nasa kapangyarihan kaya angresulta kundi man pag-aalsang mga nasa militar aypagsasanib ng ilang mganaaping mamamayan sasamahan ng New People’sArmy.
Chilling Chile quakeIT was indeed shocking to
learn that an 8.8 magnitudeearthquake devastatedanother country, this timeChile. Last month it wasHaiti.
Despite the catastrophicevent, Filipinos are stillthankful that no Pinoy washurt in that tragedy thatstruck in the night.
According to the Depart-ment of Foreign Affairs(DFA), the Philippine com-munity in Chile and the fewFilipinos in its neighboringcountry of Argentina areapparently safe as the
Philippine embassies in bothsouth American countriesreported no deaths or seriousinjuries from the post-dawnmassive quake.
This was announced byno less that the PhilippineAmbassador to ChileConsuelo Puyat-Reyes whosaid “no Filipino was hurt, except for an ankle injurysustained by a husband of aPhilippine embassy person-nel.”
Puyat-Reyes said a pieceof wood fell on the maninside his bedroom.
The community is com-
posed mostly of FilipinoCatholic clerics engineers, businessmen and spouses ofChilean nationals, and nooverseas workers. Theembassy consists of sevenofficers and staff members, headed by the ambassador.
Puyat-Reyes was quotedby the DFA as saying thatChile is still experiencingaftershocks, but “there islittle flooding due to thetsunami.” Electricity, waterand communications facili-ties are still down in thecapital city of Santiago, where the Embassy islocated.
The main quake lastedabout 15 seconds, causingmuch damage to interiors ofapartments and topplinghousehold fixtures and otheritems, Puyat-Reyes reported.Emergency services from theChilean government havegone into full gear to attendto those affected and to

in Argentina also reportedthat the quake in Chile wasfelt in Buenos Aires and inother Argentinean provinces, especially those along thelong border with Chile.
DFA quoted Ambassadorto Argentina Rey Carandangas reporting there were noFilipino victims. Thereappears to be no damages tostructures despite the strongaftershocks which continueto be felt at reporting time.
The only known Filipinos
in the provinces near theChilean border are in a towncalled Mendoza. They arefour priests from the Societyof the Divine Word and aFilipina married to anArgentinean national. MostFilipinos live in the Argen-tine capital of Buenos Aires.

THE Philippine govern-ment is confident that thepeople in Mindanao wouldeventually live together inpeace, working as caringneighbors for their mutualeconomic prosperity and so-cial progress through educa-tion.
President Arroyo haspushed for the integration ofthe Madrasah into thecountry’s basic educationsystem as part of thegovernment’s peace efforts.
The President said, “Oneof the keys to the future ofMindanao, especially among
the youth, is their education.”Meantime, the Department
of Education (DepEd), theagency is stepping up its ef-forts to provide quality edu-cation to Muslim publicschool children through theMadrasah Program.
Launched in 2004, the pro-gram is part of DepEd’s Mus-lim Basic EducationRoadmap, which is in re-sponse to the Medium-TermPhilippine Development Plan(MTPDP) and the GRP-MNLF(Government of the Republicof the Philippines-Moro Na-tional Liberation Front) Peace
Agreement.Education Undersecretary
for Muslim Affairs ManarosBoransing said, “This is thedepartment’s modest yet sig-nificant contribution topeace-building efforts by gov-ernment and non-govern-ment agencies.”
Boransing said the pro-gram aims to positively con-tribute to the ongoing peaceprocess and to make the pub-lic education system moreinclusive. It also seeks to im-prove the quality of life amongMuslim school childrenthrough education.

