This year is the 10th anniversary of the founding of AIU. We decided to carry out a project to commemorate this founding to express our gratitude to many people who have supported us along the way, as well as use this as an oppor-tunity to share our Akita-based International Liberal Arts education with the world and further develop as a university that leads our country’s global human resources and con-tributes to local society. On September 27th of last year, we created a 10th Founding Anniversary Commemorative Project Executive Committee, comprised of people affiliated with the university (including myself), and people involved in government admin-istration and the economy. The committee president is Yasu-shi Akashi (chair of AIU President’s Advisory Board and Former Under-Secretary General of the United Nations). Concretely, as part of this project we plan to formulate a 10-year Long-Term Vision, hold a commemorative ceremony and international symposium, honor former President Mineo Nakajima, and expand our scholarship system, among others. In order to carry out this project, we are also collect-ing monetary donations. We will continue to persevere in our efforts and attempts to develop global human resources who have firmly estab-lished their individuality, have deep dialogues with and mutual understanding of others, display leadership, and are able to take responsibility for their actions. 　本学は今年開学10周年を迎えます。これまで御支援いただいた多くの皆様に感謝するとともに、今後、秋田から全世界へ国際教養教育を発信し、我が国のグローバル人材育成をけん引する大学として、また、地域社会に貢献する大学としてさらに発展する契機とするため、開学10周年記念事業を行うことといたしました。　昨年9月27日に、私を含めた大学関係者、行政、経済界関係者などで構成する10周年記念事業実行委員会を立ち上げ、委員長には明石康先生（本学トップ諮問会議議長・元国連事務次長）に就任いただいております。具体的な事業としては、今後10年間の長期ビジョンの策定、記念式典・国際シンポジウムの開催、中嶋嶺雄前学長の顕彰､奨学金制度の拡充などを計画しており、こうした事業を実施するため、募金活動も開始しております。　今後とも、グローバル社会において、しっかりとした「個」を確立し、対話と相互理解を深め、リーダーシップを発揮し、自分の行動に責任をとれるグローバル人材の育成に弛まぬ努力と挑戦を重ねてまいります。皆様の暖かい御支援、御協力をお願いいたします。

Hello, my name is Daisuke Yokoi. I am a member of the 10th graduating class and was selected to be the Student President (Student Government Executive Committee Chair-man) last December. While the work of the Student Govern-ment Executive Committee - commonly called the “Student Government”- is not glamorous, the committee serves impor-tant roles for students in that it works as a “bridge” between the students and the university (conveying the students’ opinions to the university and holding organizing activities in cooperation with the university, etc.) manages all student activit ies, controls the student committees and the club/circles’ budgets. The workload is immense and requires precision. I would like to introduce a part of the Student Government’s work. Presently, the Student Government is storing the belong-

昨年12月に学生会長（学生会執行委員会会長）に選出された10期生の横井大輔です。学生会執行委員会、通称学生会の活動内容は地味ですが、大学と学生の架け橋（学生の意見を大学に伝える、大学と連携して活動を行うなど）、全学生の様々な活動の支援、学生会傘下の各委員会、クラブ・サークルの予算･決算管理等、重要な役割を担っています。その仕事量は膨大で、かつ正確さが求められます。学生会の具体的な活動の一部を紹介させていただきます。 現在学生会では、留学や冬季休暇で大学を離れる学生の荷物を保管したり、学生が使わなくなった物をフリーマーケットへ出品するための準備を行ったりしています。加えて、春学期の新入生オリエンテーションで、委員会やクラブ・サークルを紹介する「アクティビティ・フェア」の準備も行っているところです。 どの活動も決して華のあるものではなく、楽しさだけで続けていけるものではありません。しかし、私は、学生会の活動は、必ずや今後の人生に活きてくるものだと信じています。国際教養大学へ興味を持っていただいている皆様には、ぜひ学生主体で行っている学生会の活動など、大学の細部にまで目を向けていただきたいと思います。

A donation to AIU is deemed a donation to a public university corporation, so tax benefits apply. Corporate donors may write off donations as losses or deductions from individual earnings.

ings of study abroad students and students who leave campus during the winter break, while preparing unused belongings to be sold at flea markets. In addition, we are also getting ready to introduce various student committees and student clubs, circles and groups at the “Activity Fair”during the New Student Orientation in the coming Spring semester. While these understated activities are not necessarily ones we continue to engage in solely for fun, I believe the experience gained through the Student Government will be useful in our lives in the future. And for those who have an interest in Akita International University, I would recommend taking a look into the detailed workings of the student-centered Student Government.

