Centre plans 15 logisticsparks in India

New Delhi/June 28, 2016: To reduce transportation cost and minimisepollution, the government plans to set up 15 logistics park in cities with highfreight movement at an investment of about Rs 33,000 crore. The proposal isconsequent to the announcement made by roadtransport and highways minister Nitin Gadkari thatreducing logistics cost can boost the country’s exports1.5 times, besides leading to faster economicdevelopment. “It is proposed to develop logistics parks in15 cities with highest freight movement (covering morethan 40 per cent of the total road freight movement inIndia) in Phase I of the programme,” the road transportand highways ministry said in its proposal. It said theexpected development of logistics parks in the top 15nodes will require capital investment of Rs 33,000crores. This includes asoft-touch panel that guides the user intuitivelythrough the machine control menu as well asmaterial-friendly transport of the film in themachine. Its throughput is higher and its floorspace is reduced by more than 40 % compared toprevious types of this machine series. GregorBaumeister, who manages the palletising andpackaging technology business group at BEUMERGroup in Beckum since October 2015, explains:"There had not been a packaging system forpallets on the market, that did not require theoperator to open the film with a cutting tool."

here is an old saying inwarehousing that states, “Ifthere is available space, someone will eventually fill it,”usually sooner rather than later. Therefore, it is not uncommonfor a warehouse to be full evenduring slow periods.A warehouse will normally runout of space due to rapidgrowth, seasonal peaks, largediscount buying, plannedinventory builds formanufacturing shutdowns, facility consolidation, or even aslow sales period.

Generally there are threetypes of space deficienciesthat occur in a warehousethat are as below:

Too Much of the RightProductAn abundance of theright product appears positivein terms of customer serviceand order fulfillment goals, asproduct is readily available tofill customer orders. Yet, as thesales staff and buyers celebratemaking customers happy byfulfilling every order 100%,the warehouse operates wellbelow established productivityand safety standards. A lookinto this type of warehouse willreveal pallets of product storedin aisles, stacked in dock areas, placed on rack end caps, ormultiple SKUs of productmixed in single bin locations.Blocked visibility creates safetyhazards, lack of ease inlocating

T

Page 19: Warehouse Management July'16 Edition

inventory, decreased labor productivity andmultiple handlings of product. The upside isthat these products usually move quicklythrough the warehouse and space problemsexist for only several weeks.

Too Much of the Wrong ProductHaving too much of the wrong product isoften an indicator that sales projectionsand/or production planning were incorrect, but it also frequently indicates that thewarehouse is not managing inventory levelsor obsolete product properly. Unlike havingtoo much of the right product, whereinventory peaks can be handled with extralabor, having the wrong product usuallyresults in inventory remaining untouched inthe warehouse for months and even years.A good example of this lack of inventorymanagement occurred at a mid-sizedconsumer goods supplier.

Poorly Utilized Warehouse SpaceThis condition is usually caused by steadygrowth, changing storage requirements(change in product mix) and ever increasingservice requirements. Poorly utilized space is

a common occurrence that happens in all warehouses occasionally and is non-exclusive of the inventory type or storageconditions in the warehouse.Traditionally, warehouses are built andequipped to handle projected volumes, aset number of products and limited unitloads. Then they are expected to adjust tocustomer demands as well as be moreefficient over time. To accomplish theseconflicting goals, warehouses generallyaccept long-term penalties to accomplishshort-term goals like creating customizedfloor-ready merchandise for end-capdisplays, hand-pricing a key customer’smerchandise at the piece level, or creatingmixed loads to simplify customer processingwhen goods traditionally ship in full case orfull pallet quantities. All of these customization steps takevaluable floor space and labor from primarywarehouse functions. Other commoninstances of poor space utilization includelow vertical space utilization, wide aisles(over nine feet), and multiple products insingle bin locations and/or partial unit loadsbeing stored in full unit load locations.