Pinoy seamen send $3.4-B in 2009THE Filipino seafarers aboard foreign ves-
sels had sent home some US$3.4 billion in2009.
Former Sen. Ernesto Herrera, Trade UnionCongress of the Philippines (TUCP) secre-tary general, said the remittance is US$366million or 12.06% higher from US$3.034 bil-lion in 2008.
Herrera said Filipino seafarers based inEurope remitted $1.156 billion last year, up$509.594 million or 78.82% higher from$646.406 million in 2008.
According to Herrera, the hefty increasesoutweighed the $325-million or 16 percent
year-on-year drop in remittances from Fili-pino sailors based in America, from $2.031billion to $1.706 billion.
TUCP released the figures followinggovernment’s plan to sell $500 million ofdollar and euro-dominated bonds to over-seas Filipino workers (OFWs) to partly bridgethe projected P293-billion budget deficit thisyear.
The former lawmaker added that last year’s12.06% growth in remittances from sea-basedOFWs was 3 times faster than the 4.15% or$555 million year-on-year increase in the cashsent home by land-based OFWs.
SENATOR and vice presidential candidateLoren Legarda has a “penchant for butter-fly-ism” as she hops from one party to an-other to ensure the existence of her politicalcareer.
Liberal Party director-general Chito Gasconquestioned Legarda’s loyalty, stressing thatthe lady senator “should be the epitome ofloyalty to the people, instead of her personalpolitical interests as shown by her butterflyattitude.”
He also accused Legarda of changing herstand on major issues just so she could pro-tect her political interests.
Legarda ran for senator under the bannerof the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats dur-ing the 1998 elections and supported the im-peachment of then President Joseph Estrada.
She lost her bid for the vice presidency in2004 as the runningmate of the late FernandoPoe Jr., the best friend of Estrada.
The former newscaster is running for vicepresident under the Nacionalista Party.
“How can she support a presidential can-didate she has condemned before and workedto remove as Senate President because of hisinvolvement in the C-5 road anomaly?”Gascon pointed out.
“How can she justify political butterfly-ism? Just because it is convenient for her soshe can pursue her political dreams outsideher own political party? Is this the true EDSAwarrior, or a politician just using EDSA toride on the popular tide of emotion spawnedby people's remembrance of the grandpeople's action that threw out dictatorshipand corruption?” said Gascon.

Ani Regine, “I’vealways wanted to doa musical... Kayamedyo nag-hesitateako ng konti to doTotoy Bato, kinailangan nilaakong i-convince todo it, kasi I wannado this first [Diva].Matagal na talagaito. Dapat talaga itomuna, but hindi pakami ready for it.So, nag-Totoy Batomuna kami. Butnow, we’re ready fora kantaserye, meronna siyang title—kantaserye.”
SYMPATHY FORUGLY PEOPLE.Excited daw talagasi Regine para saDiva.
“I’m very excitedkasi, di ba, laginaman natinsinasabi magandayung project? Peroito, talaga excitingtalaga siya. Nungpinapanood namin[yung rushes],nakakatawa siyaand it is also veryheartwarming. Kasialam mo, kawawasiya, e,” banggit niRegine.
niya maging singer, gusto niya magingsikat... So,siyempre, madaming kanta.Pero I think once ortwice a week, we’llhave a big produc-tion number.
“Oh yes, verymuch!” bulalas niRegine. “Kasi I’mdoing two thingsthat I love very
much, which isacting and of coursesinging.
And I’m withpeople that I reallyreally like, youknow.”
TWO LEADINGMEN. Dalawa angleading men niRegine sa Diva—sina Mark AnthonyFernandez at TJTrinidad.
makakapareha ngAsia’s Songbird siTJ.
Regine. “Hindi koalam kung anoyung...I’m notinvolved. I neverhad a problem withMark, and he’s awonderful actor towork with. Helistens. He’s ontime when you tellhim to be there, hedoesn’t make mewait.
“Siguro anolang... kasi... Akokasi, parang meronakong kontingpagkakakilala sakanya so he kindaneed a little bit ofpush, you know. And I hopethat....ano, parangsana makuhanaman niya yun saibang tao.”
Sa hiwalay nainterview aypinabulaanan niMark Anthony angmga akusasyontungkol sapagbabalik niya samasamang bisyo.
Bakit nga bakapag may projectsi Mark ay palagingnakabuntot na ditoang issue about hispast? Past is pastyou know kaya
tigilan na itech atreformed na itong siMark.
What about TJ?“I’m having a
great time with TJ,”sagot ni Regine.“Actually, ni-requestko nga din siya, e.Ni-request ko ngalahat nung kasamako dito. I wanted towork with him. Ithink he’s a goodactor.”
Kumusta namanang chemistry nilani TJ?
“I think merondin, oo, meron din,”sabi ni Regine.“Alam mo yungchemistry, feelingko naman as longas you’re willing toopen up to yourpartner... Kasi kungmedyo hindi mo ina-allow yung partnermo na, you knowwhat I mean?Siyempre, it’s alove story, hahawakan ka...You have to allowthat to happen, e.Hindi mo napipilityung chemistry, sokailangan yun—teamwork. nilinaw ng Asia’sSongbird na “basicconcept” lang dawang sa kanya.
Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadIt would have been simpler just to buy a new hair
dryer. But determined to save a buck, I decided to fixit myself. In order to loosen the screw that was burieddeep in the handle, I took out the ultimate handyman’shelper—my pocket knife. As I put pressure on theknife to turn the screw, the blade folded back—onmy finger.
I learned a lesson that day: I love myself. And Iam urgent about meeting my needs. There was nothought of, “Well, I don’t really have time to stop thebleeding now. I’ll get to it later.” Also, there was atenderness about how the need was met. I instructedmy first-aid team (my wife and kids) to wash myfinger gently and then to put the bandage on in a waythat would avoid having the hairs on my finger pulledup when it was removed. My thoughts, words, andactions were driven by my love for myself.
To love “your neighbor as yourself” (Luke 10:27)requires the same urgent kind of love. It’s a love thatnotices the need of another person and won’t restuntil it’s been met. It’s a gentle, tender love that thinksand acts carefully. It’s the sacrificial and compassion-ate love that a nameless Samaritan had for a fallentraveler. It’s the kind of love God wants to sharewith your neighbors through you. — Joe Stowell
Lord, help me see the heartfelt needsOf those within my care,
And grant that through my words and deedsYour love with them I’ll share. —D. De HaanYou cannot touch your neighbor’s heart with any-
thing less than your own.

