Dear Friends, Colleagues and Families!
In the name of Sandra and the agency I would like to give you our most
heartfelt welcome. We are overwhelmed to see that so many of you have decided to
join us tonight. Exactly one year ago, at this fair, many of you have seen Ute for the
last time, and we understand this gathering to be your and our way to pay our last
respect to her.
But Ute would not want us to hang our heads. To the contrary, she would want
us to celebrate, namely the 25th anniversary of her and our agency - the agency that was
her lifework, her pride, and her legacy.
We will do just that and are grateful and happy to share this important moment
with you.

Lisbon
I was working at the agency only for two months when Ute took me with her to
a business trip to Lisbon.
I was totally new in the branch, did not know anybody, nor our books and even
less the way to sell them. That trip was indeed very special for me: Every day, after all
the visits to our publishers, we went out and searched a place to have dinner. Ute asked
for ‘only one course’ as she always used to, and white wine, and when she finished with
the wine, the good part of it all started.
During those evenings she explained to me very intimate parts of her life: on
how she survived, as a small girl and by miracle, the bombing of her house during the
war; on her new family after that; on her experience as an au-pair in England; on her
arrival in Spain and the cultural chock it meant for her; on her professional beginnings
when she answered an ad in the newspaper asking for a bilingual secretary and landed
at International Editors, which is where it all began… This and much more she told
me, even though I hardly knew her. But this is how Ute was, if she trusted someone,
she didn’t hesitate to open her heart.
Ute always treated me like a daughter, with all the pros and cons that go with it:
she protected me and at times she overprotected me. She was tender to me, and
sometimes with an overload of kisses and hugs. She cared about me and my life,
sometimes with too much worry. But those are exactly the things that I now miss the
most, and my fondest memories of her.
Ute was just like we all knew her: she was full of energy and vital; apparently
disperse but actually efficient and very well organized in her way; generous and with a
great capacity to delegate.
9
If she hadn’t been like that, the agency would not exist like it does, and we
wouldn’t be celebrating our 25th anniversary today.
And it also wouldn’t exist like it does, if it hadn’t been for Guenny and his
adventurous decision to emigrate and live in Barcelona.
The two of them were a curious blending: they were like day and night, almost
polar opposites, but basic things united them: certain values, a way to understand our
profession, and a way to understand and treat people.
In the end and despite of their differences, they were always able to find a
compromise where others would have parted.
It has now been ten years since I first joined the agency. Like the others, I came
across the agency by coincidence, with little professional experience and without
knowledge about the functions of an agent.
Ute and Guenny have been exceptional masters; they taught me everything there
was to learn and let me be part of whatever was happening.
Though they were demanding at times, they also allowed me my own space and
gave me the opportunity to fulfil myself and grow professionally and as a person. But
the most important thing of all was that they believed in me, from the very beginning.
I can truly say that the three of us had a great time during these last ten years.
Now that I am looking back the one thing I seem to have more clear and present is that
we laughed a lot – more than a lot. As our dear friend Trini from Bruño once said, we
were a ‘gang’, just like the three musketeers had been.
Now we are only two, not three. We are missing a sword, but are trying to keep
on laughing just as we did before, and when we do, Ute is more present than ever
despite of her physical absence.
10
I said before that this agency wouldn’t exist without Guenny. And without him I
wouldn’t be at the agency anymore, nor would I be the person I am today. Guenny is
the organizer, the one who is always on the lookout for the best and most original
ideas, the one who pushed Ute to imply necessary changes.
To me, Guenny is more than just a colleague, associate and master. He is one of
the most coherent and authentic persons I know. He is my friend, one of the few
persons I have absolute trust in, and the only one that makes me feel like everything is
possible in this world. And that’s quite a lot.
Guenny and myself, together with the help of Raquel, Rosa, Lea, Cristina, Anja,
Íñigo and Carla are now the team of the agency. We look forward to another 25 years
(or more!) full of learning opportunities, books, inspiring authors, fascinating people
and, most of all, laughter and joy in our life and work.
Thank you very much for being here today and sharing this very special moment
with us.
Thank you, Guenny. Thank you, Ute.