These types of problems should be addressed withphysical layout and workstation design changes. For a start, the choice of racking is often complexowing to the wide range of stored items andstorage options. The latter include the mostcommon racking system, adjustable palletracking (APR), mobile, live or flow, drivein/drive through, push-back, post pallet blockstacking and a variety of automated solutions, like mini stackers. Choosing the most appropriatepallet racking and shelving system for yourwarehouse operation’s needs is a complex task. Itneeds to be done at the same time you decide onyour preferred materials handling equipment, giving careful consideration to the dynamics, shape, fragility and so on of the products to bestored. Fortunately there are various warehousesimulation tools available to help test the pros andcons of the different storage solutions on offer.Choosing racking and shelving might seem likethe simplest part of planning a warehouse, but ifyou don’t get it right it could be very costly; youcould end up spending far more on running thewarehouse than is necessary.Installing high density racking can deliversubstantial carbon benefits by helping reducecarbon consumption. The general consensus isthat the future of warehousing will be driven bythe “carbon challenge,” which will prompt thespread of, for example, local sites using electricdelivery vehicles serving in a 25-mile radius. Trends also suggest a fundamental shift awayfrom the ‘golden triangle’ national distributionmodel towards port-centric

logistics, partly to cope with thepredicted surge in container traffic asour new deep-water ports go live.Racking manufacturers are keenlyaware of the need to help clientscontain costs and meet carbontargets. Compared with VNAracking, an automated pallet storage, retrieval and sequencing solution canincrease storage density by 80%. Asingle workstation can control thewhole system, and pallet throughputis sharply raised. The cost of such automation is ofcourse high relative to conventionalAPR racking automation – withstorage solutions to match.served byforklifts. But as with operationsusing forklifts it is the running coststhat should take precedence inreaching your decision. The totalconstruction cost for an automatedsystem can be 30% less than abuilding to house a conventionalracking system. And by obtaining thedensest form of storage you will beminimising your energyconsumption and hence your carbongeneration. To cope with this efficiently, retailersare turning more to automation. Thefuture for warehousing ischallenging in so many ways, butundeniably it is a future thatfavours automation – with storagesolutions to match.

aterial handling equipmentencompasses a diverse range oftools, vehicles, storage units, appliances and accessoriesinvolved in transporting, storing, controlling, enumerating and protectingproducts at any stage ofmanufacturing, distributionconsumption or disposal.

Categories of MaterialHandling EquipmentThe four main categories ofmaterial handling equipmentinclude: storage, engineeredsystems, industrial trucks andbulk material handling.Storage and HandlingEquipment

Storage equipment is usuallylimited to non-automatedexamples, which are grouped inwith engineered systems.Storage equipment is used tohold or buffer materials during“downtimes,” or times whenthey are not being transported. These periods could refer totemporary pauses during long-term transportation or long-

term storage designed to allowthe buildup of stock. Themajority of storage equipmentrefers to pallets, shelves orracks onto which materials maybe stacked in an orderly mannerto await transportation orconsumption. Many companieshave investigated increasedefficiency possibilities instorage equipment by designingproprietary packaging thatallows materials or products ofa certain type to conserve spacewhile in inventory.

Examples of storage andhandling equipment include:• Racks, such as pallet racks,drive-through or drive-in racks,push-back racks, and slidingracks• Stacking frames• Shelves, bins and drawers• MezzaninesEngineered Systems

Engineered systems cover avariety of units that workcohesively to enable storageand transportation. They areoften automated. A goodexample of an engineered

system is an AutomatedStorage and Retrieval System, often abbreviated AS/RS,which is a large automatedorganizational structureinvolving racks, aisles andshelves accessible by a “shuttle”system of retrieval. The shuttlesystem is a mechanized cherrypicker that can be used by aworker or can perform fullyautomated functions to quicklylocate a storage item’s locationand quickly retrieve it for otheruses.