　本学故中嶋嶺雄前学長が秋田県文化功労者に選ばれ、11月1日（金）に表彰式が行われました。　秋田県文化功労者表彰は、秋田県文化の向上発展に卓越した功績のある個人や団体を顕彰するもので、中嶋前学長は、本学の設立を構想段階から陣頭指揮し、開学後もグローバル人材の育成を理念とした新しい大学づくりに邁進し、卓越したリーダーシップにより、短期間で国内外で高い評価を得るまでに至るなど、秋田県の教育研究の充実・高等教育の発展に多大なる功績があったとして選出されました。　当日は中嶋洋子夫人が出席し、佐竹知事から表彰を受けました。

Open Campus and 10th Annual AIU Festival / オープンキャンパス・第10回ＡＩＵ祭

An Open Campus is held three times every year, in July, September, and October. It is a perfect opportunity to directly experience life at AIU through mock classes, entrance exam seminars, study abroad presentation, campus tours, etc. There were many participants, with mainly prospective students and their guardians gathering from throughout the country. At the first Open Campus on July 14th (Sunday) there were 1,016 people, at the second on Sep-tember 15th (Sunday) there were 778 people, and the third on October 13th (Sunday) included 554 people. Students join together to put on the AIU Festival once a year. This year, it was held for the tenth time on October 13th (Sunday) and 14th (Monday, a holiday). In addition to food stands and colorful events on an open-air stage that were rich in international flavor, on the 13th President Suzuki, current students, and alumni representatives held a discussion about the future of the university. On the 14th, AIU professors gave talks about the universe, relat-ing to the theme of this year’s festival: “GalaXy: The Points and Lines we Draw.” Furthermore, there were talks by university staff and a concert by Sarii Miura (a native of Nikaho, Akita). Both days were filled with numerous events and including the third Open Campus participants, approximately 7,000 people in total visited AIU. The AIU Festival is a wonderful opportunity to come into contact with various cultures while being in Akita. We greatly wel-come you to visit AIU when you have a chance.

　オープンキャンパスは、毎年7月、9月、10月の年3回開催し、模擬授業、入試セミナー、就職セミナー、留学体験談発表、キャンパスツアーなどにより、ＡＩＵでの生活を直接体験できる絶好の機会になっています。　第1回の7月14日（日）に1,016名、第2回の9月15日（日）に778名、第3回の10月13日（日）に554名と、高校生、保護者を中心に全国各地から多くの方々に御参加いただきました。　また、ＡＩＵ祭は学生が一丸となって行う年1回のイベントです。今年度は第10回を迎え、10月13日（日）と14日（月・祝）の両日に行われました。国際色豊かな屋台や野外ステージでの多彩なイベントに加え、13日には鈴木学長と在学生、卒業生の代表による本学の将来についての対談が行われ、14日には今年度のＡＩＵ祭のテーマである「GalaXy ー僕らが描く点と線ー」にちなんだ、本学教授による宇宙にまつわる講演やベテラン事務職員による講演、秋田県にかほ市出身の歌手、三浦サリーさんのライブなどが行われました。両日とも盛りだくさんの内容で行われ、第3回のオープンキャンパスと合わせて約7,000名の方々に来学いただきました。秋田に居ながら、多文化に触れることができるのがAIU祭です。ぜひ一度、御来学ください。

5th Annual Homecoming / 第5回ホームカミング

On November 2nd (Saturday), the fifth annual home-coming was held at AIU with 23 graduates and 66 current students participating. The first half consisted of a discus-sion session, with graduates Taijiro Itagaki and Takahiko Rikiishi (both members of the second graduating class) exchanging opinions regarding “AIU’s education” and “its ideal form” with Pipe Committee representative Minehiro Kishi (member of the sixth graduating class) and Associate Professor Ken Isogai. At the ensuing networking event, and after President Norihiko Suzuki’s welcoming remarks, participants enjoyed a “Jenga Competition,” and the winner was awarded a luxurious prize. A dinner banquet was thereafter held in the second half of the homecoming where current students passionately conversed with graduates they had met for only the first time, which was a very memorable sight. Towards the end, a movie that was enthusiastically created by the Pipe Committee was shown, putting a smile on everyone’s face. We would like to thank the graduates for coming all the way to AIU to participate and look forward to seeing you again.

