This is the third time thetrophy has been exhibitedaround the world prior tothe tournament, with 88countries lined up duringthe 267-day duration.

The total distance coveredduring the tour will be149,576.78 km. In otherwords, more than threetimes the circumference ofthe earth!

Starting off at the worldfamous Rio de Janeiroicon the Christ theRedeemer statue on 12thSeptember the tour is dueto travel for nine monthsright up to the kick offof the tournament in Brazil.

The first time the Original FIFA WorldCup Trophy made an unprecedentedtour visiting 31 cities in 28 countriesover a three-month stretch was in 2006,from 7 January to 10 April, before theFIFA World Cup in Germany.

Second time out, the Tour visited 84countries and 130 cities all over theWorld, including 50 African nations, inorder to celebrate the first ever FIFAWorld Cup on African soil.

The Tour lasted from September 2009to May 2010, going from Ukraine toNew Zealand, passing by Kazakhstan,Greece and Venezuela, just to mentiona few of its many stops.

Night owls now have a new place to chill out and party the nightaway with the opening of The Roof, a fashionable new rooftoplounge and tapas bar on level 38 of Mode Sathorn Hotel.

Sophisticated contemporary sounds are promised with a bevy ofresident and guest DJs already recruited to keep the scene

evolving. Every weekend promises something new with differentthemes planned to keep the punters flocking back. Guests willhave the opportunity to witness headline acts from Europe, Asia,Australia and the USA.

Encircling the entire roof, the brick and stone tiled terrace tracks

NIGHTLIFE all the way round, offering stunning 360° views of iconiclandmarks and the city�s never-sleeping buzz. At variouspoints, comfy seating and convenient tables have beenplaced; these areas include an exclusive high table fordinner parties, and all have been arranged for intimateevenings at different deck levels, divided by shallowbaby-blue illuminated steps. The predominant shade ofthe lounge areas and furnishings is white, which becomesivory and cream in the ambient light emanating from low-set torch lamps.

The natural wood-topped stretch-bar area meanwhilecarves out a distinctly edgy space in electric blue,dramatically contrasting ripe-red filaments glowing likesci-fi light sabres, and the fruity mauve that adorns thehigh-rise building�s artistic exterior.


For more concentrated and intimate diningexperiences, a decadent library-salon style diningroom is offered one floor below, connected by adramatic red lacquered staircase. For parties of upto ten guests, a sumptuous setting is provided forentire evenings of celebration and merrimentensconced amidst the epitome of chic contemporarydesign.

As for the refreshments, drinks and light dishes areexpertly created by specialist bar staff andpassionately inventive chefs intent on ensuring thattheir inspirations are on par with the rarefied venue.

The barmen really come into their own mixingcocktails and mocktails. Signature drinks includeSky Sangria, Sex on the Roof, and Vanilla SourMartini.


Then there is the medley of margaritas, mohitos, daiquiris,martinis and Champagne Concoctions.

Hip contemporary options are summed up by the BubbleCocktails menu ranging from Pomegranate Mango Pop withfresh mango, pomegranate juice and sparkling wine to SangriaFlavours comprised of red and white wines, herbs and fruits.

There is also a full bar of spirits, liqueurs, wines and local andimported beers.

The temperature controlled wine cellar is well-stocked with newand old world vintages and champagnes.

Enhancing the drinks experience is a mouth-watering menu oftapas.

Mode Sathorn features two other outlets during their Nightlifepromotions, and guests are free to wander from one to another.

The Theatre Bar, on floor 10, features soft lighting, chair backswith moulded white faces and a wide window wall looking acrossto Surasak Skytrain station.

A row of 360° bubble TV/video screens suspended from theceiling, the first and only in Bangkok, provide a live-streamingassortment of intriguing clips.

Pool Bar, on the 11th floor, combines the natural allure of atropical garden with a dramatic expanse of infinity-edged waterinviting the eye to admire the uptown lights of Bangkok.

At the centre of all this is a sunken bar that keeps guestsrefreshed with a lengthy cocktail list and sumptuous eats.

Dutch Settlement by Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk

La Lanta Fine Art will soon be hosting the first solo exhibition in Thailand by surrealist Dutch artist Pepijn van den Nieuwendijk.

The Dutch Settlement exhibition showcases a series of guache (opaque watercolours mixed with a preparation of gum) on paperinspired by the historic events in the 17th Century when Dutch people emigrated from the Netherlands. Most of them were farmersand hardworking Christians. They were living their typical Dutch lives which they had lived for centuries in the Dutch countryside. Theytook the typical Dutch habits, morals and standards with them to Canada and the United States. Although they lived abroad, they keptholding on to their traditions very tightly.

The exhibition, which is visually inspired by Blue and White Delftware ceramics, will be on display from January 11th to February 13th.

Central World�s chic new dining hangout �Groove� officially opened on December 24th with a celebrity party featuring some ofBangkok�s top talent.

Ananda Everingham attended the event along with Nonthiwat Parabhanond, Chanavat Uahwatanasakul, Sansana Chirathivat and PatriPakdeebutr, amongst others.

