Postgraduate education matters now more than ever. The contribution of postgraduates to the global economy cannot be overstated; they form the high-level skills base and knowledge economy that we need to invest in if we are to safeguard our financial, scientific, and intellectual futures.

The contribution to the individual is even more profound. As well as the economic benefits – people with a postgraduate qualification can expect to earn £5,000 more a year on average (or £200,000 over a 40-year working life*) than someone only holding a Bachelor’s degree – a postgraduate degree can open a world of other opportunities.

From specific careers that require specialist training – be that in engineering, education, academia, or healthcare – to highly competitive industries and businesses where an extra level of expertise can give you the edge, and, especially, to the

joy of learning, discovering, and understanding a subject you feel passionate about to the very deepest level, you will find that a postgraduate qualification will be one of the most rewarding things you ever do.

I come from a working class background, and was told that ‘people like you don’t go to university.’ But I was lucky enough to have a teacher who gave me the confidence to succeed, and I was the first person in my family to go to university. That experience, for me, has fired a life-long focus on access to education. University is about achieving potential, not simply a reward for where you were born in life. We need to invest, both intellectually and financially, in the people who are generating new knowledge and teaching future generations, and the key way to do that is through postgraduate education.

POSTGRADUATE STUDY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER

Although the University celebrates its Diamond Jubilee in 2015, it traces its origins back to schools and colleges established in the nineteenth century.

The Great Exhibition of 1851 spawned local Schools of Art and Science, which in 1868 were housed in the Albert Memorial Museum on Queen Street. Enthusiasm for extra-mural studies grew and, with support from the University of Cambridge, in 1893 the college became the Exeter Technical and University Extension College.

In 1900 its official title was changed to the Royal Albert Memorial College. This in turn became the University College of the South West of England in 1922 and, finally, in 1955, the College received its Charter as the University of Exeter.

Over the years since the University has moved from its city centre sites to the Streatham estate on the edge of the city, and there has been much development, including the incorporation of St Luke’s College of Education (1978) and Camborne School of Mines (1993), and the opening of the Penryn Campus in Cornwall (2004).

Today the University consists of six Academic Colleges covering every aspect of the sciences, humanities, and social sciences, and has campuses at Penryn and Truro in Cornwall, and Streatham and St Luke’s in Exeter.

Postgraduate study is a level above undergraduate study, and consequently places serious academic demands on you as a student.

The majority of taught postgraduate programmes at Exeter are Masters degrees. These normally combine advanced level tuition with the completion of a dissertation under the guidance of an individual member of staff. Many of our taught degrees follow a flexible modular format whereby you can choose from a range of specialist pathways or combine modules from a range of areas so that you can tailor your programme to your own interests.

MA, MSc, MResWe offer the Master of Arts (MA), Master of Science (MSc) and the Master of Research (MRes). The MRes degree, highly valued by employers, combines advanced subject-specific tuition with advanced level training in the methodological, analytic and research skills which are vital for the undertaking of further research. Also on offer are other specialist taught postgraduate degrees, such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master of Laws (LLM).

Several of our subjects also offer the opportunity to study a Masters by Research, giving you the opportunity to gain a Masters degree by carrying out an independent research project in a specific subject under the supervision of an academic expert, rather than via scheduled tuition. Part-time study and distance learningMost Masters programmes are 11-12 months full-time, with many programmes also available for part-time study and lasting roughly twice as long. Please note that international students are subject to visa regulations which normally prevent part-time study. Increasingly we offer distance-learning programmes which require little or no attendance at our campuses and enable you to study for a postgraduate qualification from Exeter, anywhere

in the world. Some programmes are delivered via ‘block teaching’; intensive 1-2 week bursts of on-campus lectures, seminars, and activities, which can fit more easily around your working life.

PgCert and PgDip Some of our Masters degrees can be taken in a shorter form, which omit the dissertation or some of the taught modules. Whereas a Masters programme represents 180 credits, Postgraduate Diplomas (120 credits) and Postgraduate Certificates (60 credits) covering only taught modules are also available in a number of subject areas. We also offer Graduate Diplomas; pre-Master’s programmes for international students which enhance your subject knowledge, study skills, and English ability.

Contact hours Contact hours vary between programmes: science courses can involve an almost 9-5 schedule of lectures, meetings, and lab sessions; whilst humanities degrees may feature only a few hours of timetabled classes a week, but will require you to undertake a substantial amount of reading and research outside of official teaching hours. If you are studying full-time, expect to be working approximately 40 hours per week towards your degree.

Research degrees This prospectus deals primarily with postgraduate taught programmes. The University also offers a full range of postgraduate research degrees. In addition to Masters by Research, you can also study for Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees, and a number of professional doctorates (some of which are detailed in this prospectus). WHAT IS POSTGRADUATE STUDY?

The life of an MA student is busy. When I applied I was aware there would be a step up, but the levels of commitment demanded from you are pretty large. Not so large that they’re unmanageable, but you do have to dedicate a lot of your life to organisation and reading. That said, this has undoubtedly been the best six months of my life. Athena SWAN Athena SWAN is a Charter that recognises the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM). Within STEMM disciplines, women are typically under-represented at senior levels and this is ubiquitous across the Higher Education sector.

The University is a proud member of the Athena SWAN Charter and holds a Bronze institutional award and two departmental Bronze awards: the University of Exeter Medical School and the combined disciplines of Biology and Geography at the Penryn Campus.

