Wainuiomata has yet another national champion in their ranks, this time in darts.

Ben Herman won the recent Youth and Junior National Championships, that were held in Wainuiomata.

The victory is something that has made both the club and Ben’s family extremely proud, although Ben himself wasn’t really too sure to make of all the fuss.

“Once the Nationals were over, I didn’t really like all the attention, people taking photos and stuff,” he says.

continued from page 2Ben won the title after pro-

gressing through many other competitors that competed over the three days, and han-dled the pressure well through-out the tournament.

“I didn’t even know it was the fi nal when I was playing in it, I thought it was the semifi nal,” he says.

“I only started to realise that it was the final when there were no other people playing, then I started to get nervous.”

Ben started to learn darts three years ago, when his father introduced him to the sport, and he has enjoyed it ever since.

His father Mark says that Ben enjoys the individual aspect of the sport, while Ben says he enjoys most things about the sport, especially when he wins.

Mark was possibly more excited than Ben was when he won.

“I was ecstatic when he won the title, I was extremely proud of him,” he says.

“I knew he was going to win it, he had that look when he was playing.”

The Youth and Junior players start off at 301, when they get older they work their way up to 501, where the professionals play from.

Wainuiomata Junior and Youth Darts Convener Jeanne

Silcock says that the entire club is extremely proud of Ben and also how everyone performed at the tournament.

“We are very proud of what he achieved,” she says.

“What he is doing reminds us of what Jonathan Silcock was doing at his age.”

Jonathan is now a highly

ranked player in the country, and took a similar journey to what Ben is currently taking, both as a darts player and personality wise.

“Jonathan was quiet and reserved at his age, much like Ben is, both won the National Title at a similar age, and both are very good players.”

The Mururoa Nuclear Veter-ans Group Inc is searching for all those who sailed to Mururoa Atoll in 1973 aboard the frig-ates HMNZS Canterbury and HMNZS Otago.

The veterans took part in the Labour Government’s protest against French nuclear testing in the Pacifi c and witnessed atmospheric testing.

The group, formed in 2013 and registered as a Legal Soci-ety, is monitoring the medical conditions that have affected

not only the personnel aboard the Otago and Canterbury but also of their children and grandchildren.

President of the MNVG Inc Mr Wayne O’Donnell says as there is no full list (Nominal Crew Lists) of the veterans who served at Mururoa aboard the two Frigates, the group is seeking the public’s help.

“Unfortunately over the years contact has been lost with the widows and children of those who have ‘crossed the bar’

and we need to make contact with these people so they can be informed of any fi ndings. We also need to record any medical issues suffered by the generational children of the Nuclear Veterans.”

The group is currently estab-lishing a trust fund to enable the medical testing of the veterans’ children and grandchildren.

“It is hoped the results will establish the truth of the genetic transfer of illnesses related to the nuclear exposure encoun-

tered by the crews that were sent to Mururoa Atoll in 1973,” says Mr O’Donnell.

“The group recently met with the Minister of Veterans’ Af-fairs Craig Foss to update him on moves to collect information on health issues that are being suffered by the children and grandchildren. We welcome his assurances that he will fully consider the information when it is provided.” Anyone with informa-tion should email [email protected].

The Wainuiomata Coast Road Church is planning for their 150th Jubilee, which is taking place on Waitangi Day next year.

The Church opened on that day in 1866, and has been opened ever since, being a major part of the history in Wainuiomata.

Plans at this stage are still being fi nalized but they are hop-ing to hold celebrations on the Saturday, with a Thanksgiving service to be held on the day after.

On 29 January 1853 Richard Prouse Snr purchased the land that would later become the site of the new Church.

Built by the pioneers in 1866 as

a Wesleyan Church (Methodist), it was used for regular services until the Congregation outgrew it and moved to the new St Stephens Church in 1957.

Since then, although the Con-gregation held at least one ser-vice per year in the old building, it had laid unused as a Church.

However during this time it had been occupied as a club

rooms for the now defunct Wainuiomata Arts Society from 1972 until 2009.

The Church is the third oldest in the Wellington Region and is popular for weddings and other functions.