Groove is billed as a world class hangout for fine dining, with a dozen or so top ranked establishments having rushed to book their spots.Already open are Wine I love You, HOBS (House of Beers) Playhouse and Italian restaurant Cicchetti.

Scheduled to open within the next two weeks is 1881 Bar and Restaurant, and this will be followed by El Gaucho, Fauchon, Maxim�s,Hyde and Seek, Harrods, Open Kitchen, Apinara and Greyhound.

The two level destination has over 12,000 square metres of space and allows natural light to permeate via a central walk-through, whilesheltering outside diners from the elements thanks to suitably sized overhangs.

Groove sits at the front of Central World, running alongside the Skytrain line and the overhead walkway to Siam.

CPN�s Wallaya Chirativat said that �the exclusive opening party is set to deliver a �wow� experience to citysumers and tourists fromaround the world. We would like them to be excited with the new hangout destination in Bangkok, which is comparable to those inother leading cities like New York, London, Hong Kong and Shanghai�.

�We invited Simone Legno, world renowned Italian artist, to exclusively create paintings as well as his three metre high masterpiece ofTokidori Karl Lagerfeld and six two metre high figures that we will exhibit inside Groove.�

�Groove is equipped with an automatic convertible roof, making it a truly Al Fresco dining space in central Bangkok.�

Australian Executive Chef Nathan Chilcott

If anybody could introduce Bangkok to the hidden wonders of Australiancuisine it would surely be Nathan Chilcott. In his position as executivechef at Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit, Nathan is responsible forculinary excellence at all of the hotel�s prestigious outlets, namely

57th Street, District, Octave and Chocolate Cake Company. Born andraised by two food loving parents in Australia, Nathan�s love of theculinary world came rather early in life. As a child, he rememberspottering around in the kitchen, always exploring ingredients and

taste combinations. �I feel like I always knew I was destined to becomea chef,� says Nathan.

Growing up, Nathan pursued his career working for a wide range ofprestigious hotels and restaurants in Austria, France, Portugal, China,and England.

During his time in London, Nathan worked at Gordon Ramsay�s famoustwo Michelin star restaurant Petrus, where he learnt that striving forperfection is the only approach to providing a guest with the ultimateculinary experience every single time.

After being contracted to introduce new menu ideas and planning,Nathan moved to Pangu, a 7-star hotel in Beijing, China � this waswhere he was exposed to the intricacies of Asian cuisine in depth.

During his time in Asia, �simple flavours, fire fast woks and spicycurries� quickly made Thai cuisine Nathan�s favourite.

Nathan then had the opportunity to become a private chef on severalluxury super yachts in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, where heinteracted with a top echelon of guests including the royal familiesof various countries.

Having committed most of his life to the realm of culinary arts,Nathan continues to perfect his passion. �I hope to provide everyguest at the Bangkok Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit with anexceptional and memorable dining experience.�

Nathan has now gone back to his roots to provide a glimpse of Australiancuisine in the hotel�s latest promotion: �Down Under�.

The one month festival will introduce diners to a unique cuisine that hasbeen influenced by early indigenous cravings, but which has now movedon to embrace a global appreciation of haute cuisine.

Among the very typical �Ozzy� items on offer will be �veggies� from theOutback, Ozzy Burgers and fresh seafood from the bountiful coastline.

The District was inspired by the meat packing district in New York, andbrings freshly grilled steaks and seafood to diners who appreciate theupmarket surroundings, romantic low lighting and relaxing, restrainedbackground music that The District provides.

The Asian elephant, a keystone species, is threatened with extinction, as deforestation has destroyed much of its habitat, food supplyand migration routes. Large populations of wild Asian elephants are surviving along the border between Thailand and Myanmar, whichis a high priority area for the conservation of Asian elephants.

Their living space is degrading, causing more and more human-elephant conflicts. Bio diversity and wild elephant populations aredeclining. If action is not taken to conserve and expand the forest now, Thailand can lose its wild elephants forever.

Bring the Elephant Home works to give Thai elephants a chance to survive, by creating a more suitable habitat, mitigating human-elephant conflicts and empowering local communities and education. To support their conservation projects in Western Thailand, theyhave organised their annual charity event Bike for Elephants: Two days of adventurous and fun biking along the River Kwai, throughthe mountains, forest and countryside of Kanchanaburi province.

During the event participants will visit the Erawan Elephants Paradise to spend some time with free roaming elephants and eachparticipant will plant some trees for wild elephants.

The fee of 8,500 baht pp includes a mountain bike, helmet, water bottle, safety and support team, a Bike for Elephants t-shirt, anovernight stay at a resort, all meals and drinks and a donation to support wild elephant conservation work.

Jazz aficionados can catch French songstress and sax player Aude Lhotelais at two venues next week. Aude will perform at CentaraHua Hin on 12th January before travelling to Bangkok to perform at Dream Hotel on the 17th.

The Bangkok performance has been billed as Alluring Night with A Touch of Bossa � Jazz � Sax by Aude Lhotelais, and will take placeat the rooftop poolside bar Flava Lite.
