The sergeant’s wife is sev-en months pregnant,their eldest is seven. The

constable’s son is nine.The two police officers per-

ished in the most gruesomemanner in a fire during theearly hours of Sunday morn-ing.The police van they were

travelling in along Old FaureRoad near Mfuleni collided with a break-down truck. Then it caught alight. The offic-ers, Sgt Jeremy Hoop and Const MoniquePortland, as well as a suspect they had ar-rested earlier, were killed in the burningvan. Now only the bereaved families andtheir young children remain.

“We had a very, very happymarriage the past four yearsand I couldn’t have asked fora better husband.” This is themessage from Camilla Hoop,distraught and pregnant wid-ow of Sgt Jeremy Hoop.“The foundations he laid in

our marriage and his homeare his legacy – I will build onthat for our future,” she said.“He was a proud police offic-er.”The family of Const Port-

land are also holding on to their memoriesof her.

not seem to realise yet that his mother haddied, but the family was already in the proc-ess of getting him help to deal with the trau-ma. “He’s seeing the psychologist on Thurs-day,” she said.Marilyn, a metro police trainee, said her

sister’s pride in her workwas her own inspiration andmotivation. “Monique livedto be a police officer.”The two officers were on

patrol when the accidenthappened. Shortly after theunfortunate collision, medi-cal personnel were met withthe gruesome scene.“Paramedics from various

services were called to thescene to assist.Upon their ar-rival they found a horrific

scene in which the bakkie was engulfed inflames,” Werner Vermaak, a spokesman forER24, said. “It is understood that the vehiclecaught alight after the collision. Paramedicsfound three people that were still trapped inthe burning (police) vehicle.

Sadly they succumbed to their injuries onthe scene and (were) declared dead,” he said.

Four people, believed to be from the truck,sustained multiple injuries. “It is under-stood that one of the occupants was trappedin the vehicle and rescue equipment had tobe used to free him,” Vermaak said.

Medics on the scene stabilised the four be-fore rushing them to hospitals in the area.

Police are investigating a case of culpablehomicide and no arrests have been made.

“The circumstances surrounding the inci-dent are currently under investigation andno further details can be made available,”Col Tembinkosi Kinana, provincial policespokesman, said.

Capt Isaac van Niekerk, spokesman of theKuils River police, told TygerBurger the twopolice officers were outstanding in their du-ties. Sgt Hoop was also a decorated officerwho had received a number of accolades andawards, Van Niekerk said. Hoop was fromBishop Lavis.

view after he received an excellence award,how Sgt Hoop had said that he wanted toshow his friends and those from his almamater that someone fromanarea likeValhal-la Park could indeed achieve great heights,”Van Niekerk said.

“He was an excellent police officer.”Police management conveyed their deep-

est condolences to the families of all the de-ceased who lost their lives in the accident.

“Our hearts and thoughts are with all thebereaved families,” Kinana said.

A memorial service will be held for the of-ficers on Friday 30 August at the AFMchurch in Church Street, Soneike, Kuils Riv-er, at 12:00.

Matriculants were “spoilt rotten”. This isthe message from the Dawn Cares Commu-nity Centre in Sarepta, after hosting twoevents as part of their Women’s Month ini-tiative.

The two events took place over the past

weekend and was “wow”, and “indescriba-ble,” according to the project co-ordinator,Dawn Roode.

“The matrics had manicures, pedicures,hairdos and a dressing up. The snacks wereso heavenly and only the best were givento these girls,” she said.

She also noted that the donated gifts werebaskets filled with high quality products,and that the girlswere very impressedwiththe wares, which included toiletries andmakeup.

“This event was a huge success. Fourhigh schools were represented: SareptaHigh, Kuils River Technical High School,Silversands High and the head girl of Mait-land High attended. The centre also spon-sored a matric ball dress.

Then, on Sunday at the second event, atotal of 48 women attended, Dawn said.

“The women asked if we could have moreof these relaxing events. I really thank thecommunity for helping to make all thingspossible,” she said.

They shot and killed a Somali businessmanin Wesbank, but 20 minutes later policewere on their trail.

The five suspects attempted to rob a So-mali shop owner on Thursday evening at21:30 at the corner of Diepwater Street andWesbank Main Road, Mfuleni police said.

