    INTRODUCTIO Designed by architect Charles Correa for the

    government of Madhya Pradesh. It was commissioned in 1980 but did not beginconstruction till 1983, and was ultimately completedin 1993 Charles Correa's Assembly complex is anamalgam of elements from history intricately woven

    together in the heat and light of India. It is a deepunderstanding of vedic principles

    CONTEXTThe site chosen for the building isindeed a monumental one.

    It is in the centre of the capitalcomplex, at the highest point on

    Arera hill, overlooking the city of Bhopal.

    .It is obvious that the shape of the buildingneeds to reflect this unique location, with a formthat is "readable" from many different vantagepoints.Such clarity is difficult to achieve on this site

    with square or rectangular forms since theangle of the main access road is not constant,but swings considerably in relation to thebuilding , thus was gradually developed thecircular form .

    THE CONC The majestic work combines a modernsensibility with themes derived from

    traditional architecture in harmoniumway. The tradition and mythologicalbeliefs of the country is conceived in thedesign in the form of Navgraha mandal,the Hindu pattern of nine squares withina square which describes the universeand nine planets.

    The basic concept lies in the depiction of whole M.P. state within one building which ishighest political representation of M.P. hencerepresents by Navgraha mandal.

    . The form of the biggest assembly chamber (the Vidhan Sabha) was from the greatBuddhist stupa at Sanchi. The plan is aseries of garden within gardens, with theadministrative offices defining a pattern of

    nine compartments.

    FORMThe Vidhan Bhavan is a huge building, covering an

    area of more than 32,000 sq. meters of built space.In point of fact viewed from any point of the compassthe Vidhan Bhavan impresses by its light footednessand effervescenceIn a total break from modernism and post-modernism, Charles Correa has developed a deepunderstanding of the Vedic principles of architecture,from which has emerged an extra ordinary synthesisof the totally traditional with the totally modern

    BUILDING

    The five central ones are the halls andcourtyards while the four corner position are

    occupied by specialized function- the VidhanSabha , the Vidhan Parishad, central library ,combined hall.

    It also contain a host of other facilities :offices, cabinet room, cafeterias , common

    room for security staff, etc.

    ENTRANCES

    There are 3 mainentrance: for thepublic, for the VIPsand for the MLAs.

    The whole building presents as extremelypleasing vision of powerful curves and

    straights, vertical and horizontal lines.

    The wholecomposition isenclosed by a wallthat defines its

    exterior form like acircular inner city, thisapproach hasgenerated aninteresting roof capeand skylines.

    TREATMENT

    The use of Burma colide material was taken intoconsideration , but it was not proved to b a better treatment, so it was replaced by the K9 and K13

    cellulose fiber coating - which was done by directlyhitting on the ceiling of the dome through the good ,in the Vidhan Shabha

    6 thick cushion carpets were laid in the halls of Vidhan Sabha, rajya sabha, and the auditorioum ,below which were the sheets of jute , to treat thefloors acoustically

    The capacity of hall is 231.it is circular in plan, has 15.5 mts. radiuscovered by hemispherical dome of dia.31.00mtsand thickness varies from 150 to 90mm the

    Access to the hall is provided through thegrand entrance resembling to Sanchi gate.It is painted very colorfully representingthe presence of lord Ganpati at entrance .There was a different access n exit for the

    speaker and the officersK-13 cellulose fiber coating in 40 mm

    (UPPER HOUSE)

    There is also a provision for Vidhan Parishad hallbut now its being used as a conference hall. It

    houses about 75 members.

    Its roof has been designed as an inclined spacetruss covered with 150 mm thick R.C.C. slab.The slab was supported with the I- sections , on

    the top of which , the concreting was done.

    COMBINED H

    For the joint session of Vidhan Sabha andVidhan Parishad, there is provision for

    common hall, presently using as aauditorium. Its roof has been designed asa warped slab (hyperbola cum parabolaslab)2mt. Thick beam is used, running with thewaves of the ceiling .The auditorioum has 4 main entrance with

    COURTYARFor century, courtyard has always been one of themost successful ways of dealing with the hot dryclimate. The courtyards also have marvelous

    architectural and human attributes.Keeping this in mind a series of courtyards havebeen symmetrically placed along the main axis.The courtyards themselves differ in the treatmentand atmosphere, so there is a sense of clear procession through the building

    . One comes in through the entrance

    courtyard, under a large pergola really anopen-to-sky public forum.From here one proceeds to the central

    courtyard that is covered, and lit by adomed skylight. The other three courtyards are partially

    covered and partially open-to-sky indifferent ways. Thus, as one progressesthrough the building, there are subtlechanges in character and ambiance.

    The Kund area however, is a place for slow progression, for contemplation of

    the sky above, a place to sit and restwhilst admiring the magnificent tribalwall paintings of Late Shri Jangad

    Singh Shyam.
