City of the Dead

Do you love to discover new places but find guided tours a bit of a bore? Maybe you’d prefer something moreweird, wild and wickedly funny? Then, Edinburgh’s famous City of the Dead tour is for you! In the heart ofScotland’s beautiful capital city this is sightseeing with a difference. On this tour, you’ll be thrilled and chilledby scary stories, fascinating history and dark humour, all in the good company of a friendly guide … andpossibly a ghost or two!The first stop on the tour is Edinburgh’s legendary underground city. Underneath today’s streets is a forgottenland of tunnels and chambers where an entire population once lived in misery. You won’t believe people couldhave lived down there! It’s pitch black, damp and airless. During the eighteenth century, the smallunderground rooms were used for all sorts of illegal and evil activities. Some say the dark tunnels are hauntedby the ghosts of people murdered there! If you survive the first part of the walk, your next stop is Greyfriars Cemetery. This graveyard is famous for themysterious supernatural activity that goes on around one grave in particular. This special burial site is said tobe occupied by a ghost known as ‘The Mackenzie Poltergeist’. People report sightings of a white figure anddead animals, and experience unexplained smells and strange sounds. Since 1999, there have been 450documented ‘attacks’ by the ghost. As they walked around the graveyard, people have felt something pulltheir hair, grab their arms or hit them gently on the back!Visitors come away from this tour with unforgettable memories and, sometimes, an unusual souvenir; manyhave gone home with a mysterious cut, bruise or burn! Though nothing dangerous has ever happened, thiswalk is not for the fainthearted. You will experience fear and fun in equal measure! It is recommended thatyou book this tour in advance because it is very popular. Tours leave from Edinburgh Castle every evening at 8 pm. More information about special discounts, group bookings and gift vouchers is available on the website. So, sign up … if you dare!

Keeping a dog can discourage burglars fromentering your home. When a thief sees a barkinganimal in the garden, he will be afraid of beingdiscovered, as the noise will alert others to thefact that something is wrong. Even if you don’tfancy the responsibility that goes with keeping adog, you can always place a ‘Beware of Dog’ signon your garden gate. It usually makes a thief thinktwice about breaking in.

4 Przeczytaj tekst o zabezpieczeniudomu. Dobierz właściwy nagłówek (A–F) do każdej z oznaczonych części tekstu (1–4).Dwa nagłówki zostały podane dodatkowo i nie pasują do żadnej części tekstu.

A Make an arrangement with someoneB Keep things neat and tidyC Remember to lock upD Don’t leave things on displayE Avoid costly possessionsF Practise a little deception

HOME SECURITYIt’s not just locks and alarm systems that protect your

home. Consider these other useful tips.

Leaving valuable items lying around will onlytempt thieves to break into your house. If you have anexpensive laptop in full view on a desk by a window, either rearrange the furniture or close the curtains. Thesame thing is true for outside your home. For instance,a brand new racing bike in the garden suggests youhave other expensive goodies inside. Keep it out ofsight in a shed or garage, or store it in the hallway ofyour house.

The time most break-ins occur is during the daywhen people are out at work. You can leave thetelevision on or music playing to make thieves thinkthere is someone at home. Leaving a light switched onis another way to fool them, but can run up yourelectricity bill if you’re not careful. To avoid thishappening, why not arrange to have energy-efficientbulbs installed? They last longer, saving you money andhelping the environment at the same time.

Afraid of forgetting your keys and gettinglocked out? Don’t keep a spare set under the doormator in a flowerpot. This is a dangerous practice becausesomeone could very well see you getting your sparekey out of its hiding place. That would be like an openinvitation for them to let themselves in later. If youmust have a back-up set of keys, it’s better to leavethem with a trustworthy neighbour.

Looking after your garden can help you keepyour home safe. Shrubs and trees that have becomeovergrown can provide welcome hiding places forburglars. They can sit outside unseen waiting for theright moment to break into your house. You don’t haveto cut down everything in your garden! Just make suretall branches are cut back so they don’t cover upperstorey windows. This will make it much more difficultfor thieves to attempt a break-in.

Something fishy is going on ...

We’ve all heard of the phrase ‘it’s raining cats anddogs’, but what about ‘it’s raining fish and frogs’?

People in countries as far apart as Englandand India have reported seeing creatures such asfish, frogs and other pond life falling from cloudshigh in the sky. Scientists claim that these incidents are most likelycaused by a tornado. It is thought that the suddenchange in air pressure can cause fish and othercreatures to be sucked up into the atmosphere. Thetornado can move so quickly that the fish oftenland very much alive and sometimes hundreds ofmiles away from where they started out.The fish were collected by the town’s 650 residentsput into buckets of water in the hope of revivingthem. The stunned creatures had been almostfrozen during their journey through such highaltitudes. It seems unlikely that tornadoes can cause the skyto rain golf balls, sugar lumps and even meat, although all these have been reported. Butfor now, perhaps having an umbrella in the rain iseven more important than we first thought!

Save the beesSince the 1990s, bee populations across Europe

have suffered a serious decline. Environmentalists arevery worried about the survival of bee species. Thereare a number of reasons thought to be the cause oftheir decline, including climate change, disease andhabitat loss. However, the main reason is pesticides.Pesticides are chemicals used in commercial agricultureto kill the pests that damage crops. These chemicals aresprayed in large amounts throughout the countryside.Sadly, some pesticides are poisonous to bees.

