have the potential to grow tax-deferred for years to come.

YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE

UC Berkeley Steven Lu

UCLA、UCSD、UC Davis
