Burgundy 2011 En Primeur

“jewel-like wines with beautiful purity”

Tim Atkin MW ... “2011 is a good to very good Burgundy vintage, both for reds and whites. It is not as exceptional as 2009 or 2010—

indeed, it is a little unfortunate to follow two such wonder-ful, if contrasting harvests—but it still ranks among the

best of the last decade, behind 2005, 2009 and 2010, but ahead of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008, in my

opinion. (…)

Prices are set to rise by 5-10% in general, although this will

be offset by the sterling/euro exchange rate, which is healthier than it was a year ago. Some growers may at-

tempt to recoup their losses fom 2012 by pushing up the prices of their 2011s (…) If so, it’s hard to see the fine wine

world refusing to pay them, given the global clamour for

top Burgundy.”

BURGUNDY 2011 EN PRIMEUR

Jewel-like wines with sparkling purity and beauty… 2011 is another small vintage compared to average but not as small as 2012. The wines have lovely texture, all satin and silk, with pretty red fruits and lifted aromatics, ripe acidity and good length. Those who have managed their vineyards well, picked at the optimum time and utilised extraction methods to suit the style of the vintage, have made delicious wines.

As ever, the best wines dance on the palate with succulent fruit and a mouthwatering finish. Inevitably 2011 Burgundies will be in the shadow of 2009 and 2010, but don’t make the mistake of passing up 2011. Many of these wines will be approachable in their youth and can be enjoyed even before the 08s, 09s and 10s. The 2012 crop is tiny and prices are bound to rocket for the top estates as there simply will not be enough wine to go round, so our recommen-dation is to stock up on the 2011s (and 2010s if you can still find them) to provide some very enjoyable drinking over the next few years.

Vintage Overview by Susan McCraith MW

One of the earliest on record

2011 was harvested nearly a month earlier than 2010. March and April were unseasonably warm which re-sulted in an early flowering. It usually takes 100 days between flowering and harvest and so, after a cool summer which lengthened ripening a little, harvest took place at the end of August and early September.

The lower level of sugar in the grapes at harvest has resulted in slightly lower alcohol levels and many people chaptalized a little. As cellar temperatures were warmer at this time, malo-lactic fermentation took place early in general and this has also contributed to the supple and approachable style of this vintage.

Extraction methods needed to be managed carefully in order to keep the juicy, supple fruit and not dry it out. All in all, this is an earlier drinking vintage, producing softer wines with great charm.

The whites can be enjoyed virtually as soon as they are shipped whilst the reds could well tighten up for a year or so after bottling.

Many growers have increased their prices by 15% anticipating further increases next year when they will have hardly any wine to sell. Rare are those who have kept parity with the pre-vious year’s prices. Much of the increase is offset by the euro exchange rate, but in general it is fair to say that the price of top class burgundy is on the increase...

Not all growers have released their prices so some are marked as TBC (To Be Confirmed). If you are interested in any of these wines please let us know and we will log your details and ad-vise you when they are available

Prices are under bond excluding duty and VAT and are for cases of 12x75cl unless otherwise shown.

Clive Coates MW…

“The reds, l ighter than the 2010s and less exotically rich than the 2009s, are delicious. They may not have enormous backbone, but there are many which have a delightful purity of Pinot fruit – and pure Pi-not is one of the world's most seductive vinous aro-mas. They should not take too long to come round. But while delicious then, I do believe they wil l last, at least in the medium to long term.”

Burgundy En Primeur

for investment?

By Aidan Bell

The top estates and appellations in

Burgundy are becoming increasing-

ly sought-after and prices are ris-

ing. It remains the most complex of

regions and the small scale produc-

tion means that there simply is not

enough wine to go round.

Next year the situation will be exacerbated by the excep-

tionally tiny 2012 crop and prices will rise further due to a

severe shortage of the top wines. We therefore recommend

that you stock up now on this vintage and any 2010s that

are still available as wine will be scarce next year.

The majority of wines in this offer should be purchased with

a view to drinking and secured en primeur because of the

small crop and the quality of the wines. However if you do

have an eye on investment, then do call us and we will be

happy to guide you.

