The Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the

Temple

The Icon of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple demonstrates one of the twelve major feasts of

Orthodoxy after Easter - the feast of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple.

The feast is dedicated to an event recounted in the apocryphal Infancy Narrative of James and Gospel of Pseudo-

Matthew. According to the texts, parents of the Virgin Mary, the righteous Joachim and Anna, who were childless,

were praying for a baby. They vowed, if a child was born, to devote his or her life to God. "As the Lord my God liveth,

if I bring forth either male or female, I will bring it for a gift unto the Lord my God, and it shall be ministering unto

him all the days of its life." (Protevangelium of St. James 4:3)

When the Blessed Virgin was three years old, the holy parents decided to fulfill their promise. "And the child became

three years old, and Joachim said: Call for the daughters of the Hebrews that are undefiled, and let them take every

one a lamp, and let them be burning, that the child turn not backward and her heart be taken captive away from the

temple of the Lord." (Protevangelium of St.James 7: 5).

All family and friends gathered together, the Most Pure Mary wearing the best clothes, they were singing sacred

songs and with lighted candles in their hands brought her to the Temple. The pontiff met her with a lot of priests.

There were stairs in the temple of fifteen high steps. Infant Mary, as soon as she was put on the first step,

strengthened by the power of God, quickly overcame the remaining steps and ascended to the top. "... When She was

placed in front of the temple of the Lord, she ran up fifteen steps, not looking back and not calling her parents, as

children usually do. And everybody wondered seeing that, and the priests of the temple were in a daze "(The Gospel

of Pseudo-Matthew. 4)

Then the high priest Zechariah, inspired from above, led the Most Holy Virgin into the Holy of Holies, where only

once a year the high priest entered with purificatory sacrificial blood. All present in the temple marveled at the

unusual event. Righteous Joachim and Anna handed the Child to the will of the Heavenly Father and returned

home.

Mary was brought in the church until the adult age, the age of 15. Then priest Zechariah arranged presentation of

marriageable men as he was told by an Angel. There was chosen Mary’s husband with the help of a stave, which

wonderfully blossomed out and showed to an elderly widower carpenter Joseph.

Deep mystery covers the earthly life of the Virgin from infancy to the ascension into heaven. Her life in the temple of

Jerusalem was also concealed. There is well known story of Gregory of Nicomedia about a visit of an Angel to Mary

in the Church: "She was in communication with the Angels. Zachariah knew about that, for he, as a priest, was in an

altar-space, and saw that someone extraordinary was talking to the Virgin and gave her some food. It was an angel

and Zechariah was surprised, thinking to himself what was that new and unusual phenomenon? "Dmitri of Rostov"

According to Church traditions it is known that during the years the Blessed Virgin spent at the Temple she was

brought up in a society of pious virgins, diligently read the Holy Scriptures, did needlework, constantly praying and

growing in love for God.

The Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin – is a foretelling of the grace of God to the human race, the preaching of

salvation, the promise of Christ's coming.

The Most Caring Child Author and lecturer Leo Buscaglia once talked about a contest he was asked to judge. The purpose of the contest was to find the most caring child. The winner was: 1. A four-year-old child, whose next door neighbor was an elderly gentleman, who had recently lost his wife. Upon

seeing the man cry, the little boy went into the old gentleman's' yard, climbed onto his lap, and just sat there. When his mother asked him what he had said to the neighbor, the little boy just said, “Nothing, I just helped him cry”. 2. An eye witness account from New York City, on a cold day in December, some years ago: A little boy, about 10-

years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering

with cold. A lady approached the young boy and said, “My, but you're in such deep thought staring in that window!”

“I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,” was the boy's reply.

The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy.

She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her. She took the little

fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with

the towel.

By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of

shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, “No

doubt, you will be more comfortable now.”

As she turned to go, the astonished boy caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her: “Are you God's wife?”

Church Steps

Please accept our most sincere thank you for your positive response to our recent fundraising appeal to cover

the costs of replacing the steps leading to the Church. We are indeed grateful to all who have donated. Your

positive response to our appeal reflects the tremendous support we continue to receive from our members

and supporters. We will be providing a detailed report on the total cost of this project at our annual meeting,

as there is still one small outstanding related task that must be completed. At this point, however, it is evident

that we still need your assistance in order to cover all the related costs. Therefore, your continued support in

this respect is not only appreciated but vital at this time.
