GENERAL MILLS CORPORATE

The General Mills Corporate campus was originallydesigned by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill back in1950 from a modern architectonic scheme juxtaposedwith the rural landscape. By acquiring a new corpora-tion, the campus had to be substantially enlarged inorder to make room for the new employees. Thearchitectonic forms intended to house the new entityhad to complement the older building but at the sametime mark out a new space that extended out in front. The initial design idea for the open space surroundingthe new building was to help create the sensation thatthe edifice floated over the landscape, just above amotionless plane of water. The green areas exten-ding on both sides of the building reinforce the geo-metrical composition of the space and establish a linkbetween what was built and the natural area. Themirror effect of the water, the adjacent platforms, andsoft grass-covered hills make an ideal setting for theinstallation of a series of large-scale sculptures dis-persed throughout the open space. The public toiletshave been retained, disguising them with a metalstructure. Gigantic bamboo boxes enclose quieterareas which at night become lamps illuminating thespace.

DIWANG PARK

This original square, located on a narrow parcel mea-suring just 4000 m2, is found in the Luohu district ofthe Chinese city of Shenzen. The project's design hadto take into account the public toilets set in the centreof the square which had to be retained, as well as thecovered canal running below the square. The viewfrom the Diwang tower —the city's tallest building—inspired the architects to make their design. Seeingthe continual flow of traffic and people in this areafrom such heights made them want to reflect the bus-tling city in the forms of the square. According to thearchitects, their intention was to create an atmosphe-re of sharp, superimposed images that resulted in achangeable landscape evoking the course of a river. The curves establish a dialogue with the neighbouringbuildings and become a succession of undulatingpaths that contrast with the right angles of the struc-tures surrounding the parcel.