The Church currently hosts an annual Anzac Celebration concert every year, which is always well attended.

Pak n Save Petone has once again proved that even a supermarket can make a top quality pie after taking out the prize for top Steak and Cheese in the country.

Owner Leo O’Sullivan and Baker Roger Cathro both say the secret to the success has been the fact that all the ingredients are sourced in store, and are tested thor-oughly.

Leo calls Roger a bit of a “Pie Picasso” and is ex-tremely proud of what the baker has achieved.

“All the pies are consist-ently good, the butchers know what type of meat he wants, and he gets all the ingredients in store,” he says.

Roger makes thousands of pies a week, and says that he is constantly updating the pies to make sure they are as good as they can be.

“I want to make something that I would want to buy and that I think that people would want to buy,” says Roger.

The Pie Awards were open to everyone in New Zealand, if they produce pies they could enter, no matter if they were a bakery, a supermar-ket, butchery or whatever.

“It is great that a Super-

Masters of the Steak and Cheese

market has won this award, we were competing against bakeries from all around the county,” says Roger.

The Supermarket also

placed highly in other pies as well, getting top 10 placing’s with three other pies.

Roger says at the end of the day he loves his job and

wouldn’t be able to do it if he wasn’t as passionate about it.

“I love a good pie, and I love making the pies better and better.”

Lower Hutt Man Cyril Naylor cele-brated his 100th Birthday last week, and got a visit Labour MP Trevor Mallard to celebrate with him.

Cyril is a long time Labour sup-porter, hence why the MP went and visited his home, and give him a couple of old Labour Momentos as a present.

One of these was a 1938 poster from that year’s election campaign, which was in Trevor’s Wainuiomata offi ce.

The Wainuiomata News wishes Cyril all the best and a very happy birthday.

A Trio of players from Wai-nuiomata High School have been selected for the Wellington Under 16 rugby squad this year.

Joshua Onekawa, Michael Martin and Tanara Haenga were selected in the squad that com-promises players from school all around the Wellington region.

This is a great achievement for the school whose First XV play in Premier Three, most of the players selected come from Premier One Schools.

The Three boys were extremely proud of what they achieved, and are also proud that all three have

been selected.“It’s good that the team is get-

ting recognition,” says Joshua who plays as a First Five.

He says that he was really happy when he found out that he made the squad.

The same can be said for the other two, Tanara says that he was also extremely proud when he got selected and is looking forward to stepping up to the challenge.

“I am looking forward to the coaching and training that we will get while in the team,” he says.

Michael, who has been selected for Wellington representative

teams in the past was also happy he made, as well as a couple of his team mates.

Last year he mentioned that any of his team mates could take the step up, and says he knew they could do it.

The boys want to thank their coaches and managers, Phillip Kauika, Daniel Wallwork and Moana Kuma for all the help they got in making the team.

Their coach Phillip says he is extremely proud of what the boys achieved, saying they are all extremely talented players, but it is their work effort that got them in the squad.

“It has been a long time since

our school has had multiple representatives in the Wellington Rugby team and just goes to show that with hard work, com-mitment and dedication students from Wainuiomata High School will go places,” he says.

“We are looking forward to watching these boys play for Wellington and the extra learning they will receive will only make them better players and no doubt they will pass their learning on to the rest of their First XV team mates.”

This year has been a successful one for the First XV, who are cur-rently unbeaten and are playing a home semifi nal this weekend.

