January 21st 1968: An American B-52 bomber carrying nuclear warheads has just crashed on the polar ice near the US military Air Base in Danish controlled Thule, Greenland. A few days later, responsible governments classify the crash as a Broken Arrow scenario (nuclear accident) but proclaims the situation being under control. No cause for concern in relation to radioactive contamination or violation of foreign power’s sovereignty, nuclear policy. Hundreds of Thule workers are set to work, helping in the gigantic clean-up operation. After eight months, all traces of the crashed aircraft and the plutonium-contaminated snow are gone. The case is closed. 18 years on, while covering a local workers compensation story, reporter Poul Brink, suddenly runs into suspicious circumstance linking back to the concealed 68’ nuclear accident. Apparently the full and true story about the crash lays well-protected deep under the Thule Bay’s ice cap and deep down the classified archives in the US. Trailer: http://www.idealisten.dk

Sein BruderArjom hat ihn in die Todeszone geschickt, um nach Wertsachen zu suchen, diesich auf dem Schwarzmarkt verkaufen lassen. Vor allem Dokumente wie Pässe undFührerscheine sind interessant. Andreij begreift nicht die radioaktive Gefahr, in die er sich begibt. Auf seinen Streifzügen durch verlassene Wohnungen träumt er sich in das Leben der Familien, die dort einmal gewohnt haben. Während er sich immer weiter seinen Fantasien hingibt, die seine seelischen Wunden langsam heilen lassen, beginnt die Radioaktivität seinen Körper zu zerstören. Genau 30 Jahre sind seit der Reaktorkatastrophe von Tschernobyl vergangen. Das geborstene Atomkraftwerk ist nach wie vor eine Bedrohung, das Sperrgebiet weiterhin radioaktiv belastet. Ein deutsches Filmteam kehrt an den Ort der Katastrophe zurück und zieht Bilanz.

Kalter Krieg: Täglich steigen B-52-Bomber der USA bestückt mit Atombomben in Richtung Sowjetunion auf, um für einen etwaigen Gegenschlag zur Stelle zu sein. Fast genau vor 50 Jahren, am 17. Januar 1966 explodiert eines der Flugzeuge mit vier Wasserstoffbomben an Bord über Südspaniens bei Palomares in der Region Almeria ab. Die vom Himmel fallenden Bomben haben die 5000-fache Sprengkraft der Hiroshima-Bombe. Zwei der Bomben bersten und verseuchen die Tomaten-Anbauregion mit Plutonium. Eine der H-Bomben landet im Meer und wird erst nach Wochen gefunden. Bis heute wird die radioaktive Verseuchung der touristischen Region von Palomares heruntergespielt. Film über den weltweit größten Urantagebau in Namibia und die so genannten Hottentotten, die in Wirklichkeit Nama heißen und deren Land und Wasserressourcen vom Uranabbau mehr und mehr betroffen sind. Uranabbau erzeugt nicht nur radioaktiven, giftigen Staub, sondern verschlingt auch große Mengen an Wasser und bedroht das Land der Nama. Zusammen mit Nama-König Samuel reisen die beiden Filmemacher entlang des unterirdischen Kuiseb-Flusses, der Lebensader der Nama.

Warnings regarding the radioactive Legacy are not heard by those making nuclear agreements. Estimates are that already 2,5 million people in South Africa are affected by the negative impacts of the uranium tailings dams. Birth rates of kids with mental and physical disabilities are shockingly high, the industry escapes its responsibilities. But still, government plans for the future are investments in new nuclear power stations no matter what the legacy looks like.
Grosse Teile der Bevölkerung Süd Afrikas in und um Johannesburg haben mit den Hinterlassenschaften des Uran und Goldabbaus zu kämpfen. Süd Afrika ist das einzige Land auf dem Kontinent mit zwei laufenden Kernkraftwerken. Das eine zur Energiegewinnung, das zweite berühmt berüchtigt für seine Unfälle. Der President des Landes Jacob Zuma macht sich stark für eine Erweiterung der nuklearen Kapazitäten um 9600MW, was der bisher grössten je unternommenen Infrastrukturellen Massnahme für Süd Afrika gleichkäme. Andere Länder haben auch Interesse an der Kernkraft. Die Tradition lokalen Widerstandes ist ein Faktor mit dem zu rechnen ist. http://www.ujuzi.de

February 13, 1960 at 7:04 am, about 40 kilometres away from the town of Reggane, the first French nuclear bomb exploded in the Algerian sky. Code name: Blue Jerboa, 70 Kt power, four times as much as on Hiroshima. How was France able to implant its atomic bases sensitive and secret installations, in Algeria a country at war? The question of Sahara and military experiments was the major stake in the secret negotiations between the French government and the FLN. For general de Gaulle, Sahara was not a part of Algeria. For the FLN, on the contrary, the Algerian territory extended from banks of the méditerranée to the borders of Sahara. France finally recognized the Algerian sovereignty on Sahara. In exchange, the FLN accepted that France pursues its nuclear tests in independent Algeria during five years. All in all 17 atomic explosions were realized in Algeria. Some of them were enamelled by incidents, the gravest has took place May 1st, 1962, it is the shooting in the name of code "Beryl", it is considered as a major accident in the military nuclear power. This movie reveals this secret side of the A-bomb history.

In 1960, in the north of Algeria, war was rampant. But 2000 km from the battlefield, another project was emerging from within the sands of the Sahara. In the eyes of General De Gaulle, this project was to be more important than the war itself. In the Hoggar, officers and scientists installed the first French centre of nuclear experimentation. Apart from these scientists and military men whose careers had already reached a peak, a contingent of soldiers and the local population were also asked to contribute to the realisation of this gigantic project.

5 JAHRE FUKUSHIMA - 30 JAHRE TSCHERNOBYL 50 JAHRE ATOMBOMBEN-UNFALL VON PALOMARESDas Internationale Uranium Film Festival ist zum fünften Mal in Berlin: Vom 28. September bis zum 2. Oktober bringt das Filmfest atomare Filme ins Kino der KulturBrauerei. Das Uranium Film Festival wurde 2010 in Rio de Janeiro gegründet, um außergewöhnlichen Filmen über Atomkraft und radioaktive Risiken eine globale Plattform zu geben. Nukleare Katastrophen wie in Tschernobyl, Fukushima oder in Palomares sollen nicht in Vergessenheit geraten.
„Das Uranium Film Festival ist einzigartig, denn es versucht, dieses komplexe Thema für alle zugänglich zu machen.
