AmazingDiscoveries
My
Dear Diary:I’ve been making the most amazing discoveries, and decided I had to start keeping track.
This must be documented.
How can I explain what’s come over me? After only a few days of spending some free time in Downtown Langley, wandering through every shop, store and lane, I realized I was a stranger in my own town. I had no idea these shops with incredible products and services existed so close to home! And the people who work here–it’s beyond my imagination! How can so many people be so helpful and friendly? I wouldn’t think of myself as someone who keeps a journal of personal thoughts, and yet…I’m compelled to put it all down in writing and pictures. Oh, and Diary, forgive me for taping pictures here and there–sometimes words just can’t describe the delicious, colourful and amazing stuff I found.
Maggie S.
15While the shopping is fabulous, Diary, there are also some cool events I want to remember. I’m going to mark those with special tags so I don’t miss out on them.

Saucy, innocent, sexy... and I couldn’t believe I found gorgeous pregnancy lingerie! I missed out on
this when I was pregnant!!
I looked up “femme fatale” and the definition is a mysterious, seductive, dangerous and deadly woman... yeah, that’s totally me. Like last weekend, when the gals and I were planning a night out. Or when Jamie was planning her anniversary dinner with Grant. It turns out that everything we needed to get ready was right here in Downtown Langley–head-to-toe!

There is more than one place to spend a day of pampering with the girls. I didn’t even realize it!
A wash and blow dry is now on my agenda when I’m putting together a night out with the gals. But next
time I’ll throw in a quick trim and highlights.
step one
Where are we going—do we need bridal glam, or party glam?
step TWo
Get the core pampering—toes, face and fingernails—and then see who wants to go for a massage.
step ThRee
Shop for the right outfit. Note: Check out the store directory at www.downtownlangley.com with the girls.
step foUR
Figure out the perfect hairstyle. Up-do, side-sweep or down-and-sexy? The stylist I talked to had really great ideas!
step fiVe
Lunch with the girls. Make it light bistro fare so there’s room for a bigger meal in the evening.
Next gal’s night game plan
My best friend and I found a pretty amazing selection of bridal gowns. And how cool that the ladies in the store totally got her style. Sure wish I had found this store when I was
shopping for my wedding gown!

Fashionista
I can’t decide what style my clothing and home decorating tastes are drifting to. I’m so pumped that there are so many stores that cater to everything I want, and I want it all!
Picked up a bow tie for Mr. S. that he’s always wanted–he’ll die when he sees some of the very cool clothes for guys
when we go back next week.
Bizarre but awesome shoes–I love them!

skinny Jeans:
These have been in style for decades, they were just called different things: stovepipes, pencil pants, cigarette pants, or skinnies. I need a pair of these.
Giant Bags:
I’m glad to see these bags are in fashion. My life is too big for a small bag. I saw a few different styles around town, but I still can’t decide if I like the messenger satchel or a simple over-the-shoulder slouch bag.
Retro furniture:
I’m in love! Old furniture has a quality and craftsmanship that can’t be matched, and I saw both truly vintage pieces as well as newer versions that had the same look and feel.
Reclaimed fun:
Mr. S. would love to get his hands on some of the vintage toys for his man cave.
My classic list
There are some real gems at the vintage stores in town.
I found eclectic and classic furniture at a few places. Like this piece that totally works in my bedroom. The gal who helped me had some fantastic tips for using chalk paint to reinvent my old furniture.
Gotta tell Mr. S. about the jewellery I found–who doesn’t love bling?

Outstanding cupcake flavours and treats that kids love!
It was nice not to have to stroll too far to find a park to relax with my iced Americano. It was cute watching the little kids play while their moms and dads took a break. I love that my kids are teens, but I miss those toddler years. Sigh.
Pottery and painting classes for all ages–fun!
When nobody was looking, I went down the slide. Tip: Make sure
it’s dry at the bottom.
FARMERS’ MARKET

Fresh-baked mouth-watering artisan breads. Sometimes carbs are okay, right?
Carla gave me this recipe for chicken pie and I got every ingredient at the local Farmers’ Market.