Domaine René Bouvier, Gevrey-Chambertin We were treated to a whirlwind tour of Bernard’s modern cel-lar. Aidan has been following the wines here for many years. If you like deep colours, rounded tannins and fair pricing, these wines are a real hit. Bernard manages to achieve a polish in his wines without losing their personality. We have received lovely feedback from customers who have started to enjoy their pur-chases. Fixin, Crais de Chêne Drink: 2014-2018 Price: £210 per 12 Big colour as always with a lovely ripe nose. Very broad, creamy, bold, juicy wine with ripe tannins. Earthy, mineral finish. Very moreish and easy to enjoy even while young. Gevrey Chambertin, Racines du Temps Drink: 2014-2020 Price: £189 per 6 From two parcels of 80 year old vines. Very deep blackberry fruit. Lots of intensity with dense, creamy tannins. Silky texture with good con-centration. Will need more time to open out fully. Vosne Romanée, Les Croix Blanches Drink: 2015-2020 Price: £189 per 6 Very creamy black fruits. Lovely bold palate with super density. Round blackberry/cherry fruit with supple tannins and good length. Some quite flashy new oak on this barrel sample.

Echézeaux Grand Cru Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £399 per 6 Dark, exotic, spicy nose. Very seductive, savoury fruit with luscious silky texture. No shortage of freshness from ripe acidity. Bold, deep and round. Very long. Lovely! Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £498 per 6 Some spice from the new oak. Quite closed and reticent. Wonderful texture with great density and depth.. Plenty of power and builds well on the finish.

Domaine Rossignol Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin This is a super address if you are looking for wines with per-fume and a silky texture. You won’t find the deepest colours but you will find fabulous succulence on the palate. One can’t help believing in the benefits of biodynamics when you see the energy that emanates from these fine, gracious wines. Gevrey Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes Drink: 2014-2018 Price: £248 per 12 Youthful transparent purple with a shy nose hinting at black fruits. On the palate the fruit has a silkiness with a juicy nugget on the finish. Really lovely wine with balanced, rounded tannins. Latricières Chambertin, Grand Cru Drink: 2015-2024 Price: £396 per 6 Really explosive fruit bomb on the nose. Powerful core of fruit, really love this—long and silky. Fine tannins and lacy, chocolaty finish. Chapelle Chambertin, Grand Cru Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £396 per 6 More reticent with a denser core and solid, juicy finish. Lovely fla-vour which builds beautifully on the mid palate. Very very long. Chambertin, Grand Cru Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £585 per 6 Explosive nose. Ethereal, bejewelled, complete wine in a very gentle deceptive way. There is power here but it is hidden and this is a truly lovely, ‘graceful’ Chambertin.

Domaine Fourrier, Gevrey-Chambertin We have been to taste twice here this vintage and it is always such a treat. Jean-Marie is one of the most eloquent winemak-ers on the Côte d’Or. He has firm opinions but is modest enough to recognize that other people’s methods have merit. He is very clear in his own direction and does not seek colour for colour’s sake or power for power’s sake. His whole aspira-tion is to let the vineyard speak through the wines. There is the most beautiful delineation of flavour and satin texture here and this domaine is very much deserving of its super-star sta-tus. Bourgogne Blanc—we receive a few cases so do contact us if this is of interest. We did not taste it this year. Morey St Denis, Clos Solon Price: £TBC per 6 Very expressive on the nose with open, creamy, chocolaty red fruit and a fresh, bright quality. The acidity gives it a linear energy. Very pretty. Drink: 2015-2019 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Price: £TBC per 6 Gorgeous perfume. Very seductive, pretty aromas with lovely jew-elled fruit on the palate. Silky tannins and a fantastic finish. Drink: 2015-2019 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Goulots Price: £TBC per 6 This wine epitomizes all we look for in top Burgundy. Amazing vinosi-ty. Really velvety texture, so silky! There is magic here… Drink: 2015-2020

Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Price: £TBC per 6 Wonderful mineral and spice notes on the nose with hints of darker fruits. Graceful wine, still a little closed. Top notch Gevrey. Drink: 2015-2020 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St Jacques Price: £TBC per 6 We were fortunate to taste samples from a new and an older oak barrel and then a blend of the two which was heavenly. Very pure as always with such lovely balance and creamy texture. This has the weight of a Grand Cru. Superb. Drink: 2016-2024 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru Price: £TBC per 6 Wonderful intensity on the nose but so closed on the pal-ate. Eventually opens up like a peacock tail on the palate with brilliant elegance. Gloriously layered. Drink: 2016-2026 Jean-Marie has bought some grapes for the first time from Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Aux Echanges, Clos Vougeot and Echezeaux. Please contact us if this is of interest.

