    This will be our reply to violence:to make music more intensely,more beautifully,more devotedly than ever before.

    Leonard Bernstein

    Tonight’s performance is dedicated to the victims and survivors of the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris—and to all victims of terror and violence.

    Behold how good, and how pleasant it is,For people to dwell together in unity. Psalm 133

    Psalm Tunes for Archbishop Parker’s Psalter (1567) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Thomas Tallis (1505–1585)

    First Tune: Man blest no doubt (Psalm 1)Man blest no doubt, who walketh not out, in

    wicked men’s affairs;And standeth no day, in sinner’s way,nor sitteth in scorners’ chairs;

    But hath his will in God’s law still, this law to love aright;

    And will him use on it to muse,to keep it day and night.

    Second Tune: Let God arise in majesty (Psalm 68)Let God arise, in majesty,and scattered be his foes;Yea f lee they all, his sight in face,to him which hateful goes;

    As smoke is driven and comes to nought, re-pulse their tyranny;

    At face of fire, as wax doth melt,God’s face the bad must f ly.

    Third Tune: Why fumeth in fight (Psalm 2)Why fumeth in sight, the Gentiles spite, in fury

    raging stout?Why taketh in hand, the people fond, vain

    things to bring about?

    The Kings arise, the Lords devise, in counsels met thereto;

    Against the Lord, with false accord, against his Christ they go.

    You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

    Venite exsultemus Domino (1961) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Benjamin BrittenPsalm 95 (1913–1976)

    O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation.Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and shew ourselves glad in him with psalms.For the Lord is a great God: and a King above all Gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth: and the strength of the hills is his also.The sea is his and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land.O come, let us worship and fall down and kneel before the Lord our maker.For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand.Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts; as in the provocation, and as in the day of

    temptation in the wilderness.When your fathers tempted me: proved me, and saw my works.Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said: It is the people that do err in their

    hearts, for they have not known my ways. Unto whom I share in my wrath: that they should not enter into my rest.Glory be to the Father and to the SOn: and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is now, and

    ever shall be.Amen.

    Sende dein Licht und deine Wahrheit, daß sie mich leiten und bringen zu deinem heiligen Berg und zu deiner Wohnung,

    daß ich hineingehe zum Altar Gottes, zu dem Gott, der meine Freude und Wonne ist, und dir, Gott, auf der Harfe danke, mein Gott.

    Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.

    For Thou art the God of my strength; why dost Thou cast me off? Why go I mourning be-cause of the oppression of the enemy?

    O send out Thy light and Thy truth! Let them lead me. Let them bring me unto Thy holy hill and to Thy tabernacles.

    Then will I go unto the altar of God, unto God my exceeding joy; yea, upon the harp will I praise Thee, O God, my God.

    Да исправиться молитва моя, яко кадило пред Тобою:

    воздеяние руку моею, жертва вечерняя.

    Господи, воззвах к Тебе, услыши мя:вонми гласу моления моего, внегда

    воззвати ми к Тебе.

    Положи, Господи, хранение устом моим, и дверь ограждения о устнах моих.

    Не уклони сердце мое в словеса лукавствия,непщевати вины о гресех.

    Let my prayer arise in thy sight as incense; and let the lifting up of my hands be an eve-

    ning sacrifice.

    Lord, I call upon thee, hear me; receive the voice of my prayer, when I call upon

    thee.

    Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth, and keep watch over the door of my lips.

    Incline not my heart to evil words, nor to make excuses for sins.

    Conductor & composer DOMINICK DiORIOwas recently named the 2014 winner of The American Prize in Composition (professional choral division) with the judges saying “his depth of vision, mastery of compositional technique, and unique style set him in a category by himself.”

    DiOrio is assistant professor of choral conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he directs NOTUS: IU Contemporary Vocal Ensemble, an auditioned chorus specializing in music of the last fifty years. Under his leadership, NOTUS has performed at both regional and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and as an invited ensemble on the Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) Artist Series at Carnegie Hall. He mentors graduate choral conducting majors and also teaches courses in score reading, choral literature, and undergraduate and graduate conducting. He was named a recipient of the 2014–2015 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award—IU Bloomington’s highest honor for tenure-track faculty.

    Called “a forward-thinking young composer filled with new ideas, ready to tackle anything,” DiOrio was named Best Composer 2011 by HoustonPress for Klytemnestra, his chamber opera with Divergence Vocal Theater and librettist Misha Penton. His second opera, The Little Blue One with librettist Meghan Guidry, had its premiere in April 2014 in Boston with Juventas New Music Ensemble and musical director Lidiya Yankovskaya. Of the opera, the Boston Examiner wrote, “The Little Blue One defies the widespread notion that contemporary classical music is inaccessible; DiOrio’s score abounds with gorgeous lyricism, supported by compelling harmony.” He has been awarded prizes in composition from ASCAP and ACDA, among many others. His work is published with Alliance, Boosey & Hawkes, Carl Fischer, Éditions à Couer-Joie, Edition Peters, G. Schirmer, Lorenz, Mark Foster, Oxford, and Santa Barbara.

    DiOrio earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting from the Yale School of Music, studying with Marguerite Brooks, Simon Carrington, and Jeffrey Douma. His DMA research on Krzysztof Penderecki’s St. Luke Passion is published in The Choral Scholar. He also earned the MMA and MM in conducting from Yale and the BM in composition summa cum laude from Ithaca College, where he studied with Gregory Woodward, Dana Wilson, and Janet Galván. He currently serves as treasurer on the Executive Board for the National Collegiate Choral Organization (NCCO), as a member of the Board of Directors for Chorus America, and on advisory boards for the Choral Arts Initiative, the Princeton Pro Musica, and the Young New Yorker’s Chorus (YNYC).

    The choirs of the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa are a large and growing ‘ohana of students, alumni, and community members who love to sing. There are four choirs in the program:

    University Chorus—UChorus, led by Dr. Alec Schumacker, is a choir of singers from all corners of the University and surrounding community. The group rehearses on Tuesday evenings and is open to all regardless of choral experience.

    Hawaiian Chorus—Led by Hawaiian choral expert and UH music lecturer Nola A. Nāhulu, this chamber ensemble is devoted to the unique Hawaiian choral tradition and performs frequently around the community.

    Concert Choir—This student choir, led by Dr. Miguel Ángel Felipe, rehearses three times weekly and performs choral repertoire from across the spectrum. The majority of students who sing in choruses in the uhm Music Department are members of this ensemble.

    Chamber Singers—This ensemble is the University’s most select vocal ensemble and frequently represents the University outside of our Mānoa campus. The Chamber Singers sing repertoire from a wide variety of genres and, in 2016, will tour Montréal, Canada, New England, and New York. Like Concert Choir, Chamber Singers is led by Dr. Felipe.

    Our choral program is a part of the robust Music Department of the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. The department is home to dozens of ensembles, hundreds of students, over twenty full-time faculty, and near fifty additional instructors and specialists. As the only nationally-accredited music school in Hawai‘i, students in the voice area enjoy a variety of standard and specialized courses in vocal literature, pedagogy, and performance. In addition, diverse offerings provide our students with world-class experiences beyond the Western tradition, unique to our Pacific Rim location.

    For more information about the choral ‘ohana and broader Music Department at UHM, contact our director of choral activities, Dr. Miguel Ángel Felipe, [email protected].