Ex-athlete Darren Evangelistais giving boost to sportsTHE athletes from the Chil-
ean Olympic team in Canadadecided to skip Sunday’s clos-ing ceremony and immedi-ately return to their countryafter being devastated by astrong quake.
News reports disclosedthat an 8.8-magnitude earth-quake hit Chile in the earlyhours of Saturday killing atleast 200 people, according tovarious media reports.
The newspaper said citinga spokesman for the Chileanteam, which was representedat the 2010 Olympic Gamesby three Alpine Skiing athletesand their coaches, that someof them already contacted theirfamilies and “found out thattheir loved ones are fine.”
The tremor occurred some89 kilometers (55.3 miles) tothe north of Chile’s secondlargest city Concepcion, some
341 kilometers (212 miles)from the capital Santiago.
Some 50 nations have beenplaced under a tsunami ad-visory. Areas of concern arethe Hawaiian Islands, FrenchPolynesia, Australia, and Ja-pan. Russia’s Far Eastern re-gion was also advised, butlocal emergency authoritieshave stated that the region isin no danger. Peru has calledoff a tsunami warning.
Chilean athletes leave Olympics after quake
THE National Capital Re-gion proved to be too strongas its athletes performed suc-cessfully at the CHED Na-tional Games.
During the closing rites, thebragging rights went to theNCR sports juggernaut ,which steamrolled the posi-tion in chess, badminton, baseball, basketball, women’ssoftball and table tennis.
With only men’s softballleft unaccounted for, NCRwas way on top of the medalstandings with 162 golds, 42silvers and 40 bronzes, withRegion 6 (Western Visayas) adistant second (40-66-54) andRegion 7 third (33-42-34) andRegion 4-A (Calabarzon)
fourth (25-37-46).Padding the NCR
goldmine was the fact thatteam events account for thenumber players seeing actionin a particular sport, so a re-lay team in athletics or swim-ming – composed of four ath-letes each – is awarded fourmedals in the overall stand-ings.
Swimming (55) and athlet-ics (31) thus accounted forthree-fourths of NCR’s goldoutput.
Commissioner on HigherEducation ChairmanEmmanuel Angeles, the mov-ing force behind the sportsshowcase, thanked all of theathletes and participants for the
success of the Games duringSaturday’s closing ceremonies.
He said he was proud ofthe fact that the meet was ableto spot potentials who mayone day compete for flag incountry in international com-petition.
Angeles cited track sensa-tion Serenata Saluan, aTausug native and UST fresh-man student, who won fourgolds and UP swimmersMaria Claire Adorna, whowon seven golds, and CarlaGrabador, who had six goldand one silver, in event theorganized by the CHED andsponsored by the PSC,PAGCOR, Smart, San MiguelCorp. STI and Smart.
