The increase on mechanical properties of different graphite
dispersions in aluminum- based composites was studied. Al
composites with metal-coated graphite (MCG) were prepared by
mechanical milling route. Selected MCG couples were C–Cu, C–Ni and
C–Ag while uncoated graphite was used as reference. As-milled
products were consolidated by uniaxial cold compression followed by
pressure-less sintering, hardness and compression tests were
carried out on a longitudinal direction. Experimental values showed
a significant increment on yield strength and hardness values in
synthesized composites with respect to the blank (pure milledAl)
processed under same conditions. Metal type and its concentration
have an important effect on mechanical properties of prepared
composites.
Aluminum-based nanocomposites were produced using multiwalled
carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersion by mechanical milling (MM)
followed by sintering and hot extrusion. MWCNTs showed stability
after MM and thermo-mechanical processes. Excellent adhesion of
nanotubes to Al-matrix was observed. Formation of an amorphous
interface between nanotubes and aluminum matrix in nanocomposites
was observed by TEM. This amorphous layer is probably responsible
of the excellent adhesion of MWCNTs to the aluminum matrix.

Composites of 7075 aluminum alloy (Al7075) with carbon-coated
silver nanoparticles (Ag-C NP) were prepared by the mechanical
milling process. It had been found thatAg- C NP have an effect in
refining the powder and in the crystal size. MgZn2 phase presents
in annealed samples was dissolved by milling process. The Vickers
microhardness (HVN) values are higher at higher Ag-C NP contents.
It has been found that a saturation point exists where
microhardness does not present variation.

We report the fabrication of submicron, multi-nano-layered,
yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin films by aerosol assisted
CVD. The film consisted of a periodic stack of several layers, a
few nanometers thick, of the same composition but different
density; formation of voids during synthesis originate the
low-density layer. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD),
X-ray reflectometry, high-resolution transmission electron
microscopy (HRTEM) and high angle annular dark field (HAADF) images
were employed to analyze the microstructure of the films. GIXRD
pattern showed characteristic peaks of cubic zirconia. Peak
broadening in the pattern comes from a microstructure composed of
nanocrystals, but principally due to the multilayered structure,
that cause satellite peaks around the Bragg reflections. Lattice
fringes measurement in HRTEM and HAADF images was consistent with
the interplanar distance of the YSZ cubic phase. Additionally,
lattice parameter obtained from selected area electron diffraction
and GIXRD patterns was around 0.513 nm, in agreement to values
reported in the literature for YSZ.

Brass coatings were deposited by electroless process on zamak-5
alloy substrates with various degrees of polishing and different
concentrations of chelating agent in the chemical baths, in which
the Cu complexing agent was varied in a wide range of compositions.
The effect of Rochelle salt content as well as the substrate
roughness on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the
prepared coatings was addressed. A two layer structure is formed
during the deposition process having stoichiometric composition
corresponding to CuZn and Cu5Zn8 for the top and bottom layer,
respectively, and also CuZn5 was detected. The CuZn stoichiometric
top layer showed invariably higher hardness. Polishing of the
substrate leads to coatings with coarse- grained microstructure and
higher surface hardness. It is found that both the chelating agent
and the substrate roughness influence the microstructure and
mechanical properties of the coatings, and higher chelating agent
concentrations and smoother substrates produce higher densities and
therefore better mechanical properties.
The effect of boron additions on the densification of a ferritic
stainless steel during sintering was studied. Experimental results
showed that density and microstructure changed with the boron
content. Boron promotes the formation of a liquid phase, which
resulted from a eutectic reaction involving iron and chromium. The
presence of the liquid phase modified the microstructure
morphology, shape of porosity, density and hardness.

The H2S corrosion inhibition of ultra high strength steel with
carboxyethyl-imidazoline has been evaluated with electrochemical
techniques. Tested material included a water quenched Fe–C–Mn steel
micro alloyed with Si, Nb, Cr, and Ti, equivalent to anAPI X-120
pipeline steel, whereas electrochemical techniques included
polarization curves, linear polarization resistance,
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and electrochemical noise
measurements. Tested solutions included H2S-containing 3% NaCl with
and without 10 vol% of diesel and different inhibitor
concentrations (0, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 ppm) at 50°C. Different
techniques have shown that the optimum carboxyethyl- imidazoline
efficiency was obtained with 50 ppm, but the efficiency decreases
as time elapsed. Corrosion rates obtained with diesel were lower
than those obtained without diesel.
The low-stress three body abrasion behaviour of arrange of steels
was investigated. The tests were carried out in a rubber wheel
tester (according toASTM G65-94, reapproved in 2000) at room
temperature. The abrasive part
S. For the austenitic and ferritic steels the subsurface
deformation was larger for impact with the coarser particles.
Variations in substrate hardness had no effect on the abrasive
behaviour observed. On the whole, the hardest steel (mild steel in
martensitic condition) showed the higher extent of damage,
irrespective of particle size.
icles used were angular alumina particles of four different sizes.
The results showed that, in general, the smaller particles (50 and
125μm average size) caused more damage. With these particles,
observations of surface morphology indicated a more intense cutting
and ploughing action, leading to more damage, whereas bigger
particles i.e. larger 250 and 560μm particles produced less damage,
and their action involved more plastic deformation type wear. The