Asthma affects one in four children and one in six adults in New Zealand. Most of us are familiar with the symptoms of asthma that include wheezing, coughing, (particularly during the night), chest tightness and sometimes gasping for breath. Some people have one or more of these symptoms most of the time, while others can get them suddenly, when they are having an ‘asthma attack’. It can be particularly distressing when these symptoms occur and it is important to try and understand what is happening, how to control them and how to prevent them from occurring.Asthma is often triggered when things such as dust mites and pollen cause breathing tubes to react and become tighter. Cigarette smoke, changes in air temperature, and other lung illnesses (e.g. bronchitis), can also trigger asthma. The tubes swell and mucus builds-up, making it harder for air to go in and out of the lungs and causing a whistle-like, wheezy, sound. Helping people manage their asthma requires a team approach and the pharmacists at Clive’s Chemist can be part of that team. "We provide patients with advice about how their medicines work and the correct use of medicines (especially inhalers and spacers) according to their own particular asthma action plans, to get the best results”. The main types of asthma medicines are preventers, relievers and, symptom controllers. When used every day preventers are important because they keep asthma under control. Relievers are for use during an 'attack', to open-up the tubes, relax tightened muscles and relieve symptoms. Symptom controllers relax airway muscles, and are generally used every day, along with a preventer. By following their own action plans, people can balance the use of preventers, relievers and symptom controllers to keep their asthma under control, take action early during an asthma 'attack', to prevent more serious problems, and bring their asthma back under control. If you have any questions about your asthma medications or controlling your symptoms, come and see one of the team at Clive's Chemist.

Students at Wainuiomata Pri-mary School that call themselves the Wainui Enviro Warriors are trying to make the world a better place, starting at their school.

Last year a garden was built in an attempt to encourage more butterflies to gather in the school, and this week they opened a fence mural that runs alongside the garden.

The students are all very proud of it and are pleased with how the garden and mural has turned out, plus they have had a load of fun doing it.

Their teacher Kristen Fraser

says that the students have been working very hard on the garden area, and deserve to feel proud of it.

“The Students built birdhouses and birdfeeders earlier this year with the help of our parent volunteers,” she says.

The mural was started in late term two, and completed just after the holidays.

“We would like to thank our sponsors Dulux, Bunnings Nae-nae and the Fitzroy Tavern for all their help, as well as all the parent volunteers,” says Kristen.

The Wainui Enviro Warriors is made up of around 55 students, both junior and senior students

are involved. The aim of the group is to

encourage the students to learn about how people can affect the environment, and what they can do to help fi x it.

One of the parent helpers is Miriam Exley, who says she re-ally enjoys coming to the school and being involved in what the students are learning.

“It’s not only the students that are learning, the parents are learning at home as the children are encouraging them to do more environmentally friendly things as well,” she says.

“The children have really got-ten into it as well.”

People may have noticed that there is a lot of red stickers on doors around Wainuiomata, the reason for this is a Consumer New Zealand drive to bring peace to people in their own homes.

The stickers were distributed by Genesis Energy to its custom-ers last week after the company

put a ban on door knocking last year.

Customers of the company that receive the bill in the mail got the added bonus of the sticker in the bill, if you were on email the option was given on there.

The stickers are supported by a lot of people, including those in Consumer NZ.

We all know one of the best things we can do for young people is help get them a fulfi lling job and that is why Hutt City Council has and is supporting “YOUth Inspire” Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs. It is a pilot programme being run right here in our valley. The Taskforce continues to provide opportunities for young people of Wainuiomata, who may otherwise not achieve their full potential.

During July, YOUth Inspire placed three young people into work and coordinated two local business experts to mentor two of our young people who aspire to set up their own businesses.

It is really wonderful to see local business leaders stepping up to train and develop the young people in their community, and to see these young people rising to the challenge. If you are a local business and interested in helping out, please contact the Taskforce through Council. They would be pleased to hear from you.

I’d like to acknowledge Bronson, Ali and Tyler and the whole team of business and community partners who are supporting this. You are creating a wonderful legacy.

You will see work is progressing well with the foundation of the new summit bridge at the top of the Wainuiomata Hill. Council’s determination to champion the footpath has paid off with

gaining New Zealand Transport Agency funding. We are going to see fantastic improvements for walkers and cyclists over the coming months.

Still on the issue of safety on the Hill, many of you will probably share my frustration of coming over the Hill and seeing so many lights not working. Please ring the company responsible for the lights “Wellington Electric” as I am sure more calls will see us get better service.

Finally congratulations to our service clubs of the Valley ; Pencarrow Lions on celebrating 30 years of service to the community, Riddiford Lions for their mid-winter Dinner for the elderly, Senior Citizens Club for their 30 year Anniversary and to the Volunteer Fire Bridge celebrating 70 years of outstanding Service to Wainuiomata..