Mi querida Alice
When Sandra and Guenny asked me to talk about Ute Körner, the woman and
the agent and agency, I felt honored.
Ute Körner was a woman and is still an agency that from the very beginning I
trusted. Among them I feel at home, and this is something wonderful to say about a
woman and an agency and a group of people.
Some weeks ago I was physically at the agency talking to Sandra and Lea and the
atmosphere was so relaxed. I was feeling that Ute could appear at any time. There is a
wonderful picture (black and white) of Ute in the corridor once you enter the agency,
and Sandra has got another one on her desk of Ute and Guenny and her. Ute’s person
and spirit is always there.
Today is the 25th anniversary of the agency and one year that Ute left, we all
miss her, but she is among us through the agency and through Sandra, Guenny and our
memories.
I met Ute 5 years ago. At that time I felt madly in love with a picture book that
Gaia Stock of Edizioni EL was presenting, Alice nelle figure, a wonderful book based on
Gianni Rodari’s text and with illustrations from Ana Laura Cantone. Wonderful! If you
haven’t seen it you should all ask Gaia or Sandra for this book.
Oh well, all of you who know me you know how passionate I can get about
books I love and believe at. Ute was representing this book in Spanish and Catalan and
I wrote her this long passionate e-mail about why i should be the editor of this title
(there were other Spanish publishers wanting it). And to my surprise I immediately
afterwards received an equally long and passionate mail from her and afterwards a
13
phone call: she wanted to meet me in person. From that day on she always called me
“mi querida Alice” – “my dear Alice”. We collaborated in many other books, but for her I
was forever on “MI QUERIDA ALICE”.
I miss Ute, I miss that powerful woman who used to hug and kiss me a lot. She
was powerful, passionate, great person to talk about literature and everything and
anything, great grandmother, she was so proud of her grandchildren, I miss her
showing me pictures of her grandchildren. I miss her and the long mails and
conversations we exchanged. And I am sure you all here have the same feeling. Her
death, as death often does, surprised us all, and left us with a void. Myself I still hear
that voice calling me “mi querida Alice”.
But often I can share all this with Sandra and Guenny, and I am sure you all do
the same. With Sandra we have become good friends over the years, she is one of the
most wonderful and calm woman I have ever met. And Guenny is this big and cheerful
man who often makes me laugh and who is a great person to talk to. With Sandra and
Guenny we share great books, great conversations and an alternative way of
understanding the editorial business and life.
My biggest feeling when I am with Sandra, Guenny and all the people who
conform the Ute Körner Agency is that I am with some friends from another country.
For some reason when I have lunch with them in Barcelona I feel we could be in Berlin
or London with some university friends.
I don’t want to talk much longer. Just to finish I would only like to explain you
how two Bologna’s ago I discovered from Sandra and Guenny that every year they have
an ILSA dinner (ILSA standing for International League of Subversive Agents), a
tradition that Ute and some other agents started many years ago. Then I understood
everything: subversive is the word. They are subversive and they are good people and
great agents. They are my friends.
14
I wish them all the best for the next 25 years and I am sure Ute from wherever
she is she oversees them all.
Thank you Ute, I will always remain your “querida Alice”.
Thank you, Sandra and Guenny.
And thank you to all of you!

