SCORE SHEET

At times we have all the ideas in our head, but when we put the pen to paper, it doesn’t sound all that great! Of course, a good piece of writing comes from a lot of practice, but there are some techniques you can incorporate to “add a little zing” to your compositions. One of the most effective techniques is the appropriate use of figures of speech. You can make your writings more interesting, descriptive, alive and hold the audience’s interest by the use of these.

Let’s consider this sentence She had deep blue eyes. Now let’s add a little figure of speech to this line She had eyes as blue as the sky and as deep as the ocean. Sounds better? Reads better? Conveys your idea better?

A simple figure of speech can add a lot of dimensions to a sentence. Below are listed most of the commonly used figures of speech. It is not necessary that you really know the names of all of these, just know what they stand for. In fact you will notice that we often use most of them.

Simile The most commonly used figure of speech, it directly compares one object to another, using words “as”, “as though”, “as if”, “as ….. as” and “like” e.g. “When calamity overtakes you like a storm” or “when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind” etc. The two ideas set side by side here are calamity and storm and the other comparison is disaster like a whirlwind.

Metaphor It is similar to simile but uses indirect comparison. It compares two things by saying that one thing is another thing. It does not use the words like or as. e.g. (a) He was a lion in the battlefield. (b) She was a spring flower. You can see that the ideas are superimposed ‘He ..... a lion’ conveys that he is brave in the battlefield. The second example ‘she ... a spring flower’ depicts that she is as fresh as a spring flower.

Hyperbole It is another very commonly used figure of speech, which means exaggeration. It’s an exaggeration to make or reinforce a point. e.g. I begged his pardon a thousand times. A city filled with misers and louts.

Tautology Tautology means the repetition of the same word more than once in a line. e.g. Handsome is as handsome does. A friend in need is a friend indeed. The words ‘handsome’ in the first example and ‘friend’ in the second example are the examples of tautology. It is generally a bad idea to repeat words or ideas in the same sentence, but used properly, it can be deemed correct also.

Alliteration Alliterations imply the repetition of the same sound or letter usually at the beginning of words. A very common example for alliteration are tongue twisters.

e.g. Betty bought some butter but the butter was bitter so Betty bought some better butter to make the bitter butter better. :) Here the repetition is of the sound /b/.

Personification Personification simply means making inanimate things behave in a very human like way. e.g. The wind whispers secrets in my ears. In this example, the word wind is personified.

Onomatopoeia It uses the sound of whatever it is describing. e.g. The tinkle of the bangles / The jingle of the bells / The rustling of the streams The words ‘tinkle’, ‘jingle’ and ‘rustling’ are the sounds of ‘bangles’, ‘bells’ and ‘streams’ respectively.

Litotes This is generally used in a humorous context. It creates an impact by denying the opposite of what is true.

e.g. I never said I didn’t hit him. / The burglar didn’t mind the diamonds he found. Here a sense of humour is apparent.

(This theory to be covered after the Class Assignment is done and analysed)

~ FIGURES OF SPEECH, IDIOMS &, PHRASES ~

IC : PTtkmlb02 (5) of (12)

Oxymoron It is a contradictory phrase. In an oxymoron, we put two totally contrasting ideas together.

e.g. Your answers are perfectly wrong. / It is genuinely fake. / The benign tyrant was on a countryside visit. The contradicting phrase in the first example is ‘perfectly wrong’ and in the second example is ‘genuinely fake’.

Transferred Epithet It is an epithet which has been transferred from the word to which it strictly belongs to another word connected with it in thought.

e.g. Restless night / The plowman homeward plods his weary way. In the first example the night was not restless but the person who was awake through it was restless. In the second example it is the plowman who is weary and tired and not the way (that is tired).

Antithesis It is the use of words with opposite meanings in the same line.

e.g. The good and bad of it lies in where you look. / He was neither fat nor skinny.

Synecdoche (pronounced seenekdaki) It is a figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole or the whole for a part, the special for the general or the general for the special. e.g. Give as this day our daily bread. / One would have thought that we would find willing ears on the part of the newspapers. In the first example ‘bread’ stands for the whole food and perhaps the other necessities of life. In the second example, ‘willing ears’ stands for all the persons incharge of making decisions and ‘newspaper’ stands for all the newspaper publishers.

Ellipsis It is the omission of the common words that make a sentence grammatically correct

e.g. I've been to Paris, but they haven't. <been to Paris> / I like to interview people sitting down. In the second example, we see the omission of who are, while I am, or while we are.

Euphemism It is the substitution of an agreeable or nonoffensive word or expression for one that is harsh, indelicate, or otherwise unpleasant.

e.g. She lay thus in eternal undisturbed sleep. Here ‘eternal undisturbed sleep’ is used for ‘dead’ or ‘buried’.

Anaphora It is the repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of successive clauses.

e.g. Her love made her live, her love made her grieve. / Her beauty was her best friend, her beauty was her worst enemy. The word ‘her’ is repetitively used at the beginning of the clauses.

Apostrophe It is a diversion of discourse from the topic at hand to addressing some person or thing, either present or absent.

e.g. My love for you drives me to great depths. / Will I live normally again? / Oh God! Tell me is my love even true! / Is this what my fate drives me to do??

Paradox It is a seemingly contradictory statement at first reading, but yet on deeper perusal makes sense.

e.g. She lives among us, ten years after her death.

Irony Stating one thing while meaning the exact opposite. When used to taunt and ridicule irony is also called sarcasm.

e.g. Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen. Let them save you when you are in trouble! (Irony)

Figure of speech is a very powerful tool. It can be used subtly and effectively to add a whole new dimension to your words. In fact it would not be a great exaggeration to say, a figure of speech plays a huge part in separating a prose from a poetry. ~

Practical Tip for students: It is a good idea to read a lot of standard literature and understand how these figures of speech are actually used by experts. Once you get some confidence, only then should you use these in your writing(s). Only rarely should you try and use them in your speech it may look quite odd and funny if used wrongly :)