We are blessed to have such dedicated people serving and supporting this great community.

Till next time, take care and look after each other.

Chris Bishop, National List MP based in the Hutt Valley, has encouraged Hutt Valley young people to apply for fund-ing from the Youth Fund 2016, which makes $200,000 avail-able for community projects led by young people.

“The Youth Fund is unique in that it supports projects

designed and led by young people themselves, either work-ing alone or in partnership with youth organisations.

“Young people make up the panels that assess applica-tions and decide where funding goes, making this a completely youth-led initiative. This helps young people between the ages

of 12 and 24 develop decision-making and leadership skills.

“We have some hugely tal-ented young people in the Hutt doing amazing things in a huge range of fi elds, as well as many youth focused organisations, many of whom I’ve met in the past few months.

“I really encourage some of

the Hutt’s young people to ap-ply for funding for any special projects they’re planning.

“Last year’s Youth Fund sup-ported 44 successful projects, including getting young people involved with helping to run cultural learning centres; plan-ning the refurbishment of a youth space to use for home-

work, workshops and com-munity events; and assisting young people with intellectual disabilities make the transition from school to adult life,” says Mr Bishop.

Funding is available for amounts up to $7000, with ap-plications closing on Thursday 10 September 2015.

Wainuiomata has produced many famous people from over the years, people known all over the country, and in some cases outside of the country as well.

We all know some of the great sporting names that have come from the valley, these days Piri Weepu, Neemia Tialata and Tana Umaga are well known in the valley and the world.

There are people that are famous from off the sporting fi eld however.

Margie Abbott, the wife of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott grew up in Wai-nuiomata, Lotto host Sonia Gray is another former Wai-nuiomata resident.

Rugby League is where most

of Wainuiomata’s famous fi g-ures have come from however, with multiple players from the Wainuiomata Rugby League Club gaining national promi-nence by playing in Australia or elsewhere.

The Lomax Brothers both played for the Canberra Raid-ers, with both brothers taking different paths after that.

John played for the North Queensland Cowboys and the Melbourne Storm after that, while David played for the Western Reds in the Super League, then spent a season playing in France before return-ing to play for Newcastle, be-fore leaving to play in England.

In one season the NRL Grand Final had representatives of the Wainuiomata club on both sides of the fi eld, David Faiumu for

the Cowboys and Paul Wha-tuira for the Tigers.

Piri Weepu’s older borther Billy played for the Manly Sea Eagles at one point, and there have been other former players that have gone far.

On the Union side of things, there have been three Manu Samoa representatives that have played for the club, Uale Mai, Justin Va’a and Earl Va’a being these three.

Two All Blacks have been part of the club, Piri Weepu, and be-lieve it or not Jonah Lomu has played for Wainuiomata, two games that both created more buzz than anyone can believe.

There are many more locals that have gone far in the world, there is no time to name them all, but we would welcome any input that you have.

Residents of Lower Hutt are being urged to have their say on the fl ood protection options that are out for feedback and consultation from 3 August until 14 September.

This project is being led by the Greater Wellington Re-gional Council, which is hold-ing open days and information stands in Lower Hutt, as well as information and submission forms online.

Hutt City Council Deputy Mayor and Chair of the City Development Committee, David Bassett says it is a signifi cant project for Lower Hutt.

“We really want our residents to get well informed and have their say."

Consultation with the Lower Hutt community in 2001 re-sulted in an agreement to reach a level of flood protection against a 1-in-400 year fl ood.

In the current round of con-sultation the community is being presented with two key options to reach this agreed level of protection; one op-tion is to begin the full work

required within the next fi ve years, and the other option is a staged approach, likely to eventually result in the removal of the same number of properties; about 75 on the west side of the river.

"We are very aware that some residents are greatly affected by these proposals, and that each of these options presents a very different scenario for them -mainly in terms of timing,” Deputy Mayor David Bassett says,

“I encourage them to fully engage with the Greater Wel-lington Regional Council in this consultation process and give their feedback on these options."

