Katharine Newman- Ms. Newman has been performingextensively in the southeast both as a recitalist and orchestralharpist for many years and is currently Principal Harpist for theHuntsville Symphony. Recently she was featured soloist in aperformance of Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp.
She also plays regularly with the Alabama Symphony inBirmingham including their performances at the KennedyCenter. For years Ms. Newman was Principal Harpist for theMobile Opera Orchestra and she has developed an extensiveteaching studio in northern Alabama.
Ms. Newman divides her time between her southeast activitiesand performances in the Washington metropolitan area. Forexample, she performs with the St. Mary's Orchestra in theirsummer series and the Alexandria Symphony on manyoccasions.
Ms. Newman earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees inharp at Auburn University. Additionally, she is currentlyteaching several courses in Music Appreciation at a local college.
New JSU Student Chapter of theAmerican Choral Directors Association
Today's food drive to benefit the Food Ministry of the Church ofSt. Michael and All Angels is sponsored by the newly formedJSU chapter of the American Choral Directors Association. Thisis one of three food drives that the chapter will sponsor at choralconcerts this fall.
ACDA is a national organization whose mission is to inspireexcellence in choral music through education, performance,composition, and advocacy. There are student ACDA chapters atcolleges and universities all over the United States. The JSUchapter will join other Alabama chapters at Huntingdon College,Samford University, The University of Alabama, TroyUniversity, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, theUniversity of Alabama-Birmingham and the University of NorthAlabama.
JSU Director of Choral Activities, Dr. Patricia Corbin, who alsoserves on the Alabama ACDA board as College & UniversityRepertoire and Standards Chair, is responsible for starting thischapter and is its adviser. "ACDA has fabulous conventionsevery year and I haven't missed one since 1995," says Dr.Corbin. "They are life changing events for those of us who arepassionate about choral music," she continues, "I wanted tohave some of my JSU students share in this experience."
In addition to sponsoring the fall food drives, the chapter is raisingmoney to attend the ACDA National Convention that will be heldin Dallas, Texas, March 13-17, 2013.
If you are interested in donating money to help the chapter attendthe Dallas convention, a donation box will be available in thelobby after the concert. Please make checks payable to "JSUFoundation/Choirs."
