A very good morning to our dear principal, Tn Haji Ali bin Abu, teachers dan students.
We are living in an era of internet explosions, where the informations and communication
technology (ICT) are just at our finger tips. Internet has become very useful and instrumental in
performing daily tasks, especially for those who want to complete their important works in a fast, easy
and cost effective manner. Internet has also enabled the education field to grow in line with theadvances in such technology and in the process, had helped education in Malaysia to stay at par with
those in the developed countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. The question is, what
are the importance of the internet-based education, particularly in Malaysia?
In the past, the textbook is considered as an important source of learning in the classroom. However,
todays students regard the textbook as a mere burden on their shoulders and carrying a school bag full
of textbooks has become unpopular. This had resulted in an increasing number of students willing to
leave their textbooks at home thus causing them to have troubles with school rules. While some student
may still prefer the conventional way of reading book, many are spending more time on their computer
screen, reading e-books and some e-book could even be downloaded for free. All of all, getting an e-
books is cost and time effective as compared to getting a book from the bookstore.
The use of the internet had also enables informations sharing between students. Education Network
Project (JP) under the Ministry of Education and MIMOS is one of the many activities in the computer
program by the Ministry of Education. It is strongly argued that the said project has its fair contribution
to the improvement in the quality of education in Malaysia. In addition, the use of applications such as
e-mail allows all informations to be shared by the students and teachers and any instructions, informations and all other related matters could be be delivered more quickly and easily. According to a
Researcher, Dr.Jane Lasarenko, the use of e-mail had improved the way students handled their studies
and researches and, the students tend not to make lame excuse for not sending their assignments on
time, as may be the case if they have had to deliver the hard copy thereof.
The best part is: Internet has various teaching components, such as graphics, animation or audio
components as well as visual. Teaching and learning has been more fun then and has been able to
attract more interest in learning such skills and knowledge. Of course, teachers are able to access
various forms of training exercises and sample examination questions for their students, especially for
those who will be sitting for public examinations and thus, while such exercises and questions were
important, it has been rightly be exposed to them through the use of internet.
In conclusion, the introduction and subsequent use of internet and comunications technology (ICT) in
education is in line with Vision 2020 as was promulgated by Tun Mahathir Mohamad, the then Prime

Minister of Malaysia so that we could become a developed nation by and with skills and knowledge of
our own people. Thus, we must be able to produce and continue to develop skillful and knowledgeable
students and post graduates as enunciated in the National Education Philosophy so as to create a
productive and innovative workforce to enhance production for further develpment of our nation.
