Oh! John, just right for a perfect nights sleep.

    W H Y U N DE R LA Y ?

Whether you buy, sell or install carpets, it is important to know that

a good quality underlay contributes greatly to comfort and luxury

and, no less important, to a longer effective life of the carpet.

In addition, underlay is sound-absorbing, while the carpet can

always be moved easily. In the event the floor covering opted for

has a hard (e.g. jute) or action backing, carpet manufacturers

recommend installing a resilient underlay, for example BestBase

and Egalsoft. On the whole, it is always sensible to use underlay.

In this brochure, we are glad to explain why.

Underlay is the best substrate for installing wall-to-wall textile

floor covering. Underlay is widely used for domestic purposes,

for example in living rooms, bedrooms and on stairs.

Primarily, underlay has a levelling function, compensating possible

unevennesses in the substrate. Other outstanding characteristics of

underlay are that it contributes to comfort, improves sound, cold and

heat insulation and that it has good impression-resistant qualities.

Before installing carpet and underlay, first take a close look at

the substrate. No projections or nails may be left behind in the

substrate that may cause damage. New, concrete floors require

extra attention. They can be hard to clean and also after a longer

period may still produce sand particles. Thoroughly removing

dust and grease is a must here. The solution is to pretreat such

substrate with a special (anhydrite) primer.

Tensioning: perfect fit with the plinth, re-stretching if necessary,

    requires expertise, easy to move.

Gluing: sturdy, tight installation; no need for re-stretching.

Egalsoft: easy, removable, in places where nailing or gluing is

    impossible.

The interests and health of the installer take precedence.

Therefore, the rolls of BestBase and Egalsoft underlay are designed

to comply with high standards of convenience and health.

Light-weight, easy to handle and pleasant to work with. BestBase is

100% recyclable and thus contributes to improving the environment.

You have to nail in carpet grippers in the concrete all round the

area to be carpeted. If nailing is impossible (for example, due to the

presence of floor heating), then they can also be glued using special

carpet gripper adhesive. Carpet grippers are provided with slanted

hooks that have to laid pointing towards the wall. Between the

grippers you cut the underlay (Estillon Felt Winner) to size and

then place it at right angles to the direction in which the carpet is

laid. You can tape the seams of the underlay together. A simple,

inexpensive tape will do. The cut- to- size carpet (with some

overlap) now rests on the underlay. As an installer you can use a

knee-kicker for smaller rooms, while a power stretcher is more

suitable for larger spaces. Stretching should first be done

lengthwise and then widthwise. With the knee-kicker, which

contains a sort of nails you can slide in and out, you pick up the

carpet and pull it over the grippers, so that it falls back into the

carpet grippers and gets fixed. You can now push the carpet behind

the grippers using a carpet punch and cut off any remnants.

Its always possible to take up carpet and underlay for re-use.

    Installing Egalsoft

The substrate must be cleared of dust and grease. If necessary,

you can provide an extra fixation layer (BestBase First Step) along

the edges of the facility to be carpeted and in places subject to

pressure (e.g. door openings, corridor). Egalsoft can then be rolled

out with the fixation layer downwards and at right angles or diagonal

to the laying direction of the carpet. Ensure that the carpet fits proper-

ly to the plinth. Remove any excess material. Press the underlay

well and take care that the seams connect properly. We advise you

to tape the seams of the underlay together. Take care that the

underlay is not put under pressure. You then have to adequately

roll the underlay in place using the glider especially developed for

Egalsoft. The carpet can be easily slid in position over Egalsoft.

Once the carpet is in place, you can turn it back on one side to

apply the adhesive. For this purpose use a notched trowel (e.g.

TKB-A2, finely toothed). Then, press the carpet well. For the other

side of the carpet, follow the same procedure. Its always possible

to freely take up the carpet with Egalsoft underlay.

The substrate must be clean, compression-resistant and be stable

as to shape, level and permanently dry. You can apply the antislip

compound (BestBase First Step) to the substrate using a paint

roller. When applied, BestBase First Step is yellow in colour and

after approx. 20 minutes has dried to a fully transparent coat.

You can now lay the underlay (Bestbase Elegance CL), provided at

the back with antislip, at right angles to the direction in which the

carpet is laid. Following, cut off any remnants at the ends, ensuring

that the underlay makes a tight fit with the plinth. Next, you can fix

the seams of the underlay using double-sided tape. The carpet can

be easily slid in place over the crpe paper backing of BestBase

Elegance CL. Turn the carpet back on one side and apply the

adhesive (BestBase Strip Step) to the underlay using a finely

notched trowel (TKB-A2). Then turn the carpet back to provide the

other side with sufficient adhesive. Press the carpet well and cut off

any remnants ensuring a proper fit with the plinth. The application

time of the adhesive depends on temperature and humidity.

BestBase Strip Step glue in combination with BestBase Elegance

CL Underlay makes it possible to separate the carpet from the

BestBase underlay and to re-use and recycle it.