Other types of engineeredsystems include:• Conveyor systems• Robotic delivery systems• Automatic guided vehicles(AGV)

Industrial TrucksIndustrial trucks refer to thedifferent kinds oftransportation items andvehicles used to move materialsand products in materialshandling. These transportationdevices can include small hand-operated trucks, pallet-jacks,and various kinds of forklifts. These trucks have a variety ofcharacteristics to make themsuitable for differentoperations. Some trucks haveforks, as in a forklift, or a flatsurface with which to lift items, while some trucks require aseparate piece of equipment forloading. Trucks can also bemanual or powered lift andoperation can be walk or ride, requiring a user to manuallypush them or to ride along onthe truck. A stack truck can beused to stack items, while a

non-stack truck is typically used fortransportation and not for loading.

There are many types of industrialtrucks:• Hand trucks• Pallet jacks• Pallet trucks• Walkie stackers• Platform trucks• Order picker• Sideloader• Many types of AGV

Bulk Material Handling EquipmentBulk material handling refers to thestoring, transportation and control ofmaterials in loose bulk form. Thesematerials can include food, liquid, orminerals, among others. Generally, these pieces of equipment deal withthe items in loose form, such asconveyor belts or elevators designed tomove large quantities of material, or inpackaged form, through the use ofdrums and hoppers.

• Conveyor belts• Stackers• Reclaimers• Bucket elevators• Grain elevators• Hoppers• Silos

Technology trends shaping thefuture of material handlingWho would have anticipated thosedevelopments at the beginning of thiscentury? That may be the question we areasking about material handlingtechnologies 10 years from now asmany of the disruptive technologiesthat are changing our society maketheir way into warehouses anddistribution centers. "Big data," theInternet of Things, mobility, the tech-savvy millennial generation, advanced

robotics, autonomous vehicles, and alternative energy sources areall going to influence howproducts move through the supplychain. And that is probably goingto happen sooner than you think. That's because these technologiesand trends will play anincreasingly important role in thecontinual effort to drive costs outof the supply chain and increasethe speed and predictability ofproduct movement. Materialhandling managers who begin todevelop strategies for thesetechnologies today will be in thebest position to transform theirdisruptive power into competitiveadvantages for their organizationsin the future.

These trends are alreadyfinding their way into businessapplications in a number ofindustries that will serve asdevelopment laboratories andproving grounds for the nextgeneration of material handlingtechnology. The automotiveindustry, with its work ondriverless vehicles, will certainlyhave a significant influence onmaterial handling. But anumber of other industries—agriculture, aviation, medical, consumer productsand the military—are alsoadopting disruptivetechnologies in ways that canserve as a model for materialhandling applications

educe Warehouse LiabilityCareful planning and adedication to safety are toppriorities for keepingwarehouse workers injury-free.Keeping workers safe andreducing warehouse liability isdependent upon proper andthorough employee training. There are someWarehouse Ergonomics• Equip packing stations withimpact absorbing, anti-slipindustrial floor mats to relievethe stress placed on employees’knees, shins, and ankles whenthey work entire shifts standingin one place• Prevent musculoskeletaldisorders by opting to moveheavy loads with mechanicalequipment, instead of manuallylifting them.• Make sure that floors are keptfree of spills and trippinghazards.• Prevent eyestrain and errorsby providing workers withoverhead lighting that isadequate for all operations.Customize different areas ofthe facility with task lighting asneeded.• Never twist your body whilecarrying a load – turning yourtorso in a situation like this canlead to back injuries. If youneed to change direction, turnyourself by shifting your feet insmall steps.

• If a load pushes the size orweight limit of what you cancomfortably lift, don’t riskhurting yourself – get help andteam-lift the materials instead.• When lifting, keep your backin a natural position, and relyon your legs to do the actuallifting.• Lifting from floor or shoulderlevel is a common cause ofinjury; prevent employee frominjuring themselves byarranging storage in such a waythat these types of lifting tasksare reduced or eliminated.