“At approximately 21:50 theFlyingSquadandMfuleni police followedup informationwhich led to the arrest of two suspects,”Capt Nomathemba Muavha of the Mfulenipolice said.

Muavha said Mfuleni detectives spentthe night leaving no stone unturned. In theend, they caught up with the other threesuspects – between 03:40 and 04:00 onFridaymorning.

“One of the suspects pointed out to the po-lice where the shotgun which they hadused, was hidden. The police found it in awardrobe in a bedroom in Melwood Streetin Wesbank,” she said.

The five suspects, youths agedbetween 17

and 21, appeared in court on Monday oncharges ofmurder, attempted business rob-bery and the possession of an unlicensedfirearm.

Five busted for trader’s death

The shotgun used in a robbery and murder inWesbank, that was found by Mfuleni police ina wardrobe in Wesbank.

Twodays earlier he and a friend tried to roba Mfuleni woman of her cellphone. Thewoman got stabbed in her ear, and they gotaway with only R95.50.

But nomatter howbig or small the crime,it never pays. This was proved when policesurprised the robber at his home two dayslater.

“The suspect was still relaxing at homewith a friend when the police arrested himat approximately 09:00,” said Capt Nomath-emba Muavha, spokeswoman for Mfulenipolice.

When police searched the house, they

found 24 stoppe of dagga in a shoe box. Thesuspect and the friend were arrested forpossession of dagga, Muavha said.

Police then went in search of the secondrobbery suspect who was arrested at hishouse shortly after.

The pair of robbers are 19 and 20 yearsold. One additional charge was broughtagainst the other suspect for possession ofdagga.

Die gemeenskap van Wesbank gaan hon-derde wit kruise plant. Dís nou as ’n plaas-like kerk hier alles gereël, agtermekaarkan kry, en die gemeenskap betrokke kankry.

Met dié kruise, wat diegene simboliseerwat aan geweld gesterf het, wil die AFMNew Hope Ministries en Wesbank Commu-nity Forum (Wescof) van Wesbank ’n po-ging aanwend om die gemeenskap, ook diebendes van hier, op ’n emosionele manierte tref.

Die doel agter dié inisiatief is om die ge-meenskap op grootskaal te kry om saam tewerk teen misdaad, moord en bendebedry-wighede.

“Ons Wesbank-gemeenskap het grootprobleme met die toename in bendebedry-wighede – dis ’n totale ramp. Mense voelal soos gevangenes in hul eie huise,” hetpast. Cornelius Pieters van dié kerk gesê.

“Verskillende pogings is al aangewenddeur die geestelike en gemeenskapsleiersen -organisasies hier om te kyk of daar nie’n afname in die moord en doodslag kankom nie, maar tevergeefs,” het hy gesê.

“Ons gaan nou wéér probeer om die lei-ers bymekaar te roep, verál die mans, wantons sit met sowat 5 200 huise in Wesbank,en uit elke huis behoort daar ’n man te

kom. Al sou ons ten minste net 500 manskon kry, kan ons ’n dinkskrum hou oor hoeom dié bende-duiwel uit te roei.”

Die kerk onderneem om voorts ook metdie bendes gesprekke te voer en te onder-handel oor ’n toekomstige veilige benade-ring vir alle inwoners.

“Ons gaan verskillende benaderings ge-bruik om met die bendeleiers te praat . . .om die erns van die saak uit te wys. Diekerk is ook die ‘slapende reus’ wat hierdieeuwel kan hokslaan,” het hy gesê.

Om hierdie redes beplan die kerk, metbehulp van die manskappe wat hulle wilbetrek, om op ’n oop stuk veld die kruisein te kap.

“Baie sentraal, gaan ons sowat 200 tot 300wit kruise inkap.

“Ons wil dit tussen tweeuur en drieuurdie oggend doen, sodat wanneer die ge-meenskap opstaan en hierdie gesig aan-skou, ons die meeste emosionele impakkan maak.”