Pommard, Vieilles Vignes Drink: 2015-2020 Price: £TBC per 6 It felt odd to be tasting Pommard in the midst of so much Gevrey, but this was well worth it. Deep, earthy nose of great intensity. Rich, dense fruit on the palate with considerable grip. Powerful, structured. This is hugely concentrated Pommard. Gevrey Chambertin, Coeur de Roy Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £TBC per 12 This is the name of the cuvée, not a lieu-dit. The vines are incredibly old, from 50 to 100 years. Very black in colour, densely fruited and rich. Chewy tannins, powerful yet seductive. Oak is very dominant at the moment. A hint of black olives on the finish.

Vosne Romanée Drink: 2015-2025 Price: £TBC per 12 Very spicy on the nose, this is softer with a lovely velvet texture and superb bal-ance. Still dark and intense, this is opulent and seductive. Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru Drink: 2020-2030 Price: £TBC per 6 Intense brooding nose, so ripe there is almost a hint of Demerara sugar. Reticent with lovely defined fruit on the palate. Amazingly concentrated. Really long. Extraordinary.

Domaine Dugat-Py, Gevrey-Chambertin This medieval cellar is a veritable chapel of wine! Bernard is such a jovial soul, he has a perpetual twinkle in his eye. His particu-larly low yields make wine of intense concentration which he manages in the cuverie with a significant amount of new oak. The resulting wines are deeply coloured, aromatic and extremely bold in flavour. Three hours are required in a decanter to enjoy these wines at their full, ideally some 15-20 years after vintage. Bernard is currently drinking his 1995 and 1996 vintages and just starting to enjoy the 2000 and 2003. Prices will not be released until next summer but please register your interest now.

Domaine Louis Boillot, Chambolle-Musigny Louis’ cellar always seem so quiet and calm—you can almost hear the wines sleeping. Another excellent tasting here. Louis looks to make wines of great purity and transparence. Despite the small vin-tage, it is always reassuring when a wine-maker is beaming and content with the wines in their cellar. Next year will be a different matter as the yields were so tiny there will be hardly any to go round.

Gevrey Chambertin Drink: 2015-2019 Price: £249 per 12 Wonderful purity and delineation. Really creamy texture. Crystal clear black fruits. Silky and fine tannins are beautifully round and supple. Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Champonnets Drink: 2015-2020 Price: £450 per 12 Complex nose with very soft, ripe, black fruits. Concentrated, long and fine with an intensely mineral finish. Beautiful balance. Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Cherbaudes Drink: 2015-2022 Price: £618 per 12 Lovely purity of fruit. Great depth and concentration on the palate. Precise, fresh fruit which is finely balanced on a ‘knife edge’ as Louis described it. A little more power than the Champonnets.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard Père et Fils, Vosne-Romanée This year we were welcomed by Sylvain Cathiard’s son Se-bastien who took over the vinification from the 2011 vin-tage. Sebastien has worked alongside his father for the past decade as well as spending time in New Zealand at Fromm. He is now back and determined to retain the Cathi-ard style but will undoubtedly have his own unique ap-proach which only time will reveal. For us the 2011s were just as exciting as the 2010s. There is real artistry and mag-ic to these wines! Quite exceptional—we just wish we could obtain more… Bourgogne Rouge Price: £TBC This comes from a plot of vines below Clos de Vougeot by the road. Deep, rich and velvety with ripe black fruits. Far too good to be labelled Bourgogne Rouge! Drink: 2014-2017 Chambolle Musigny, Clos de l’Orme Price: £TBC Stunning this year. The vines are over 50 years old and the con-centration of colour and silky cherry fruit was exemplary. Very voluptuous. Drink: 2014-2019 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Thorey Price: £TBC From 59 year old vines on the north side of the village near Chai-gnots. Very elegant Nuits which will open up beautifully in a few years’ time. Drink: 2015-2022

