Shore ExcursionsAt the heart of each Voyage of Discovery

is the renowned shore excursion programme. Taking in the “must-see”

sights & hidden gems that you might not expect, each excursion is meticulously planned to ensure that your time ashore is as enjoyable as your time on board.

Perhaps you’ll tick off the Big Five on an exciting safari in the African Savannah, or visit St Petersburg’s world- renowned Hermitage Museum for an evening recital. You could take

the chance to admire the iconic water lilies in Monet’s Garden, or discover the unique volcanic landscape of the Azores. Or you’ll find yourself relaxing on the deck of a catamaran in the Seychelles, gazing at the idyllic blue sky.

The shore excursions give you the chance to experience the essence of a destination, adding a truly memorable dimension to your cruise- and they’re optional so you can tailor your time ashore to suit you perfectly.

Guest Speaker Programmes

• Expert advice from the ship’s shore excursion staff & port lecturers on board

• Excellent local operators- many of whom Voyages Of Discovery have worked with for a number of years

• Professional & helpful local, English-speaking guides

• Maximise your time ashore- go straight to the high-lights without waiting, negotiating fares or having the bother of currency exchange

• The tour timings are planned to make the most of the ship’s schedule enabling you to take multiple tours

• In the unlikely event that your tour returns late & the ship has had to sail, they will arrange at their expense for you to re-join Voyager in the next port of call

• All of the local operators comply with a minimum of £10m public liability insurance

• You can make a saving on the price of your excursions by booking ahead of your cruise

With so many fascinating places to discover Voyages of Discovery aim to ensure you

gain the best possible understanding of each destination’s culture, history & wildlife. To achieve this, they carefully handpick the Guest Speakers, choosing experts whose depth of knowledge & passion for their subject will truly bring each destination to life.

The lecture programme is recognised as one of the best at sea- and better still, it is included in the cost of your cruise. All Guest Speakers are noted authorities

on their subjects, and they will share their unique insight with you through fascinating & well-presented talks. You can attend each one In person or, if you’d prefer, watch them on your cabin TV.

The speakers are drawn from diverse sources including academia, the military, the diplomatic service and the arts. They cover a wide variety of subjects including architecture, naval history, photograph, music, gardens and genealogy, so there’s sure to be something to suit your interests.

Steve Ragnall

Dr Susan GubbayDr Helen Doe will describe the ships and the people that have sailed the Atlantic coast across the centuries. You will hear the words of ordinary seamen on board at the battle of Trafalgar, discover the world of medieval piracy off the coast of Spain & learn about the smugglers in the English Channel.

One of the busiest waterways in the world & close proximity to France has given us a unique maritime experience. Steve will be exploring the stories of the men, the ships & the music which make up this rich history

The cruise follows the route of historic 19th century voyages of ocean exploration. Dr Gubbay will describe the challenges faced by these pioneers as they laid the foundations of modern oceanography, as well as more recent discoveries & efforts to conserve the marine life in the region. Cold water coral reefs, pilot whales, the vampire squid & the black scabbard fish are all part of the story.

YOUR ITINERARYDay 1 Portsmouth

Day 2 St Peter Port (Guernsey)The Channel Islands are an unspoilt corner of the British Isles with a character of their own. Street names’ are in French, yet the currency and language are English. At approximately 38 square kilometres Guernsey is the second largest of the Islands and St Peter Port, the principal town of this peaceful haven, is a quiet oasis of charm and sophistication.

Day 3 At Sea

Day 4 La Coruna (Spain)According to local beliefs, La Coruña was an ancient city founded by Hercules. Celts, Phoenicians and Romans have occupied the city, which, surrounded by ocean, has long been a point of departure. Perhaps the greatest event in its history took place in 1588 when 130 galleons of the Spanish Armada sailed from the harbour to attack England. One year later the English fleet under Sir Francis Drake attacked the port – a reprisal ultimately repelled by the people of La Coruña inspired by the city’s heroine Maria Pita. The modern city, capital of the Spanish province bearing the same name, is a gateway to the pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela.

Day 5 & 6 At Sea (2 Days)

Day 7 Praia De Vitoria (The Azores)Originally called ‘Ilha de Jesus Cristo’, Terceira was so called, as it was the third island of the Azores to be discovered. It is the second largest after São Miguel. Praia da Vitoria is gateway to this island where a kaleidoscope of scents, shapes and colours are all part of a contrasting landscape. Angra do Heroismo, which is the island’s capital, is on the UNESCO list of World Patrimony.

Day 8 Horta (The Azores)Through the centuries Horta has been a welcome sight for sailors drawn to the shelter of its harbour. It is the principal town on the island of Faial, which is one of the nine volcanic islands of the Azores archipelago, one of the most isolated spots in the North Atlantic. Yet the volcanic nature of the island belies its colourful landscape. Pretty windmills sit among lavender shrubs and a blue haze rises above fields of hydrangeas – the colour from which ‘The Blue Island’ of Faial earns its name.

Day 9 Ponta Delgada (The Azores)Most of the nine Azorean islands have been defined by a cataclysmic earthquake or volcanic eruption. São Miguel’s darkest hour occurred in 1522, when Vila Franco do Camp o – its original capital, was engulfed by a mudslide following a mighty earthquake. The survivors resettled at Ponta Delgada and 24 years later it became the island’s new capital. In the past 20 years the town has seen rapid expansion bringing the archipelago its first university, shopping mall, international-class hotels and dual carriageway. Yet Ponta Delgada main-tains a relaxed tempo and is an ideal starting point to explore the subtleties of the island’s spectacular landscape.

Day 10 At Sea

Day 11 Funchal (Maderia)Madeira’s bustling capital Funchal is built around its harbour and spreads up the sides of steep mountains. The lively and historic port is full of narrow streets, pavement cafés, restaurants, gardens and museums. Its 15th century cathedral and scalloped paving stones of Praça do Municipio count among the landmarks, while overhead a cable car – the city’s latest addition – glides from the Botanical Gardens to the lofty heights of Monte.

Day 12 At Sea

Day 13 Lisbon (Portugal)Throughout its long history, Celts, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths and Moors all ruled over LISBON for a time. Following its conquest from the Moors in 1147 it fell under the rule of the Christian Portuguese. Sights of interest are the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery, both world heritage sites, the April 25th Bridge, sister to the Golden Gate, and the towering Christ the King statue.
