In1492,thatchanged.Inthatyear,ChristopherColumbussailedacrosstheAtlanticOceanandaccidentallylandedonislandsoffthecoastoftheAmericas.HisexplorationsmarkedthestartoftheAgeofExploration.

AsnewsspreadaboutwhatColumbushadfound,menfromalloverSpainracedtofindtreasure.Spanishconquistadors,suchasFranciscoVasquezdeCoronado,setoutinsearchofsilverandgold.Theyslashedtheirwaythroughswamps.Theymarchedacrossdeserts.Theyexploredandconqueredmanylands.

Afewyearslater,otherEuropeancountriesgotinvolved.JohnCabotwentexploringforEngland.HenryHudsonexploredforEnglandandfortheNetherlands.SamueldeChamplainexploredforFrance.

Theseexplorerschangedtheworld.TheyconnectedEuropewiththeAmericas.Youwillreadaboutsomeoftheirjourneyshere.

The Lure of SpicesManyEuropeanexplorerswerehopingtofindgoldandother preciousmetals.

Youcanprobablyunderstandwhyexplorerswereeagertofindgold.Goldisavaluablemetaleventoday.However,youmaybesurprisedtolearnthatmanyexplorerswerealsoexcitedaboutfindingspices.Youmightbesaying,“Spices?Really?Whyweretheysoeagertofindspices?”

Here’stheanswer:Thingsthatarescarce,orhardtofind,tendtobeexpensive.That’swhygoldisexpensivetoday.That’salsowhyspiceswereexpensivefivehundredyearsago.Backthen,spiceswerescarceinEurope.Theywerehardtofind.Sotheycostalot.Somespiceswerealmostworththeirweightingold.

Theredballsinthecenterofthisimageareredpeppercorns.Acookcanaddafewwholepeppercornstosoup.Hecanuseaspicegrindertogrindthepeppercornsintotinybits.Eitherway,thepepperwilladdflavortothesoup.Itwillmakethesoupspicierandtastier.

Totheleftoftheredpeppercorns,youcanseewhitepeppercorns.Thesecomefromthesameplantsasredpeppercornsbuttheyarepreparedinadifferentway.Whitepeppercornsstartoutasred peppercornsbuttheouterhulloftheredpeppercornisremovedtorevealtheinnerkernel,whichiswhite.Theycanbeusedinthesamewayasredpeppercorns.

Theblackbowlintheupperrightofthisimageisfilledwithcloves.Clovesaredriedflowerbuds.Theyareusedtoaddflavortomeatsandstews,someteas,andpumpkinpie.Clovesareverystrong.Cookswhousethemmustbecarefulbecauseaddingtoomanyofthemmayoverwhelmotherflavorsinthedish.

Wesetofflastspringandreachedtheplains.Theseplainswerevast—sovast thatwecouldnotseetheendofthem.Theywereflatandopenwithgrassesthatblowinthebreeze.Wetraveledoverthemformorethan300leagues.The plainswerefullofcows.Thereweretoomanyofthemtocount.Therewasnotasingledaywhenwedidnotseesomeofthem.

After17days,wemetsomenativepeople.TheyarecalledQuerechos[Ker-AE-koez].Theydonotplantcrops.Theytravelaroundwiththecows.Theyeatthefleshofthecowstheykill.Theytantheskinsofthecowsandmakeclothesfromthem.Theyhavelittletentsmadeofcowhide.Theyliveinthesetentswhiletheytravelaroundwiththecows.Theyhavedogsthatcarrytheirtentsandpolesfromplacetoplace.

Wetraveled42daysmore.Attimes,itwashardtofindtheway.Ontheplains,therearefewlandmarks.Therearenohills.Therearenostones,trees,orshrubs.Allwecouldseewasaseaofgrass.

Welivedonthefleshofthecowswekilled.Wewentmanydayswithoutwater.Sometimes,whatwedrankwasmoremudthanwater.Therearenotreesontheplainsexceptbytherivers.So,wecouldrarelyfindfirewood.
