Denver’s mountain historian Louisa Arps has supplied many items of interest for this book, including theĨŽůůŽǁ ŝŶŐŝŶĨŽƌŵĂƟŽŶŽŶWŝŬĞƐWĞĂŬ
The mountain was the first 14,000-foot mountain in the United States to be climbed. &ŽƵƌƚĞĞŶLJĞĂƌƐďĞĨŽƌĞŝŶϭϴϬϲ ƚŚĞŵĂŶĨŽƌǁ ŚŽŵWŝŬĞƐWĞĂŬǁ ĂƐŶĂŵĞĚ ĞďƵůŽŶD ŽŶƚŐŽŵĞƌLJWŝŬĞůĞŌhis main party in a breastwork built of 14 logs on the present site of Pueblo, and, with three companions, setout to “ascend the north fork (Fountain Creek) to the high point of the blue mountain, which we conceivedǁ ŽƵůĚďĞŽŶĞĚĂLJƐŵĂƌĐŚ ŝŶŽƌĚĞƌƚŽůĂLJĚŽǁ ŶƚŚĞǀ ĂƌŝŽƵƐďƌĂŶĐŚĞƐĂŶĚƉŽƐŝƟŽŶƐŽĨƚŚĞĐŽƵŶƚƌLJ >ĞŐĞŶĚƐŚĂǀ ĞŐƌŽǁ ŶƵƉĂƌŽƵŶĚƚŚŝƐĂƩ ĞŵƉƚ—one that Pike actually climbed Cheyenne Mountain; another that hesaid Pikes Peak would never be climbed.
Mountaineering scholars now think hecame up South Turkey Creek and climbedone Blue Mountain or another of thesummits southwest of CheyenneD ŽƵŶƚĂŝŶ ƚĂƌƟŶŐǁ ŝƚŚĂŶĞŶƚƌLJŽĨE ŽͲvember 24, 1806, his account reads thus:
We marched at one o’clock with an ideaof arriving at the foot of the mountain;but found ourselves obliged to take up ournights lodging under a single cedar, whichwe found in the prairie, without water andextremely cold...Distance, 12 miles.

Ute Pass Historical Society volunteer, Marilyn Trantham Blackwell, will begin teaching Beginning Genealogyclasses on April 25 and 28th in the second floor boardroom of the Woodland Park Rampart District Library.