Gerber, a flagship Food Lover’s Market, isone of 20 new shops that have concludedtrade agreements with the centre. Uniqueto Food Lover’s Markets, this flagship storewill be a modern eatery where foodies canindulge in a range of gourmet foods fromaround the world.This enormous store will take-up 3 500

squaremetres of floor space – the entire leftflank of the centre, where the old Wool-worths use to be situated.A modern, airy new entrance and wind

lobby will serve as doorway to the market.“Along with this Pick n Pay will soon

start its own renovations to have their newlook store ready for the opening of FoodLover’s in March 2014,”says Gerber.Other stores on board include Romans

Pizza, Sheet Street, a new and upgraded PepStores, Wimpy and African Bank.Progress at the construction site is well

under way.Gerber says that all the new shops have

been built and shop fronts are currently be-ing installed. The roofing is up and workcontinues on the new undercover frontwalkway and parking areas. The entire fa-cade of the centre is being renovated and isnearing completion.“New landscaping will be done and addi-

tional public toilets are to be constructed onthe ground floor,” she says.“Each shop will be installed with fire de-

tection equipment in line with safety regu-lations and the interior of the old mall iscurrently being transformed into a modernnew look, with new ceiling lights and tiles.The centre will also have threemodern newentrances”.Refurbishments to the store started in

February this year, after 36 years of exist-ence.The centre was purchased by Zenprop

Property Holdings four years ago.

The women of Mfuleni and the Wesbankcommunity are now armed with informa-tion on how to treat a crime scene.The training initiative, hosted by the

Mfuleni police cluster, aimed to inform thewomen on exactly what to do if a crime wascommitted, and how to protect and pre-serve evidence, as well as the crime scene,said Capt Nomathemba Muavha from theMfuleni police.“In the light of rape incidents, it has been

noted that not all people understand the im-portance and the procedure to be followedafter these crimes have been committed,”said Muavha.“This campaign, therefore, was part of

the SAPS’s contribution and demonstra-tion of a caring attitude towards the victimsof crime and particularly to the vulnerablewomen and children within our society,”she said.The session was attended by about 120

people at the Wesbank multi-purpose cen-tre, and formedpart of thepolice’sWomen’s

Month programme, led by Maj Gen SharonJephta, deputy provincial commissioner ofpolice.The women were taught, step by step,

how to handle a crime scene. Police did thisby teaching thewomen to remember the ab-breviation “DNA CSI”, said Muavha.In DNA, the “D” is for “don’t touch”, “N”

for “note, record and observe” and “A” for“assist police officers”. In CSI, the “C”stands for “comfort and support the vic-tim”, “S” is for “secure crime scene” and“I” for “insist no-one interferes”.“The group was very interactive as they

posed questions to the trainer and also an-swered some of the questions,” she said“All women in attendance were amazed

at howmuch evidence is available at a rapecrime scene. That evidence could be suc-cessfully used in linking a suspect to thecrime scene,” she said.According to Muavha, the community

thought the session was “informative andalso a resounding success”.

So teen 20:00 die aand het diestroom konstant ingekom totdaar omtrent 100 kinders was.

Ons was net drie grootmenseom toesig te hou, aangesien 30nog ’n beheerbare getal souwees. My man het by onskroeg gebly sodat die kindersnie iets daar neem nie.

My vriendin was by dievoordeur en dan by die kinderswat buitekant was.

Ek moes my slaapkamers entoiletarea gedurig dophou.

Met soveel kinders is dit neteenvoudig ’n onbegonne taakom enige beheer uit te oefen.

Die musiek was so oorverdo-wend dat die bure kom kla het.Ons moes die kinders heeltydgaan stil maak.

Ek het later hier en daargevra waar die kinders van-daan kom en daar was selfskinders van ’n skool in Kaap-stad, ook van Bellville enBrackenfell en selfs ’n tweede-jaar-student.

The mid-point assessment of the city’shome composting study reflects phenome-nal results showing 12,94 tons of organicwaste being diverted from landfill sites infour months.TheCity ofCapeTown’sHomeCompost-

ing Study, which began in March thisyear, has now passed its mid-point. So far,a total of 45 449 litres (12,94 tons) of organicgarden and kitchenwaste has been divert-ed from landfill sites.The impressive results of the study

were achieved by 172 regularly participat-ing households located across four sub-urbs. These are Edgemead, Heathfield,Scottsville and Bongweni.“The study came about as a result of the

overuse of the city’s landfill sites for gar-den and organic waste which can be com-posted and re-used. At present, 95 000 tonsof household garden and organic wasteand 80 000 tons of householdkitchenwasteis directed to the city’s landfill sites eachyear,” said the city’s Ernest Sonnenberg.“On average, a household generates ap-

proximately 11 kg of garden and organicwaste and 10 kg of organic kitchen wasteper month.“Weare urging residents to get involved

in efforts to reduce waste generation andtry home composting. Every small effortwill help us to reduce damage to our envi-ronment,” said Sonnenberg.