The precise ab initio calculations of the tetramer Mg_{4}were
performed at the all- electron CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ level. The
dissociation energy in respect to all possible dissociation
channels at different levels of accuracy, from SCF till CCSD(T),
but with the same large basis set, was calculated.Except the SCF
method, in all approximations Mg_{4} was found stable. The
many-body decomposition of the interaction energy was performed.
From it follows that the three-body forces are not only a single
factor of stabilization, but the dominant factor of the many-body
expansion. The three-body interactions favor the promotion of the
3s-valence electrons to the 3p orbitals with the subsequent
sphybridization.

The geometric parameters characterization and ground state energies
of (ZnO)6 nanoclusters were calculated using Density Functional
Theory (DFT) with B3LYP and LanL2DZ basis set. Excited state
energies, as well as absorption wavelength, were computed using
Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) for both
nanostructures in its pristine form and also for variants of these
nanoclusters with sulfur applied as substitutional impurity at
different locations within the structure. For the emission
wavelength, the excited state geometry optimization was carried out
with Hartree–Fock Configuration Interaction Singles (HF/CIS). Our
theoretical results are new data related to the geometry as well as
to the spectral absorption/emission properties of these novel
nanostructures. These cluster variants present characteristics
interesting for solar cells and optical applications that will be
useful for future theoretical/experimental developments.

In this work, we make use of a model chemistry within Density
Functional Theory (DFT) recently presented, which is called M05-2X,
to calculate the molecular structure of the flavonoid Rutin, as
well as to predict the infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV-Vis)
spectra, the dipole moment and polarizability, the free energy of
solvation in different solvents as an indication of solubility, the
HOMO and LUMO orbitals, and the chemical reactivity parameters that
arise from Conceptual DFT. The calculated values are compared with
the available experimental data for this molecule as a means of
validation of the used model chemistry.

A procedure to develop a true geometric finite element (FE) model
of a Berkovich indenter using fused silica as a reference material
is proposed. 2D and 3D models of the indenter tip were evaluated
based on the delimiting factors such as the indenter true geometry,
elastic modulus, yield stress and hardening modulus, and compared
with the experimental results. The true geometry of the Berkovich
indenter paying special attention to the tip end was determined by
a non-linear regression of the indentation data at small
indentation depths using the equation of a sphere, and by image
analysis of AFM micrographs. The tip bluntness was described with a
so-called rounding radius and incorporated into the 3D FE model,
which was in fact the most important parameter considered for a
better representation of the load–displacement curves obtained
experimentally. The advantages of using 3D models instead of 2D
models are described and discussed here. Finally, different methods
were used to determine the yield stress of fused silica, including
the analysis of the load–penetration data transformed to
'stress–strain' indentation curve as well as by the analysis of the
von Mises equivalent stress distribution obtained with the 3D FE
models. The results show that the yield stress of fused silica is
4.5–4.6 GPa.

MCM-41 have been used to custom synthesize catalysts in because of
the controllable properties, such as pore size, active phase
incorporation, crystal size, and morphology, among others. In this
paper, a simple and versatile method for the incorporation of
platinum, ruthenium, and palladium onto Al-MCM-41 mesoporous silica
by direct inclusion of various precursors was studied. M/Al-MCM-41
structure, textural properties, morphology, and elemental
composition were analyzed. The results obtained indicate that the
Al-MCM-41 mesoporous-ordered structure was not affected by metallic
particle incorporation. Highsurface areas were obtained (1131m2/g).
Metallic nanoparticles dispersion on Al-MCM-41 was homogeneous for
all samples and its particles sizes were between 6 nm to 20 nm.
Microscopy results show round shape particles in platinum and
palladium samples; however, ruthenium catalysts exhibit a spherical
and rod shapes. Electrochemical testing for Pt/Al-MCM-41 showed
electrocatalytic activity for H2 oxidation which indicates that
these materials can be used as a catalyst in electrochemical
devices.
Aluminum nanocomposite was obtained through mechanical alloying
process using elemental powders of aluminum, copper and magnesium
of high purity with the aim to obtain the 2024 aluminum alloy
composition. Elemental powders and reinforcement particles were
milled in a simoloyer mill for different times from 1 to 5 h. X-Ray
Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) results
indicated that even for milling time of 5 h some elemental copper
remained in the microstructure and has not been incorporated
completely in solid solution into the aluminum lattice.
Furthermore, it was not observed formation of any second phase,
however when the specimens were subjected to Differential Thermal
Analysis (DTA), it was observed in the microstructure the presence
of Al2Cu, Al4C3 and some oxide of the type CuO and CuO2. It was
also demonstrated that average crystallite size of milled powders
was refined to nanometric level while microhardness values were
arising continuously with the milling time and were a maximum in
the 2 mass% graphite specimen.