Rumours
Many were the suspicions, rumours and whispers about my relationship with
Ute, a relationship that began towards the end of the year nineteen hundred eight-six in
an attic at Ronda Guinardó in Barcelona.
A mysterious union was formed in this attic, or so it seemed to many who were
puzzled to see the elegant, cultivated and at times glamorous Ute in company of this
strange, unknown immigrant, who didn’t even speak a word of Spanish, let alone
Catalan.
Some of you in this room took part in the speculations at the time, and you will
well remember that the most common label we were given was the one of “Ute and her
new lover”.
Or, as Traudel Eckhard from Heyne once put it, “Die Körner und ihr
Schmusi”.
Some, like Brigitte Hugendubel, thought we were married and would never fail
to pass their regards “to your Spouse”, while others, like Cristobal Zaragoza, thought I
was her son and were surprised to see I had already grown so much.
To us these speculations and the inability of the people to look beyond the
obvious always have been nothing less than hilarious. And those who knew Ute well
and got to know me better soon realized that the rumours could not be true.
And yet, besides or maybe even because of our obvious differences there was a
kind of blind understanding between us. From the very first moment on Ute trusted in
me with a confidence that can only be called unlimited.
17
To know whom to trust and whom not was one of her greatest gifts. It is no
understatement to say she had a sixth sense that only very rarely failed. And once she
had decided to trust someone there was no turning point, no holding back, she would
take you to her heart.
Yes, she had a great heart. It is paradox that in the end it was this very same
great heart that failed her.
To those of you who will insist in categorizing my relationship with Ute, let me
tell you that maybe the one term that best describes our connection is that of a sister
and a brother.
Especially in the beginning Ute was my big sister, and I was the little brother.
As it is with siblings, over time I matured and the distinction between “older” and
“younger” became less pronounced, at times even to the point that our roles reversed.
Sister and Brother, with all its implications. Of course we as well had quarrels,
but we always knew – and never doubted – that we are made for each other until the
end of our days.
Ute grew up in the gloomy atmosphere of post-war Germany. At the
beginning of the 1960’s she had but one desire: escape her oppressive catholic
environment and become a flight attendant at Lufthansa, a profession that at the time
was considered synonymous to freedom and independence.
It is absurd to think that with this background she wound up in Spain, of all
countries. A land that, oppressed by Franco’s dictatorship, was anything but free.
But it was also the land where she met her love to José Moya, where she started
her family, and where she found her vocation as a literary agent, three things that would
lay the foundation for her lasting bond to Spain.
18
On the other hand this meant for her to not live first hand, with her own body
and soul, the emancipatory movements that took over Europe in the late 1960s.
Imagine Ute had she studied in Paris, in Berlin, in Bologna or Berkeley! With
her boundless love for freedom and her deep sense for justice I am certain we would
have seen her on the barricades, too, and more than once!
I myself was already a child of these social upheavals, and to have me close to
her, to have me tell and show her about these times, about our actions and experiences,
about what made us - to a certain point - free, enabled her to relive these times with
me.
There were only a few things Ute was not capable of, for example to think
analytically or even dialectically. But that’s what she had me for.
But what I learned from her in return was what spontaneity, frankness, positive
chaos and, most of all, generosity and tolerance can achieve, though rest assured I have
made a conscious effort to maintain my ironic and cynical attitude towards life.
Today we do not only want to remember our good friend Ute, being the
character and person that she was, but we also want to celebrate the 25th anniversary of
our agency.
Ute founded this agency in nineteen hundred eight-four with nothing more than
a few pieces of furniture she could spare or brought along from the publisher Bruguera
and cramped in a flat of 30 square meters, but she could count on her decade-long
experience and an extraordinary sense for books , authors and publishers. Her ability
to tell good people from bad people have made this project a success.
She was also a true master in inspiring people, and she has done so with many
during her long and intense professional life.
19
From a personal perspective this is the one thing I most hope to carry on with
in the agency. But, not least because of the presence of my wonderful colleague and
friend Sandra, there is little doubt we will not succeed.
Sandra, this for once provides me with an opportunity to thank you. Thank you
for by now ten years of working side by side, a time span that has allowed us to sell
many good books (and, to be honest, also a few bad ones). It is a great privilege to
have you as a partner.
I would also like to extend my thanks to our wonderful team and their great
dedication to our common project.
Thank you to Raquel, Rosa and Lea who are with us tonight, and thank you to
those who are holding the fort at home: Cristina, Anja, Íñigo and Carla.
All of this wouldn’t make much sense without our authors and their works, our
clients, publishers and agencies, in short, all those who have entrusted us with their
treasures. Not to forget the many publishers in Spain, Portugal, Brazil and the rest of
the world, who, after all, are supposed to buy our books.
We would like to thank all of them for their long lasting confidence and loyalty,
and especially for their strong support, their solidarity and their care for us during this
tough last year which is now coming to an end.
And there is somebody else who should be mentioned here, somebody who at
first sight doesn’t have anything to do with all of this, but on second sight all the more:
my partner Hartmut, who back in nineteen hundred eighty-five took on the challenge
‘Barcelona’ with me, and who has since had to put up with my engagement to the firm.
Thank you for all these years of empathy, friendship, and, most of all, your love.
20
I did not have to think long about the most adequate way to pay my last
respects to Ute this evening, as the most adequate farewell can only be one: to sing a
song for her.
Those who knew Ute well will already know that I can only be referring to one
song.
A song that many associate with her, one that so many of her old friends heard
her sing at the piano bar in Bologna, a song that – of course! – was also sung for her on
her surprise birthday party when she turned 65.
A song that curiously enough was also the favourite one of my father, and in
this sense it is a thank you to him as well.
He was a bookseller with all his body and soul and it was from him that I picked
up the basics of my present day job from an early age on.
Now then, in the tradition of countless already existing interpretations by Lale
Andersen, Marlene Dietrich, Frank Sinatra and many more, you will now hear an
intonation by me that may fail in musicality, but is all the more heartfelt (or so I hope).
Accompanied by Maestro Nikolai Argakow here is, for Ute and for you, the
song “Lili Marlen”.

Queridos amigos, colegas y familias,

venir a vivir a Barcelona.

Conocí a Ute hace cinco años.
día ella empezó a llamarme “mi querida Alice”.
que he conocido nunca.
Gracias Ute, siempre seré tu “Querida Alice”.
Gracias Sandra, gracias Guenny.
Y gracias a todos vosotros.

Rumores
acaban comprando nuestros libros.
mi último homenaje a Ute.

Liebe Freunde, liebe Kollegen, liebe Familien!
diesem wichtigen Abend Eure Gesellschaft schenkt.

Lissabon
landete, wo dann alles begann....
schien sie zerstreut, aber in Wirklichkeit effizient und auf ihre Weise bestens organisiert;

vom ersten Anfang an Vertrauen hatte.
50

Rätselhaft erschien es manchen, was diesen hergelaufenen Arbeitsemigranten