Dié drie is Jana-Mari Carstens, Lize Cilliéen Nadine Herbert – die top-derdejaarstu-dente vir 2012 in toegepaste wiskunde.

Volgens prof. André Weideman, organi-seerder van die toekennings, geborg deurdieCambridgeUniversityPress,wasdaar sóweinig verskil tussen dié drie se punte datdie beoordelaars besluit het om aan al drieerkenning te gee.

Nadine is ’n oudleerder van die HoërskoolDe Kuilen in Kuilsrivier en is tans besigmet’n honneursgraad in toegepaste wiskunde.

Jana-Mari is ’n oudleerder van die Hoër-skool Outeniqua in George, en sy doen van-jaar haar nagraadse onderwyssertifikaat.

In die tussentyd proef sy ookbydie Sekon-dêre Skool Stellenzicht op Jamestown, waarsy haar passie virwiskunde enkinders kom-bineer.

Lize,’n oudleerder van die Hoër Meisie-skool Bloemhof op Stellenbosch, is tans be-sig met ‘n honneursgraad in toegepaste wis-kunde.

Diewenners van boekpryse vir húl presta-sies, as onderskeidelik beste eerste- en twee-dejaarstudente is Philipp Uhrich en MarcoGrond.

“Dit is duidelik dat die keuse van boekewat as pryse toegeken is – soosMaths Galo-re! enHow to fold it – interdissiplinêre denkeaanmoedig,” het prof. Ingrid Rewitzky, hoofvan die departement wiskundige weten-skappe, gesê.

Hulle het meer as 130 ander skole uitgestofom met ’n gewilde skoleprys weg te stap.Dié “hulle” is die Hoërskool Good Hope inKuilsrivier, en die prys was vir die CapeArgus Schools Quiz.

“Ons het gisteraand (verlede Maandag)met die louere weggestap en sodoende met133 hoërskole afgereken, wat ook meege-ding het om dié gesogte prys,” het RolandLinks, hoof van die skool, gesê.

Dit is die eerste keer dat ’n skool in die

noordelike voorstede wen, het hy gesê. Dievorige wenners van die afgelope vyf jaarwas almal van skole in die suidelike voor-stede, het hy gesê.

Verlede jaar se wenner was BelgraviaHigh van Athlone. Good Hope het R35 000-prysgeld vir die skool en R3 000 vir die vierdeelnemers en reserwe gewen.

“Dit is weliswaar ’n welkome inspuitingvir dié skool, wat juis die naam, ‘GoeieHoop’, gestand doen.

“Ons wil die borge hartlik bedank virhierdie kompetisie,” het Links gesê.

Dié skool het leerders vangr. 7 tot 12. Eenvan die verpligte klasse is Bybelstudies, al-dus sy webtuiste.

sometime, dear,” says artist Nicky Walker,who specialises in oil canvasses of women’sfeet.Nicky, who calls Parow home, occupies

himself with a rather distinct artistry: thepainting of female feet with oils on canvas.The graphic-designer-turned-fine-artist

plans to start a low-cost beauty/art boutiquein Parow where women can unwind, havetheir feet pedicured, photographed, paintedand pampered to their hearts’ content.Asked what his fascination is with feet

and he’ll tell you that a woman’s feet are themost beautiful feature and should be treatedwith utmost care. “Unfortunately this doesnot prove true for most women,” he sighs.“There are two types of people: those who

pedicure and those who don’t. Cape Town rock ’n roll band Taxi Vio-lence, have recently launched theirfourth album, Soul Shake.

The band visited TygerBurger’s OrangeCouch to talk about the albumandwho theyare.“Taxi Violence is a band that have been

around for nine years now,” says guitarist,Rian Zietsman.“We’ve comea longwayandgone through

a lot of ups and downs,” he says.“At the moment we’re on an up,” Rian

adds, referring to their new album.“Essentially we’re a rock band,” vocalist

George van der Spuy, jokes.“Wealways struggle to find aname for the

album, one that means something,” drum-mer, Louis Nel, says. “The funny thing iswe always seem to just choose one of thesongs that will be on the album, we choosethat as the album title,” he adds.