Call 01275 434980 www.dbmwines.co.uk 11

Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers Price: £TBC 69 year old vines from a very stony vineyard. A strong wine with a solid core of black cherry fruits and well-coated tannins. Understated and regal. Drink: 2015-2023 Vosne Romanée Price: £TBC A blend of four different parcels. So refined! Mouthwatering red and black fruits with a long, layered finish. Drink: 2014-2020 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Reignots Price: £TBC This plot is right above La Romanée. Beautiful transparent colour and fragrant red fruits with a serious structure behind and a rich, concen-trated flavour. Impressive length. Drink: 2015-2023 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru En Orveaux Price: £TBC Deeper colour, wonderful, opulent fruit on the nose opening onto a gorgeous palate which is so powerful yet silky. Very expressive and mouthwatering. Wonderful wine. Drink: 2015-2025 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Suchots Price: £TBC A little shy on the nose today but opens out to silky, juicy berry fruits. Dances on the palate in such a delicate, balanced, graceful way. Drink: 2015-2023 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts Price: £TBC A fabulous aroma—it doesn’t get much better than this! So moreish on the palate, I would rather have a glass of this than an entire meal. Ex-pansive, beautiful, long, superb finish. Drink: 2015-2030

Romanée St Vivant Grand Cru Price: £TBC

Very closed on the nose which nevertheless hints at greatness. Super creamy texture and incredible concentration which builds and builds. Like nectar. Amazing potential, density and richness. Drink: 2015-2030

Drink: 2014-2016 Vosne-Romanée Price: £349 per 12 Deeper, rich berry fruit with more velvet on the palate. Closed but very fine tannins and a chalky mineral finish. Cool, pure and crystal-line. Drink: 2014-2018 Chambolle Musigny, La Combe d’Orvaux Price: £219 per 6 This has more weight than the Vosne. The fruit is on the red spec-trum and one has a sense that this has been picked early rather than late to keep it intensely fresh. Very long fine flavours. Drink: 2015-2019 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots Price: £435 per 6 Deep velvety colour with a spicy note. Lovely fine strawberry com-plex flavours. Silky, long, delicate yet intense with a mocha creami-ness that persists. Structured, needs time. Drink: 2015-2025 Echézeaux Grand Cru Price: £696 per 6 Very closed with an extra dimension to the complexity and concen-tration. There is a real nugget of savoury red fruit which builds beau-tifully. Mouthwatering. Voluptuous and energetic. Drink: 2015-2025 Richebourg Grand Cru Price on application Powerful, brooding wine. Wonderful, velvety, complex perfume of warm spices. So refined. Really long and fine. Gorgeous finish. Deli-cious! Drink: 2015-2025

Domaine Jean Grivot, Vosne-Romanée Etienne is one of the most considered winemakers we meet on our visits. He has been seeking ever-finer tannins and a silkier edge in recent years and one can witness this in the development of the wines which always retain an ability to age gracefully. This is a premier division producer whose quality remains of the highest order. His winemaking philosophy is to pick early rather than late to retain freshness.

Domaine Michel Gros, Vosne-Romanée Over the course of successive visits we are now becoming familiar with the

style of the house. These are deeply coloured wines with multi-layered fruit.

Robust, almost sinewy tannins which will need time to soften. Chambolle Musigny Drink: 2014-2019 Price: £177 per 6 From four different parcels, the largest of which is next to Musigny. Lovely velvety perfumed nose. Creamy black fruits with lots of rich-ness and density. Excellent Chambolle villages. Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées Drink: 2018-2025 Price: £300 per 6 Beautiful colour, jewel-like. Lovely, creamy, juicy fruit with elegance and depth. Complex, dark and seductive. Very fine tannins.

Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Clos des Réas Drink: 2016-2026 Price: £348 per 6 More closed but very refined fruit with exotic ripeness. Lots of lovely precise, fresh fruit with a luscious silky texture. Long and very impres-sive. Opulent. This single walled parcel is protected from the north and east winds and the fruit always has three days advance on other plots. This extra level of ripeness gives it its sweeter, riper fruit and majestic character.

Domaine Joseph Voillot, Volnay It was all go when we arrived here on a Monday morning in November. Barrels were being cleaned, wine was being racked and the cellar was very crowded! It was good of M. Charlot to welcome us at such a busy time. As you can see from the photo, he is a big man yet makes fragrant, gentle wines. There is a purity and precision to the fruit here that never fails to impress. Bourgogne Rouge Drink: 2014-2015 Price: £138 per 12 Great colour. Lovely clean, pure fruit expression. Very satisfying. Good flavour. Elegant with a silky structure. Volnay Drink: 2014-2017 Price: £127.50 per 6 Pretty nose with hints of mocha chocolate, well balanced and easy to like. Nice texture and good tannins. Domaine Buisson-Charles, Meursault What a warm welcome we had from Patrick and Catherine Essa. It is such a pleasure to do business with such nice people. The wines are so gentle and drinkable, yet deceptive in that they age very well too. We were treated to a 1980 Meursault Charmes which was deep in colour yet so fresh and long on the palate—to prove that even in a lesser vintage these wines can age beauti-fully. Meursault, Tesson Drink: 2014-2016 Price: £198 per 6 Patrick says you can keep Tesson 25 years, it is that good! Whilst we might be more con-servative on our drinking dates we do agree that this villages wine is more akin to 1er Cru in quality. Every vintage it offers richer weight and lovely texture and therefore offers good value for money. Meursault 1er Cru Bouches Chères Drink: 2014-2018 Price: £237 per 6 Wonderful texture and perfume. Very delicate fruit which builds well. So drinkable. Decep-tively gentle and graceful. Meursault 1er Cru Gouttes d’Or Drink: 2015-2019 Price: £240 per 6