Sweet Georgia Brown, there is NOTHING like homemade jams on warm bread for a Sunday morning treat! The kids will love
the Gooseberry spread.
I love a sunny afternoon wandering stalls of fresh vegetables and fruits, listening to local buskers, and feeling good about buying fresh and local.
Hand-crafted pastas are amazing–they almost look too good to eat!
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C)
• In a saucepan, combine chicken, carrots, peas, and celery.
Add water to cover and boil for 15 minutes. Remove from
heat, drain and set aside.
• In the saucepan over medium heat, cook onions in butter
until soft and translucent. Stir in flour, salt, pepper,
and celery seed. Add chicken broth and milk. Simmer
over medium-low heat until thick. Remove from heat
and set aside.
• Place the chicken mixture in bottom pie crust. Pour liquid
mixture over. Cover with top crust, seal edges, and cut
away excess dough. Make several small slits in the top
to allow steam to escape.
• Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown
and filling is bubbly. Cool for 10 minutes—serve.

Elegant dining too!
Downtown Langley is like the United Nations of food. I saw French bistro style, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Greek, Mexican... I’ll have to go back, I can’t remember them all.

My family loves fresh seafood–so delish and healthy. My favourite has always been lobster!
“Umai” is Japanese for very tasty, and I think I said it a million times. There are so many choices for Japanese food in Downtown Langley–unbelievable!

10 Cool Things to do when you’re
Downtown
I experienced the most amazing customer service in the one-of-a-kind shops and was given the coolest recycled gift bag! Officially my “grab first” bag from now on.
I ate, and ate (and ate!). Downtown Langley has cuisine from all over the world! And I topped it off by indulging in the perfect sweet.
While walking around, I discovered the public library. Not just books, but music and movies too! Why didn’t I get a library card before this?
There are so many events to experience over the summer months! Food, art, classic cars and festivals that even my kids will want to go to (with ME). Did I mention they’re all FREE?
Who knew there was a water park in Douglas Park, literally a one-minute walk from Downtown? I confess that I dunked my feet and splashed around just a little.
Imagine my surprise when I came across the most peaceful water fountain at Innes Corners. What a perfect spot to relax right in the Downtown.
I l-o-v-e Farmers’ Markets and Langley City has one of the best I’ve ever come across! Fresh everything and the nicest vendors ever!
The Spirit Square in Douglas Park is a genuine jewel! One sunny afternoon I came across a live Shakespeare performance and sat with the nicest couple (who offered me a corner of their blanket!). #AwesomeLangleyPeople
Imagine this—I’m strolling along and I see a sign. Turns out there are 15 of these signs, and they tell the story of the Downtown heritage buildings. I had my own, personal treasure hunt that day.
A little bird told me that there are five wooden statues located throughout the Downtown. I found them all! Next time I’m challenging Mr. S. to find them just before he buys me lunch!

120 artists and artisans and 20,000 people enjoying everything art has to offer—amazing! Jewellery, pottery, paintings, sculptures, photography and every other art you could imagine—can’t wait! www.artsalivefestival.com
My favourite kind of event! Excited to find the bargains at the sidewalk sale and then sit and enjoy my iced coffee and watch the outdoor fashion show in McBurney Plaza. Heaven... www.downtownlangley.com
This sounds awesome. Delicious and different kinds of food! The culinary stage demos sound outstanding and I will even enter the cupcake eating contest! And who can resist pancakes for breakfast? Yum! www.downtownlangley.com
I heard that the City of Langley loves their community so much that the 10 am parade isn’t enough. They follow it up with a Douglas Park celebration right afterwards. www.city.langley.bc.ca
Farm fresh and ready to go—seriously! These people know what they’re doing and it’s the best! Things for me, activities for my kids and I’ll even take Mr. S. for a piece of amazing fudge (his favourite). www.langleycommunityfarmersmarket.com
Mr. S. will love this one! 1,200 classic cars and 50,000 people walking around. It sounds like a true “car guy” event. I discovered that every penny raised goes to local charities. Hmm. Makes me like cars more. www.langleycruise-in.com
