2016/2017 admission on the programme had

Professor Yahuza Bello said that this was the

first time the University hosted such an

important delegation of Qur‟anic reciters, many

of whom he said were equal to university

Professors but for lack of the western system of

education were being relegated. He thanked

Khalifah Isyaka Rabi‟u and his family members

for the onerous contribution to the University.

He said the University would provide a

framework that would enable the full

BUK Model Primary School Employs

27 Teachers - Committed to Becoming

Among the Best

Bayero University Model Primary School has

employed additional 27 new teachers expected

to report for work from 1st September, 2016, the

Acting Principal, Malam Sule O. Ademoh had

disclosed.

Speaking during this year‟s speech and prize

giving ceremony held at the Old Campus

premises of the school on Friday 1st July, 2016,

he said the resolve to employ additional staff

was informed by the decision of the Federal

Government, directing Vice Chancellors to

convert all staff primary schools to private ones.

Malam Sule Ademoh said the Management of

the model primary school was committed to

ensuring that the school emerged as one of the

most impactful model schools in Kano state.

He said the model school had about 1,600 pupils

and 36 class rooms, 27 in the Old Campus and 9

at the New Campus. He expressed delight that

over 80 percent of the pupils who sat for various

external examinations had passed into higher

private and public schools.

Malam Sule Ademoh said the model school had

won second position of the MacMillan Team

Sprit Competition out of 50 competing schools,

and was given prizes that include a trophy, a

generator set and books, amongst others.

He also said Abdussalam Mika‟il of primary 6

won the Kano State Merit Award organised by

the Nigerian Turkish International College in

collaboration with National Mathematical

Centre, Abuja and was given a scholarship for

his J.S.S at the Kano Turkish College Centre.

The Principal further said that the school had

made a landmark record during the Bukavu

Barrack Command Schools Athletics Inter-

House Sports Competition, saying out of the 6

participating schools for the relay race, the staff

school took 1st position in the 100 by 4 boys

relay and 2nd

position in girls‟ relay.

He urged parents to be committed to the

education of their children by responding

promptly to payment of school fees, the

provision of complete instructional or working

materials, encouraging their children to develop

reading culture, coming to schools to interact

and monitoring the progress of their children,

amongst others.

Malam Sule Ademoh commended the

management of Bayero University for

transforming the school to real private model

primary school following the Federal

Government‟s Circular of 2014 and 2015 which

directed all Vice Chancellors to convert staff

primary schools to be privately managed.

Pay More Attention to Your Work -

SSANU Challenges Members

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian

Universities (SSANU) has challenged its staff

members anywhere in the university to pay

maximum attention and be more committed to

their primary assignments for the overall

development of the university.

This call was made by the Public Relations

Officer of the association, Nura Garba, on

behalf of the Chairman, Haruna Aliyu at a

2

The SSANU told members that the

administration of the Vice Chancellor, Professor

Muhammad Yahuza Bello was committed to

improving the welfare of the staff and was

poised to ensuring that competence and

excellence are entrenched in all staff of the

University.

The union further charged its members to strive

hard to be punctual, committed, dedicated and

creative in their various places of work and

avoid being found wanting in anything capable

of smearing the reputation of the union.

The Chairman, Comrade Haruna Aliyu, said the

union would create an open door policy for its

members and that the union would be operated

through committees system. He informed the

congress that an Advisory Council had been

Distorted Idiomatic Expression (3)

With Sheriff Ahmed

This week we shall discuss five very interesting

idiomatic expressions that are being distorted in this

country. I believe it is time we corrected them once

and for all. As usual, we shall attempt to explain the

idioms with examples where necessary. Please do

not hesitate to draw our attention to our own

shortcomings. It is part of the learning process.

Thank you.

Our resolve to work together vaporized into

thin air within a twinkling of an eye. Two idioms are combined here: „vaporised into thin

air‟ and „within a twinkling of an eye‟. Both idioms

have been distorted. The first one should read

vanished into thin air, while the second should read

in the twinkling of an eye. As I have advised

consistently, idiomatic expressions must not be

adulterated. They must be used as accurately as

possible.

The committee chairman said, “Please give the

respondent the benefit of doubt.”

The precise idiom, it should be noted, is give

somebody the benefit of the doubt, meaning to

assume that somebody is telling the truth about

something or is innocent of something because there

is not enough evidence that the person is lying or

guilty. Note that the omission of the definite article

(the) before „doubt‟ deforms the idiom.

“He wants the position by hook or crook,” the

APC politician accused the DPD senator.

This is another distorted idiomatic expression. The

precise idiom is by hook or by crook. Our society is

replete with all sort of incorrect expressions and

nobody cares, to the detriment of the quality of our

use of English. Our students are the greatest victims.

That‟s why the Use of English has become

compulsory in all tertiary institutions in this country.

In our days there was nothing like that in the

university. Your Ordinary Level English result was

enough for you to pursue your course of study. Very

sad, isn‟t it?

The occasion was marked with pomp and

pageantry.

Please note that the words „pomp‟ and „pageantry‟

are synonyms. Isn‟t it tautological to use the words

together? Anyway, that‟s not the reason why it‟s

incorrect. The reason is simply that the native

speakers of the English language do not say so. It‟s

a typical Nigerian English. The correct idiomatic

expression is pomp and circumstance, as in:

a. The last convocation ceremony in BUK was

marked with pomp and circumstance.

4

b. The visit of the new British Prime Minister to

Nigeria was accompanied by all the usual pomp

and circumstance.

It‟s also correct English to say pomp and ceremony,

as in:

c. President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral victory

last year witnessed scenes of pomp and ceremony

not seen in this country since independence.

Collocation is very important in communication. It‟s

so in all languages. Take a look at the following

sentence:

d. “I‟ll visit you tomorrow if the weather permits.”

Syntactically the sentence is correct. But native

speakers of the English language will say:

e. I’ll visit you tomorrow weather permitting.

In an attempt to hide from his fiancée at a

gambling scene, John crashed into his

authoritarian boss: from frying pan to fire.

Our interest here is the expression „from frying pan

to fire‟. The precise English saying is out of the

frying pan into the fire, meaning from one difficult

or dangerous situation to an even worse one.

Student Affairs Moves to New Building

This is to inform the University Community and

the General Public, that the Students‟ Affairs

Division has moved to a new building, opposite

Coke Village, precisely the former Special

Education Building, New Campus.

Health and Safety Advice from the

Health Services Department - Toward

Better Female Hygiene

Wash your pudenda thoroughly twice or

thrice with un-scented, non-deodorant soap

and dry yourself completely.

After defecation always wipe from front to

back away from pudenda opening.

Shave your pubic hairs regularly as

overgrown hairs can habour germs.

Frequent douching should be avoided as

frequent douching even with warm water can

wash away friendly bacteria (normal flora of

the area).

After swimming immediately change to dry

clothing as wet underwears encourage

infection.

Relaxing in a wet suit made up of synthetic

fibers increases the risk of infection.

Avoid using tampons if you have infection

as tampons can absorb your medication and

cause irritation.

Change feminine pads and tampons

frequently as long staying pads and tampons

may encourage replication of harmful

microorganism.

Wear only pure cotton under wears as it is

safer to your organ.

Wear pantyhose with a cotton crotch only

Wear loose-fitting pants/shorts and avoid

very tight ones they would not allow even a

little circulation of air.

Have your male partner wash his organ

before and after coitus.
