www.TravelDynamicsInternational.com 800-257-5767Dear Vanderbilt Alumni and Friends,

We are pleased to partner with ravel Dynamics

International, one o our longest-established and mosthighly-respected tour operators, in bringing you an

opportunity to explore parts o Arica that ew are

    privileged to see.

Te voyages described in this brochure are to an

undiscovered Arica, an Arica o souks and bazaars,

o vanished empires and colonial plantations, o pristine

tropical islands, lush rain orests, and immense, starkly

beautiul deserts. And since this is Arica, there is

wildliean astonishingly rich variety o wildlie. All o

this, and much more, you will nd along the shores o

    West Arica.

Its ironic that West Arica, once busy with the ships o

explorers, colonists, traders, and missionaries, is rarely

visited by contemporary travelers. With these voyages

that encompass the continents entire coast between the

Strait o Gibraltar and the Cape o Good Hope in South

Arica, we hope to change that.

In act, traveling by ship is the only way such unique

journeys are possible, as air and land connectionsbetween North Arica and South Arica are logistically

complex and time-consuming. Aboard ship, you unpack

once and travel in perect comort.

One o our goals is to introduce you to the many

    dierent Aricas: the noble Imperial cities o Morocco;

    the handsome colonial monuments o Luanda, Angola;

the lush orests and wildlie sanctuaries o Te Gambia,

Sierra Leone, and Ghana; the idyllic islands o So om

and Prncipe; the world-class wineries o South Arica.

Tese voyages give you rare opportunities to get to know

the people o Arica. Well meet local artists and artisans

shermen and armers, wildlie park rangers, and the sta

o the acugama chimpanzee rescue program. o deepen

your understanding o contemporary Arica, we will also

    arrange discussions with local leaders.

aricaLike you, we are aware o the demands group travel can

make on local environments. Tat is why we travel onlyon a small ship with a limited number o participants.

raveling small enables us to visit sites that would

be out o bounds to the thousands o passengers rom

massive cruise ships. When we visit a traditional village,

a wildlie park, or a cultural monument, we do not

overwhelm it, and we are careul to minimize as much as

possible our impact on the site.

Our ship, the Corinthian, is ideal or this unprecedented

voyage. With only 50 spacious suites, many with a

private balcony, elegant common areas, superb acilities,

expansive promenade decks, and almost as many crew

members as guests, Corinthian adds immeasurably to the

success o the discovery o West Arica.

We hope you will join ellow Vanderbilt Alumni and

travelers rom other distinguished colleges, universities andmuseums on this once-in-a-lietime adventure, choosing

the date that best suits your personal schedule. We look

orward to welcoming you to this extraordinary voyage.

Please call us at 615-322-3673 or urther inormation and

to reserve your suite aboard the elegant Corinthian. With

ree airare rom New York and limited accommodations,

this trip is certain to sell out quickly.

experience a newworld in west aricaMany Americans are amiliar with the savannahs and

the wildlie o East Arica. West Arica, however,

is virtually unknown to even the most experienced

travelers. Yet the natural history o West Arica is

more diverse, oten more lush, and in many ways as

exciting as that o East Arica.

For example, along the coastlands o Morocco youll

nd ourishing vineyards and olive and orange groves,

while the country s North Sahara region is a vast,

dramatic desert. And towering over all are the serrated

peaks o the Atlas and Ri mountains.

Te low-lying regions o Te Gambia are mainly

woodlands and wetlandsideal habitats or birds suchas storks, egrets, and crested cranes, as well as primates

such as baboons and western red colobus monkeys.

Te islands o So om and Prncipe are an unspoiled

tropical paradise, a place so rarely visited by travelers

that you may have one o the islands pristine,

    palm-ringed beaches all to yoursel.

Te Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world,

ormed about 80 million years ago. Yet there is a

strange beauty to this stark landscape o sand, stone,

and mountain peaks. And it is ull o lieincluding

    oryxes, ostriches, and black-backed jackals.

Every day on this voyage will bring a new discovery.

the culture ofwest aric aarbeyond the ordinaryIt would be the work o a lietime to catalog the

cultures o West Arica: the indigenous and the

colonial, the ancient and the modern, the religious and

    the secular.

On Lake ogo youll travel rom village to village by

piroguestill the primary orm o transportation

along the lakevisiting shermen and armers who

have embraced some aspects o modern lie, but still

practice the traditions o their ancestors.

Te plantations o So om, the distinctive French

architecture o Porto-Novo in Benin, the castles along

Ghanas Gold Coast, the churches and ortresses o

Angola, recall the days when much o West Aricawas in the hands o European nations. Even today,

many West Aricans can speak French or English or

Portuguese in addition to their native language.

We have selected our destinations careully so you can

observe the real lie o the people o West Aricain

their villages, their markets, and their workplaces.

responsible travelWe treasure the places we visit and respect the people

and wildlie who live there. We are committed to

in the wake ofthe explorersOur voyage ollows the route o the rst European

explorers. In search o a sea route to India, Portuguese

navigators ollowed the coastline o West Arica, each

one going a bit arther, until in 1498 Vasco da Gama

successully rounded the Cape o Good Hope and

    came ashore in India.

Among the other explorers well learn o along the

way are Mungo Park (1771-1806), a Scots surgeon

who charted the Niger River; Mary Kingsley(1862-1900), who led expeditions

to West Arica and was the rst

    European to explore the remote
