March 18, 2018 Lent 5WELCOME TO WORSHIPWe’re happy you’re here to worship with us! We pray that the Lord bless you through his Word this morning. Here are some notes about our service:

Restrooms – The restrooms are located out the back doors and down the second hallway to the right.

Parents, we are so glad that you have brought your little children to church this morning. If needed, there is a nursery out the back doors to the right.

We recognize that our new sanctuary is a little “echo-y” and apologize for any sound difficulties. We are working to remedy the problem.

COMMON SERVICE

Our worship follows an order (liturgy) that centers our attention on listening to God’s Word, recounting what he has done for us, and praising his name. This basic order has been the foundation of worship for centuries in the Church and connects us to something much bigger than ourselves.

1

Understanding the Church Year - LentThe word “Lent” comes from an Old English word for spring (“lengthen,” the time of the year when the days grow longer). For the last 1700 years, the Church has set aside the 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Easter as a time for repentance and prayer. During Lent we solemnly remember our Lord’s suffering and death, but it is not without hope. For we know that Jesus suffered and died and then rose victoriously on Easter morning. So while our rejoicing during Lent is muted and quiet (we omit “alleulias” and the “Gloria”), we live in the hope of Easter

CONFESSION OF SINSP: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our

sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.

C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and

2

actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.

P: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C: Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

P: The Lord be with you.C: And also with you.

P: Merciful God, we are bewildered by the chaos of our world. We sometimes wonder where you are, and how you could allow so much pain and sorrow. Draw near us, Lord, and grant us a sense of your steadfast love. Restore us through your grace. We bring our anxieties to you, and trust in your Holy Spirit’s guidance.

C: Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE FIRST LESSON Jeremiah 31:31-34 Israel and Judah threw away everything that God blessed them with. In response, God didn’t abandon them, rather he established a new covenant! That covenant would be established by Christ as he hid his glory while on earth, all so that our wickedness would be forgiven.

31 “The days are coming,” declares the Lord,4

“when I will make a new covenantwith the people of Israel and with the people of Judah.32 It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestorswhen I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them,”declares the Lord.33 “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the

Lord.“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts.I will be their God, and they will be my people.34 No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the

Lord,’because they will all know me, from the least of them to the

greatest,”declares the Lord.“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

THE EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 5:7-9Christ’s glory was hidden behind a veil of suffering and humiliation which he endured for us. It remained hidden until it burst forth unhindered that first Easter morning, assuring us of our salvation!

7 During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. 8

Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9

5

and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

THE NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made,of one being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.6

For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the

Scriptures. He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY My Song Is Love Unknown | 110 (v. 1-4,7)

THE SERMON TEXT John 12:20-3320 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.23 Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a

7

kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.27 “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28

Father, glorify your name!”

Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

30 Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” 33 He said this to show the kind of death he was going to

die.

After the sermon, the congregation sings:

OFFERING“Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” - 2 Corinthians 9:7

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH

LORD’S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses,

9

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

THE SACRAMENTP: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.P: Lift up your hearts.C: We lift them up to the Lord.P: Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God.C: It is right to give him thanks and praise.P: It is truly good and right that we should at all times and in all places

give you thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who brought the gift of salvation to all people by his death on the tree of the cross, so that the devil, who overcame us by a tree would in turn by a tree be overcome. Therefore, with all the saints on earth and hosts of heaven, we praise your holy name and join their glorious song:

10

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

THE WORDS OF INSTITUTIONP: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and

when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”Then he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

11

P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.C: Amen.

This hymn reminds us that the power of the Sacrament is not in “our eating and drinking…but in the words ‘Given’ and ‘poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins.’” This hymn underscores the powerful and creative Word of our Savior at work in Holy Communion.