　11月2日（土）、卒業生23名と在学生66名が本学に集い、第5回ホームカミングが開催されました。第1部の討論会では「AIUの教育」や「今後のあるべき姿」について、卒業生の板垣泰二朗さんと力石孝彦さん（ともに2期生）が、パイプ委員会代表の岸峰大さん（6期生）及び磯貝健准教授と意見を交わしました。その後の交流会では、鈴木典比古学長の歓迎挨拶の後、「ジェンガ大会」で盛り上がり、勝者には豪華賞品が授与されました。第2部の晩餐会では、在学生が初めて出会う先輩方と熱心に語り合う姿が印象的でした。会の終わりには、パイプ委員が心を込めて作成した映像が上映され、会場が笑顔で満たされました。遠路はるばる参加いただいた卒業生の皆様、ありがとうございました。またお会いしましょう。

　2012年度の文部科学省グローバル人材育成推進事業の採択を受け、本学では開学から掲げている「グローバル人材育成」という目標を、「グローバル・リーダー人材育成」へと高める取組に挑戦しています。　教育力と学修支援機能を強化することで、学生に自ら学ぶ意欲と姿勢を身に付けさせ、グローバル社会に貢献するリーダーに求められる資質と能力を養成していく取組ですが、本学の取組を広報し、また産官学からの人材育成に関する意見を広く取り入れ今後の本学の人材育成の参考とするため、昨秋、いくつかのシンポジウムを開催しました。　10月25日（金）には、羽田空港を会場に、「グローバル人材育成と国際教養教育」と題したシンポジウムを開催し、鈴木典比古学長による基調講演、産学官の代表を講師に招いた講演、パネルディスカッションなどが行われました。

The late former Akita International University President Mineo Nakajima was selected as an Akita Prefecture “Person of Cultural Merit”. The award ceremony was held on November 1st (Friday). The Akita Prefectural “Person of Cultural Merit” designation honors individuals and groups that have significantly contributed to the advancement and development of Akita Prefecture’s culture. Former President Nakajima was chosen on the basis of his considerable accomplishments in the enhancement of educa-tional research and the development of higher education in Akita Prefecture. These accomplishments include his supervision of Akita International University’s establishment from its planning stages, and, after the opening of the university, working to build it as a school that aims to develop global human resources, as well as becoming highly regarded both in Japan and overseas in a short span of time for his excellent leadership. On behalf of Dr. Nakajima, the former president’s wife, Yoko Nakajima, attended the ceremony, and accepted the award from Governor Satake.

　11月12日（火）には、同じくグローバル人材育成推進事業に採択されている関西学院大学との共催シンポジウムを東京で開催しました。「大学から企業へ－世界で活かす日本のちから－」というテーマのもと、大学の種別・歴史や規模などでまったく異なる両大学の人材育成の取組を紹介し、また、両大学の学生がパネラーとして参加したパネルディスカッションでは、大学生活での経験をもとに、これから社会で活躍するに当たっての抱負や将来のビジョンなどについて意見を交わしました。　11月18日（月）には、経団連会館を会場に「グローバル人材育成－若者のポテンシャルを伸ばすには－」と題したキャリアシンポジウムを開催し、企業内での人材育成の取組事例を紹介いただいた後、本学の卒業生をパネラーに加えてパネルディスカッションが行われました。　今後も、同事業を活用し様々な取組を行ってまいります。

Having been chosen by the Ministry of Education, Cul-ture, Sports, Science and Technology to be part of its Proj-ect for the Promotion of Global Human Resource Develop-ment in the 2012 academic year, we are working to raise the goal that has been held from the university’s inception of “Global Human Resource Development” to “Global Leader Human Resource Development.” This is an effort to, by strengthening the university’s educational power and learning support capabilities, help students acquire the desire and attitude to learn on their own as well as cultivate the abilities and capacities sought in leaders that contribute to our global society. In order to publicize such efforts and widely incorporate and take into account future opinions regarding human resource develop-ment from industry, government, and academia, several symposiums were held last fall. On October 25th (Friday), the symposium “Global Human Resource Development and International Liberal Arts Educa-tion” was held at Haneda Airport. University President Nori-hiko Suzuki gave the keynote address, speakers represent-ing industry, academia, and government gave talks, and a panel discussion was held.

On November 12th (Tuesday), a joint symposium was held in Tokyo with Kansai University, which has also been chosen to be part of the Project for the Promotion of Global Human Resource Development. Under the theme “From Uni-versities to Companies: Making use of the Power of Japan in the World,” a completely different human resource devel-opment effort (in terms of type, history, scale, and so on) of the two universities was introduced. In the following panel discussion, student panelists from both universities exchanged opinions about their ambitions, visions, and the active roles they will play in society in the future based on their experiences at school. On November 18th (Monday), a career symposium entitled “Global Human Resource Development: Extending the Potential of Young People” was held at the Japan Busi-ness Federation. After examples of human resource devel-opment efforts in companies were introduced, there was a panel discussion that included graduates of Akita Interna-tional University serving as panelists. From here onwards, we plan to carry out various efforts that make use of the Project for the Promotion of Global Human Resource Development.
