Los Verbos Reflexivos
*A reflexive verb tells you that only the subject of the verb is involved in the action. In
other words, it “reflects” the action of the verb back to the subject.
*You can tell that a verb is reflexive because it has ________ attached to the end of it.
*To conjugate a reflexive verb, you must:
1. take the “se” off of the end
2. put the correct reflexive pronoun before the conjugated verb
3. conjugate the verb according to the subject in whatever tense is necessary
(present, preterite, imperfect)
Los pronombres reflexivos
yo nosotros
tú
él, ella
usted
ellos, ellas
ustedes
Unos ejemplos: lavarse (yo) _______________________________________
secarse (ella) ______________________________________
*Like object pronouns, reflexive pronouns generally appear before a conjugated verb.
With infinitives (unconjugated verbs) and present participles (-ando/-iendo), they may be
placed before the conjugated verb OR attached to the infinitive or present participle.
Ellos se van a vestir. OR Ellos van a vestirse. They are going to get dressed.
Nos estamos lavando las manos. OR Estamos lavándonos* las manos. We are washing our hands.
*¡Atención! When a reflexive pronoun is attached to a present participle, an accent mark
is added to maintain the original stress.
bañando bañándose durmiendo durmiéndose

Los Reflejos Recíprocos *Reciprocal reflexives express a shared or reciprocal action between two or more people or
things. In this context, the pronoun means (to) each other or (to) one another.
*Only the plural forms of the reflexive pronoun (nos, se) are used to express reciprocal
actions because the action must involve more than one person or thing.
Cuando nos vimos en la calle, nos abrazamos.
When we saw (each other) on the street, we hugged (one another).
Las amigas se saludaron y se besaron.
The friends greeted (each other) and kissed (one another).

Las Palabras Negativas e Indefinidas
*Indefinite words refer to people and things that are not specific, for example, someone
or something.
*Negative words deny the existence of people and things or contradict statements, for
example, no one or nothing.
*Spanish indefinite words have corresponding negative words, which are opposite in
meaning. (see chart below)
Indefinite words
-algo: something, anything
-alguien: someone, somebody, anyone
-alguno(a)(os)(as), algún: some, any
-o…o: either…or
-siempre: always
-también: also, too
Negative words
-nada: nothing, not anything
-nadie: no one, nobody, not anyone
-ninguno(a)(os)(as), ningún: no, none, not any
-ni…ni: neither…nor
-nunca, jamás: never, not ever
-tampoco: neither, not either
*There are two ways to form negative sentences in Spanish. You can place the negative
word before the verb, or you can place no before the verb & the negative word after.
No one gets up early. Nadie se levanta temprano. OR No se levanta nadie temprano.
They never put on makeup.
_____________________________ OR _____________________________
*Because they refer to people, alguien and nadie are often used with the personal a. The
personal a is also used before alguno(a), algunos(as), and ninguno(a) when these words
refer to people and they are the direct object of the verb.
--Perdón señora, ¿busca usted a alguien? --Tomás, ¿buscas a alguno de tus hermanos?
--No, gracias, señorita, no busco a nadie. --No, mamá, no busco a ninguno.
¡Atención! Before a masculine singular noun, alguno and ninguno are shortened to algún and
ningún.
--¿Tienen ustedes algún amigo peruano? --No, no tenemos ningún amigo peruano.