MeaningGeorge says the song picked has to em-

body the album,while Louis adds that it hasto sound cool and marketable as an albumtitle as well. “And then we kind of make upthe meanings afterwards,” Louis says.“The initial idea behind the albumwas to

do a party rock album, like, go back to ourrock roots,” saysGeorge, adding: “So I thinkthat’s exactly what we did.”“But it’s still got those emotional mo-

ments, but it’s essentially also just good oldfashioned rock ’n roll, the Taxi Violencesound,” George says.The band’s previous album, Long way

from Home, was an unplugged album, andthe band has said that they wanted to goback to “rocking out” on that album.“Even though that was a lot of fun, and

we learnt a lot, we can’t deny who we are,”Rian says.

“Being energetic on stage and in the stu-dio has always been part of our makeup, sowe kind of returned to that by design,” Riansays.”By ‘party rock’, we don’t mean Good

Charlotte, just upbeat music you can danceto,” Rian explains, while George throws outthe example of ACDC.Rian says they probably would have end-

ed up doing that anyway, they just verbal-ised it, before it came to be.

Jamming“Our songwriting process is very simple

actually,” George says. “Usually somebodycomes to the rehearsal with an idea, a basicriff,” he explains.“On this album, Jason wrote a lot of it,”

he says, referring to bassist, Jason Ling.“Then we basically jam it out, in the re-

hearsal studio, until we get some kind ofstructure,” he says.George puts melodies over that, which

are often just mumbled, nonsensical words,until they eventually find lyrics for a song.“Sometimes even we’re performing live,

he will mumble,” Rian points out jokingly.When they aren’t busy with Taxi Vio-

lence, the band members are involved inother musical projects. Louis and Rian arepart of Beast, while George also sings forGoodnight Wembley, who opened for inter-national act, Billy Talent, last week.I think Beast and Goodnight Wembley

have both become bands that are just asbusy, it’s not really a side thing,” Georgesays.“It’s two very different styles and you can

Ondanks die naelbyt-telling van 36-33 hetdie Kuile gewis die oorwinning verdien na-dat hulle ses keer agter UWK se doellyn gaandraai het. Die studentespan kon self net driekeer die tuisspan se doellyn oorsteek.

In die A-afdeling het Durbanville/Bellvil-le met sy oorwinning van 24-7 oor Helder-berg binne trefafstand gebly van Hamiltonsom te kwalifiseer vir deelname aan die Ge-meenskapstrofee-kompetisie.

Die Durbies, wat vanaand (Woensdag) tuisspeel teen die Maties en Saterdag weg teendie Ikeys, sal waarskynlik bonuspunt-seges

in albei hierdie kragmetings moet behaalom Hammies op die finale punteleer verbyte steek.

Die Tygerberg-klub het verlede Woensdag’n goeie oorwinning van 23-21 oor die Victo-riane behaal, maar Saterdag ’n opstoppervan 53-24 van Hamiltons ontvang. Bellvillehet 3-64 vasgeval teen die Maties en Belharhet met 16-28 verloor teen die Ikeys. Tien mi-nute voor die einde het dié twee spanne nogmet 16-16 gelyk getrek, maar twee verderedrieë het sake in UK se guns beklink.

Town and ASD Academy on Sunday.The final was the culmination of months

of qualifying matches and over 40 matchesat the weekend, and pitted together two of

the title favourites.People’s Post is the tournament’s print me-

dia sponsor.The Urban Warriors breezed through the

group stages, quarter-finals and semis witha perfect record as expected, scoring 13 goalsand conceding just one.

ASD had a less a comfortable route to thefinal, drawing against United FC in the

group stage and scraping past Bishop Lavison penalties in the semis.

AttackBuoyed by their success in the earlier

rounds, Ajax needed no time to settle in thefinal and were in all-out attacking mode assoon as the first whistle sounded.

The defending champions won the mid-field battle and imposed their style of playon the game to take full control and keepASD pinned in their own half.

Ajax regularly got in behind the opposi-tion defence, but couldn’t come up with anaccurate final ball to take the lead.

The second half started as the first had,with Ajax pushing for a breakthrough andASD hesitant to commit numbers to attack.