The vines are 47 years old and this 1er Cru has the greatest potential of all in the cellar. Steely power yet gentle on the palate. Intense white blossom, real concen-tration here and a step up from the other 1er Crus. Very long finish.

Domaine Hubert Lamy, St Aubin Olivier Lamy’s wines have a crystalline quality that really makes them stand apart. A better expression of the 2011 vintage

would be hard to find. The impeccable winemaking and perfect balance of ripe acidity means these wines age very well. The

domaine’s particularity is the high density at which they plant, including two plots of 30,000 vines per hectare, three times

more than normal.

Bourgogne Blanc, Les Chataigners Price: £135 per 12 Very clean, mineral fruit. A little shy with acidity to the fore ini-tially but then creamy fruit rolling in on the palate. Good length for this quality level. Drink: 2013-2015 St Aubin, La Princée Price: £168 per 12 Peaches and white flowers with a hint of grapefruit. Honeysuck-le, mineral, oak-tinged finish. Drink: 2013-2015 St Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Price: £219 per 12 Quite closed today with citrus notes. Nice texture. Mouthwater-ing delicacy. Drink: 2013-2017 St Aubin 1er Cru En Remilly Price: £270 per 12 Hints of melted butter on a really mouthwatering palate which Olivier says shows salinité. Lovely intensity and lots of depth. Sustained finish. Drink: 2013-2018 Chassagne Montrachet La Goujonne Rouge Price: £198 per 12 Difficult to judge as an addition of sulphur had been added just that day which really ruins tasting for a while. Looks to have fragrant, pretty red fruits. Drink: 2013-2016

Fernand et Laurent Pillot, Chassagne Montrachet Laurent Pillot loves his vineyards and his wines—this is plain to see. It was interesting to hear how ten years ago he spent more time in the winery and less in the vineyard, whereas now it is the reverse. The secret is to get the best possible fruit and the wine then makes itself with much less intervention. We love these wines, they are great examples yet thankfully not on the radar of the press yet, so prices remain very reasonable. Puligny Montrachet, Les Noyers Brets Drink: 2013-2015 Price: £249 per 12 Melons, pears and white blossom on the bouquet. Lovely verve and energy on the palate with a rounded, weighty texture. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Champs Gains Drink: 2013-2016 Price: £279 per 12 White flowers and acacia with a citrus note. More closed but richness comes through on the palate which is broad and creamy. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Vide Bourse Drink: 2014-2016 Price: £345 per 12 Lovely ripe, honeyed character with a hint of crème anglaise and ripe apple. Needs time to settle but has great potential. Very long. Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Ruchottes Drink: 2013-2016 Price: £360 per 12 Quite closed on the nose but super-concentrated with outstanding richness and depth. Long and powerful with a mineral intensity.

Domaine Jacqueson, Rully Marie and her father Paul had to be very brave this vintage. Having lost 90% of their production to hail they were facing the prospect of chopping up expensive barrels for firewood, but they formed a new plan to buy grapes from Mâcon which they vinified themselves in order to have some wine for their many clients both in France and abroad. The Rully whites will not be offered en primeur this year because of this, but we do urge you to purchase some of the Bourgogne Chardonnay, details of which you will find below. Bourgogne Chardonnay “Cuvée Sélection” Drink: 2013-2014 Price: £120 per 12 A blend of three parcels sourced from a grower in

Mâcon Pierreclos but declassified as Bourgogne which the Jacqueson’s personally selected and visited several times before harvest and then vinified in oak themselves. This doesn’t have the concentration of their Rully wines but it does display the charm and elegance of their winemaking style.
