    VILAS SCIENCE

Has Spring Sprung?! Earlier in the year, the 6th gradecompleted a geology unit and then we movedfrom the strata of the earth outward to our solar

system and beyond. It is now time for life! The6th grade is learning about the six characteristicsof all living things, which are: cells, organization, response to stimuli, reproduction, growth and development, and energy usage. Aspart of our learning of these, we will focus onthe many responses living things have toenvironmental changes in the spring, such as theamount of sunlight. Basically, students will lookfor clues that spring has sprung and at the same

time observe one of the characteristics that allorganisms share.

    The Big Hatch

! The 225 brook trout eggs that we placedin our tank have begun to hatch. The next stageof development, during which they are known asalevins, lasts 4 to 6 weeks. During this time theywill gain their nutrients from their yoke sac. Atthe fry stage the brook trout will be stocked inthe Cold River, but not before our 7th gradersmap the Cold River, study the habitat needs ofBrook Trout, identify the macroinvertebratesfound in the river, and analyze the water quality.
