Luke 10:25-37 Jesus responds to the lawyer’s question with a parable that illustrates how keeping the law isn’t a matter of focusing on details regarding right or wrong or personal gain, but is a matter of right of right relationships with one’s neighbor as exhibited by acting with compassion and mercy. The Samaritan in the parable isn’t moved to help the stricken traveler because of the law but because he was a person of compassion and mercy. This is the law written within our hearts—not details about keeping specific laws but a general regard for the other that arises out of genuine care for the other.

Cub Scout Pack290 would like to extend its gratitude to the Parishioners and the Scout Families of St Pius X! We are proud to announce that we have collected 70 pounds, approximately 105,000 aluminum can tabs to be donated to the Shriners. A special Thank You also goes out to Mrs. Oxley and her four boys for cleaning, weighing and delivering the tabs to the Shriners in Concord. Because of your support, a few families will be provided free transportation to the Shriners Hospital in Boston. Together we have cleaned a small section of our environment and at the same time we have helped a worthy cause.

Thank You All Very Much!

Dear Father, Is Hell “merely” the absence of God? Or is it a place of torment and flames? How do Catholics imagine Hell? Can only Christians get to Heaven? Dear Inquisitive, The most basic concept of Heaven and Hell is anchored in the belief in the existence of God. For a human being who understands that life is a gift of God, regardless of what one calls God, one can only want to be reunited with the God who gave them life. God calls his human creation into a fuller relationship with Him. After all, if He is the source of all life, then God has all that we would need. From this realization comes the realities of Heaven and Hell. Realizing that the God who gives life is the source of ultimate Love, and being made to be in relationship with Him, we long to complete that relationship. Our union with God can only be complete in death as we are called back to Him. Heaven is therefore complete and perfect union with the God who gives us life. So Hell would be the complete and absolute absence of the presence of God for one who acknowledges their depend-ence upon Him. That is why it is often said that Hell is an ultimate void from Love. As to whether Hell is a place of flames and torment, one can say, again, based of the belief in God, that to be without the presence of God would be the greatest of torment, which could be felt like flames burning our hearts from within. As we recognize God in our lives and God being manifest in others through the love we share with one another, when we grief the loss of a loved one we experience void and pain, sometimes in a profound way; the absence of a deceased loved one can give us a glimpse into the ultimately greater absence of all source of Love. This would be an absolute torment. Catholics have based their imagination of Hell through the de-scriptions found in the Scriptures (the Bible,) from the time of the Old Testament Hell has often been explained as a place of torment and flames and thus art depiction, which often shape our imagination, have depicted Hell as a place surrounded with flames and pains. Individuals portrayed in Hell often show their pains through their facial expressions. Catholics do not believe that only Christians or Catholics get to Heaven. We believe that salvation, eternity in Heaven, is solely the free gift of God to His human creatures, only for God to give out. No Human being, or institution, can assume to know how God will give out His free gift. We do have His Word to guide us and teach us, but God is above our interpretations and ultimately God’s Word came in the flesh in the person of Jesus Christ, not for the few but for all, whether they know Him intimately or not at all.