Bees play an essential role in our foodproduction. Not only do bees make honey but, moreimportantly, they pollinate the plants that we eat. When a bee lands on the flower of a plant, pollensticks to its body. The bee then flies to another plantwhere the pollen rubs off and onto a different flower. As a result, the plant reproduces. In Europe, over 4000kinds of vegetables grow this way and a third of allthe food we eat depends on this process happening. Itwould cost us an estimated €265 billion every year ifwe didn’t have bees.

Fortunately, there are ways to help. Firstly, wecan spread the word about what’s happening. It’simportant that people are aware of howenvironmental issues affect the world. There are manyorganisations, such as Greenpeace, who are workingto save the bees and who welcome support from thepublic. Also, we could buy organic fruit and vegetablesthat are free of pesticides, or we can even becomebee-keepers ourselves! Just planting some wildflowers in your garden will make a small but valuabledifference. Let’s be kind to nature’s tiny workers! Afterall, they put food on our tables.

The Disappointed Banjo Player

George started playing his banjo, but Harris objected; he said he had got a headache, and did not feel strongenough to stand it. George thought the music might do him good – said music often soothed the nerves andtook away a headache; and he twanged two or three notes, just to show Harris what it was like.Harris said he would rather have the headache.George has never learned to play the banjo to this day. He tried on two or three evenings, while we were upthe river, to get a little practice, but it was never a success. Montmorency would sit and howl steadily, rightthrough the performance. “What’s he want to howl like that for when I’m playing?” George would shout angrily, while taking aim athim with a boot.“What do you want to play like that for when he is howling?” Harris would answer back, catching the boot.“You leave him alone. He can’t help howling. He’s got a musical ear, and your playing MAKES him howl.”So George decided to wait until he returned home to study the banjo. Unfortunately, the lady upstairs was ina very delicate state, and the doctor was afraid it might injure her.George tried practising round the square. But the people who lived there complained to the police about it;they set a trap for him one night, and he was captured. He was sentenced to keep the peace for six months. He seemed to lose heart after that. He did make one or two feeble attempts to take it up again when the sixmonths had passed, but there was always the same coldness – the same lack of sympathy from the world ingeneral and, after a while, he gave up entirely, and made the great sacrifice of advertising the instrument forsale – “owner having no further use for item” – and took to learning card tricks instead. It must be disheartening work learning a musical instrument. You would think that Society, for its own sake, would do all it could to help a man in the art of playing a musical instrument. But it doesn’t!

WILD PLACESDallol, Ethiopia

You’ve probably heard of hot places like California and New Delhibut have you ever heard of Dallol in Ethiopia? Here the averageyearly temperature is 34 degrees and the thermometer can reachup to 63°C in the burning sun. Dallol is located in a desert areacalled the Danakil Depression. Although it is in the middle of thedesert, Dallol is not full of sand. There are many red and greenacid lakes, yellow sulphur fields, and numerous white salt beds. How is this possible? The sulphur, salt and other naturaldeposits found here give the place its magnificent colours. Due to its location, Dallol is also hard to reach by car. Theydo this in order to collect table salt. They cut out blocks of saltfrom the ground and load the salt onto their animals. It is thentransported to the markets of Ethiopia for sale.In spite of the unbearable temperatures, Dallol was onceinhabited. Up until the 1970s, workers lived there in order toextract a mineral called potash from the ground. They built sheltersout of blocks of salt. However, the living conditions for theworkers were extremely harsh. In the end, all of them leftand the only things that were left behind were abandoned carsand dwellings.Today, an increasing number of tourists visit this hot andcolourful land. They take groups there to observe the hotsprings as well as the active Erta Ale volcano which shoots hotlava into the air. Despite advising their travel groups about theweather conditions, many tourists are shocked by the heat andthe volcanic tremors felt along the way. Even so, most will agreethat a journey to Dallol is an amazing adventure!

When I visited my cousins in Queensland, Iexpected a relaxing beach holiday. I had seenplenty of pictures of Mission Beach, the townwhere my dad grew up and where my cousinsnow live, but I was surprised by what I found. There were rainforests, nature reserves andwhite sandy beaches. Shortly into my trip, wewent snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef. The colours of the coral and marine life werebeyond anything I had ever seen before. Overthe next week, we travelled to manydifferent places. And before I left, we wentsnorkelling again in the reef. I just had to seethat magical underwater world once more.

My best friend and I go on long holidaysevery summer and usually enjoy spending ourtime relaxing at the beach. But last summerwas so much better than we had expected. After much discussion, we opted for a last-minute holiday to the island of Zakynthos inGreece. Our days were spent exploring theisland and visiting all of its resorts andbeaches. I even found a restaurant thatshared my name! We went there every nightfor dinner and made friends with the staff. We were there for over a month and I waseven offered a job working in a little café. Itwas the most amazing holiday I’ve ever had.It was as if I had lived there all my life. I wassad to leave, but I certainly will be returningto the island for another visit.

B

A large group of us booked a holiday tocelebrate the end of exams. We were soexcited and couldn’t wait to have a goodtime with lots of other young people inMalaga, Spain. However, we soon discoveredthat the hotel was a little further away fromthe nightclubs than we had thought andnone of the guests were young people likeus. One night the hotel owner offered us alift to a club but he decided to take themountain roads to show us the rural scenery. It was a nice surprise but it took over an hourto get there! We still had a great holiday butI would definitely choose somewhere closerto the nightlife the second time around.