The Regional Council has been working with Hutt City Council and the NZ Transport Agency to ensure co-ordinated planning around this sig-nifi cant project, while fl ood protection is at the forefront there are also opportunities from this project to enhance public space and transport.

In this current consultation, the community is also being

asked for feedback on plans for enhancing Lower Hutt's CBD as the section of the river that is being upgraded, from Kennedy-Good Bridge to Ewen Bridge, runs alongside the city centre.

"The main focus of this pro-ject is fl ood protection, which is essential for Lower Hutt,” the Deputy Mayor says.

“The section of the river between Melling and Ewen bridges is a key retail and com-mercial district, and there are important services here, There are also potentially devastat-ing effects further downstream in the event of a large fl ood.”

"It makes sense to see what else is possible alongside this protection work. This work offers an opportunity to better connect the CBD to the river, to support residential, social and economic activity on or near the riverbanks,” he says.

“We have this beautiful river, which is central to our identity, and we'd like to discuss en-hancing this special aspect of our city with our community."

Residents urged to have their say on fl ood protection

Wainuiomata runners headed out to Waikanae last month to compete in the Wellington Center Cross-country Championships.

After a week of cold wet weather, the course was very wet and muddy under-foot leading to a few injuries within other clubs and some very challenging running for all.

Runners from around the Wellington region com-peted in age-group races over a challenging course, including two tough hills per lap.

Times were a lot slower than last year, with most athletes adding at least half a minute to their 2014 time because of the amount of mud they had to negotiate.

The event is a selection race for the National Cham-pionships being held in Christchurch on the 1st of August, so athletes would be looking for a good result in order to be chosen for the Wellington team.

Four of our athletes placed in the top ten in their grade, with yet another close race in the Masters Women grade with Georgina Cox and Nikki Braniff-Jones both with times around 29 minutes 40 seconds.

This is the last cross-coun-try race for 2015 as we now head into the road racing part of the season. Our fi rst event is the club champion-ships in two weeks followed by the Wellington road Championships which we host on Waterworks Road.

This event also brings out the best of Wellington run-ners, trying to gain selection for Nationals.

Earlier in July we had seven athletes travel to Taupo to compete in the North Island Cross-country Championships.

All of those that competed on the tough course last year improved their times convincingly, and Nikki Braniff-Jones finished in the top ten in her age group.

Stewart Clement, Warwick Pettigrew and Alan Carman in the masters men 8km race.

The Wainuiomata Hockey Club had another successful game on Sunday, defeating Toa 3-1 away at Elsdon Park.

In what was a very physical game, the girls controlled their opposition and now move on to a top of the table clash this Sunday.

They travel up to Paraparaumu to play second placed Kapiti, a game that could be a preview for a future fi nal.

The High School side went down 4-0 to top of the table Paraparaumu

College, although they did have some good moments in the game.

There has been a major milestone in Junior Hockey as the year 7/8 side now scoring 100 goals this season thanks to a 10-0 thumping of St Orans, Caelyn Kaiwai was named player of the day.

The year 3/4 side went down to Hutt 1 4-2 once again Jaylyn Rawiri was one of the players of the day alongside Reihana Te Rauna.

The year 5/6 side also went down to Hutt 1.

Sports with Aaron Meredith

The biggest news in the sporting world at this current time is Racism, something that should never be a part of society let alone sport.Examples of Racism in sport are many, cur-rently Aussie Rules player Adam Goodes is protesting the fact that he gets called an ape most times he plays. In Christchurch a player playing in the Canterbury Club Metro rugby nals was abused so much by supporters that he left the eld in tears. Now I know it is a terrible thing to say, but I am not surprised that this happened in Christchurch, a place where to some people, race relations has struggled to get passed the 1800’s, no matter what council and government o cials say to make you believe di erent. In New Zealand, we pride ourselves on being the most open when it comes to dealing with di erent races, we welcome people of all races and religion into our home, that’s how we are. That is until you step onto the sporting eld, when we seem to think it is ok to say things that are racist, in ‘The heat of the battle’ you can say anything you want, well I’m going to say you can, to a point. Why should we lower ourselves to bring-ing someone’s race into a game of sport, it doesn’t matter if your skins white, brown, black, tan or whatever, we are all the same, we are all people.I grew up in Wainuiomata, I went to school with people of every race and religion you could think of.Samoans, Asians, Maori, Tongans, Fijians, Africans, Europeans, Americans, it didn’t matter who, they were always welcomed into our community, they always will be.It disgusts me that some people are racist, this isn’t the 1960’s or 70’s, we should be well passed this terrible form of society.I’ll leave you with this, if it wasn’t for Islanders or Maori’s, would the All Blacks be as good as they are today?Or do some people just have double standards when it comes to people of di erent races?