All STEMM departments at Exeter are committed to the Athena SWAN Charter and seven departments made applications in April 2014: Engineering, Mathematics and

Computer Science, Physics, Psychology, Geography, and Sport and Health Sciences, with the University of Exeter Medical School making an application for Silver building on their existing Bronze award.

Our Classics and Ancient History department has also recently been accepted on to the Gender Equality Charter Mark (GEM) trial, which is expected to roll out nationwide in October 2014.

The student’s research assists the business or charity they are working with. Undertaken by all Research Councils except the AHRC, who run a similar scheme (CDA awards).

The MSc provided excellent training across a range of conservation topics, in addition to analysis and writing peer-reviewed articles, and I have no doubt that the skills acquired during my Masters course have led me to the excellent position that I am in now. Living costsLiving costs are, to some extent, up to you. You will need to make choices about how you live and what your priorities are, but make sure you factor in:

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING Postgraduates play a vital role in our research and student community – but we understand that funding your studies can be a major barrier to realising your ambitions. As such we make a number of scholarships available each year, and signpost a great deal more for potential students. During 2013/14, nearly 280 Masters students received some form of scholarship.

Who is eligible for a scholarship? Most scholarships are highly competitive and merit-based, so we recommend investigating options early as deadlines and eligibility vary. You will need at least a British Upper Second Class degree (2:1) or its international equivalent in order to be considered by any of the main funding bodies.

What scholarships are available? The table opposite provides details of schemes confirmed at the time of going to print.

3. Follow the instructions Competition can be fierce. Make sure you complete your funding application(s) thoroughly and professionally and ensure you submit by the advertised deadlines, which can be up to a year before the start of your programme.

Alternative fundingMany students are using innovative alternative measures to secure funding for their postgraduate degrees. These can include crowdfunding services such as www.studentfunder.com, www.indiegogo.com, or www.hubbub.net. It may be worth researching the options available via these services to see if they would suit your needs.

Streatham Campus The Streatham Campus, the University’s largest site, is built around a country estate on the edge of the city centre and is readily acknowledged as one of the most beautiful in the country.

A registered Botanic Garden, Streatham Campus is described by The Times as the “best-gardened campus in Britain”. The grounds feature many exotic trees and shrubs and stunning views across the city to the sea at Exmouth. St Luke’s CampusThe St Luke’s Campus is 15 minutes’ walk from the city centre and just over a mile away from the Streatham Campus across the city. It is home to students in the Graduate School of Education, the School of Sport and Health Sciences, and the University of Exeter Medical School.

Students have studied at St Luke’s for over 150 years and although much has changed over the years, the Campus has

CORNWALL

Penryn CampusThe Penryn Campus is set in 100 acres of countryside, close to the waterside town of Falmouth, and boasts beautiful views over the Fal estuary. It offers peace and tranquillity as well as a lively student community. Accounting and Finance programmes at Exeter are well-established, research-led, and relevant for professional careers. The MSc Finance and Investment was the first finance Masters to be launched in the UK, 40 years ago, and we have developed a succession of innovative programmes ever since, including MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management. This was one of the first postgraduate degrees in the UK designed with the aim of combining a Masters programme with Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) examinations.

Archaeology at Exeter is currently involved in many exciting projects in Britain and around the world. In addition to academic classes for Masters students, there will be many opportunities for both Masters and Research students to become personally involved with the research being conducted in the department. We currently have active fieldwork and research projects in Britain, Europe, South America, North America, Central Asia and South Asia. Students have taken part in all these projects. In addition to lectures, we also have regular visiting speakers who talk about new discoveries. We encourage all our students to get involved and take an active role in our academic community.

Archaeology, as a discipline, will be able to offer you a wide range of personal, academic and practical skills. This suite of abilities should stand you in good stead for whatever future programme or career you decide to take.

Our facilities include dedicated workrooms for postgraduate students, a landscape research room, and chemical laboratory facilities.

Biosciences at the University of Exeter is a vibrant and rapidly expanding centre for research and teaching across a broad spectrum of biological sciences. Drama at Exeter is an internationally-renowned centre for practice, research and teaching. We are currently 1st for Drama in The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2014 and have been 1st in the National Student Survey (NSS) on five separate occasions.

We host three Research Centres within the department: the Centre for Contemporary Performance Practices; the Centre for Performance, Sciences and Community; and the Centre for Performance Histories and Cultures. Our teaching grows out of our wide-ranging research interests and we provide a supportive and high quality environment for learning. We are one of the largest and best equipped Drama departments in the UK (with over twenty permanent staff, eleven practice studios, and more than a dozen other seminar, workshop and multimedia spaces) and offer a supportive and stimulating environment for postgraduate research and practice, welcoming students from all around the world.

The Economics department has been ranked in the top league of all Economics departments in the UK in all of the previous Research Assessment Exercises (RAE). This reflects the high calibre of the faculty and their contributions to both theoretical and applied economics.

I wanted a fast-paced, independent, learner-directed style of learning, along with seminar and tutorial-based instruction, and that is what I have received. ProgrammesMA AnthrozoologyThis award winning MA is directed by Dr Samantha Hurn, author of a core textbook on anthrozoology, the interdisciplinary study of human-animal instructions. Designed for anyone who would like to investigate the ways in which humans perceive, engage, compete and co-exist with animals. Delivered via distance learning, the programme is particularly suitable for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for those who work with animals eg, vets, animal trainers and conservationists.

Research is at the heart of the department of Theology and Religion, which boasts a diverse and vibrant group of students from many parts of the world. Our current research interests and expertise encompass biblical studies, early Jewish studies, early Christian history, modern theology, practical and ecumenical theology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and the interface between science and religion; and much more.