Racism does not belong in the world, let alone sport

Home semi nal for First XVThe Wainuiomata High School First XV hosts Onslow College in the Premier Three Semi nal at 1pm on Saturday. If they win this they will play in the nal on the August 17 at St Patricks Silverstream. In other games Wainuiomata 2 plays Onslow 2 at 11.30am in a quarter nal matchup. The Under 15’s are playing at HIBS at 11.30am, the Under 65’s have the bye.The Wainuiomata Girls are playing at Porirua on Thursday in a Semi nal match.

Warriors playing in WellingtonAfter the Wainuiomata Rugby League plays in the grand final, a much smaller game takes place as the Warriors play at Westpac Stadium. The game kicks o at 5pm, but there will be games all afternoon including the U20’s and the NSW Cup side.So if your not doing anything on Saturday afternoon head to Westpac Stadium, support the Lions and then support the Warriors.Tickets are available online.

The Wainuiomata Womens Rugby Team are division two champions, after easily disposing of Poneke 49-0.

The side was in control of the game since kickoff, and never looked like conceding a point, let alone losing the game.

The weather put a dampen on many Wainuiomata at-tacks, if it was dry the score

could easily have been 80 or 90 points.

All the team played well in the game, but mentions must go to hooker Alice Soper who was threating to score all day without quite getting there.

F la n ker Jack ie Pa tea showed why she is a former Black Fern, breaking tackles at will, and the backline was slick all day despite the ter-rible conditions.

There was also a strong

amount of support at the club for the girls, who tend to play in front of a crowd that is less than the amount of players on the fi eld.

They put on a show for the few hundred at William Jones Park, who were right behind the team from kickoff.

This means that Wainuio-mata wrapped up the second round unbeaten, scoring nearly 600 points and only conceding 12 throughout the

seven games played.This includes a 188-0 demo-

lition job of Johnsonville the week prior to the fi nal.

Things are looking promis-ing for the team for next year providing the core of the team and the coaching staff sticks around.

In other games for the club, The Reserves defeated Paremata-Plimmerton by 36-12 to lift them to second on their table.

Wainuiomata prepare to get behind your team, as they have qualifi ed for the Wellington Rugby League Grand Final to be held at Westpac Stadium this Saturday.

The team has qualifi ed thanks to a 30-24 vic-tory over the Randwick Kingfi shers away at Nae-nae Park, in what was an entertaining game.

Things did not look good

for the Lions as they were easily outplayed in the fi rst half and headed into the break 20-4 behind, before a massive second half effort saw the team get over the line.

Try scorers included Fredirich Kiel and Joshua Kohika who both scored a try each, Joseph Oti and Murphy Allbright scored two each plus Allbright kicked three goals.

Next week they move on to play the Te Aroha

Eels, who have been the competition leaders from the start of the season.

Last time the two teams met, Te Aroha just held on for a 10-8 victory, al-though this was at The Eels home ground, the fi nal will be held at neutral venue.

The game will be held at Westpac Stadium at 12.30pm on as a curtain raiser to the Warriors game that is being played there this Saturday.

The team would like as much support as possible from everyone that can make it on Saturday.

In the only other game this week, the two senior one sides battled it out at Wise Park, with the Indigenous Lions running away with a 30-8 victory.

This means they are at home this Saturday at 3pm against the Randwick Kingfi shers in the elimi-nation semifi nal.

The Lions are off to the fi nal at the stadium

UNLEASHING THE BACKS: Acacia Claridge sums up her options in the nal on Saturday.