Safely Storing Materials• Make sure that stacked loadsare straight and even, to preventthem from toppling over.• Heavier loads should bestored on lower or middleshelves, so that they create acenter of gravity for yourshelving units, as opposed toleaving them top-heavy.• When removing objects fromshelves, only do so one item at atime.• Keep the aisles and areassurrounding your shelf systemsfree from obstruction.

Forklift Safety• Never allow anyone who isunder the age of 18 and/or notspecifically trained in forkliftoperation to operate a forklift.• When driving a forklift, neverexceed 5mph, and always slow

down in areas that haveslippery floors or are likely tobe congested with people, materials, or other transportvehicles.• Properly maintain forklifts, and always remember to do awalk-around check forhazardous conditions beforeyou operate one.• Never operate a damaged ordefective forklift until it hasbeen adequately repaired andproven safe for use.• Make sure that aisles andloading docks that are traversedby forklifts are kept clear, allowing plenty of space for aforklift to safely maneuverthrough.• Require all forklift operatorsto utilize the manufacturer-installed seatbelts.• Keep your warehouse wellventilated to allow thedissipation of forklift fumesand carbon monoxide, andensure that employees are fullytrained on the dangers ofinhaling excessive amounts

of forklift exhaust.• Never attempt to lift, stack,or transport loads that exceed theforklift’s weight capacity.• Maintain a zero-tolerancepolicy for “stunt driving,” racing, and any other forklift-relatedhorseplay.• Provide proper PPE (likerubber gloves and safety glasses)at forklift battery chargingstations, to protect workers in theevent that they are exposed tobattery acid or other chemicals.

Loading Dock Safety• Place visual warnings like signsand strips of brightly coloredtape along dock edges to preventemployees from accidentallywalking off.• Never allow forklifts to back upall the way to a loading dock’sedge.• Whenever a dock plate is used, make sure that it’s well secured, and verify that its weightcapacity can safely accommodatethe load you intend to move overit.

Conveyor Safety• Regularly inspect conveyors toensure that they’re undamagedand in safe condition.• Make sure that all pinch pointsare well guarded.• Ensure that there is properlighting and sufficient workspacein the vicinity of the conveyor.• Tailor a lockout plan for yourconveyor system, so it can remainsafely shut down in the event of amalfunction or repair. Trainemployees in the procedure.

General Warehouse Safety Tips• Floors must be kept clear ofspilled liquids and clutter thatcould cause employees to slip ortrip.• If power cords or hoses must berun across walkways or openareas, cover them heavy-duty cordcovers to prevent tripping hazards,as well as to protect the cablesfrom run-over damage.• Set reasonable time requirementsfor task completion – rushing canlead to accidents and injuries.• Prevent worker fatigue byensuring that employees doingphysical work receive an adequatenumber of rest breaks throughouttheir shifts.• Have set lockout/tagoutprocedures in place toprevent employees from beinginjured during the repair ofdamaged machinery and electricalpanels.• Keep the warehouse wellventilated at all times.• Depending upon the averagetemperature of your facility, trainemployees on proper hydration, appropriate clothing, and otherbest practices for working in hotor cold environments.

s e-commerce continues itsrapid growth into virtuallyevery market sector, retailersare anxious to expand theirpresence online to capture thismarket share.

E-COMMERCECHALLENGESFor decades, consumerproducts have been distributedto retail stores in bulk, viapallet loads and cases. Now,online ordering is pushingbrick-and-mortar retailersbeyond this traditional supplychain infrastructure.Traditional fulfillment—encompassing receiving,putaway/storage, picking, transport through thedistribution center (DC),

sortation, value-added services, packing, and shipping—is apoor option for handling theneeds of e-commerce. Tocompete in this virtual arena, picking, packing, and shippingsingle items and small volumeorders to consumers is the nameof the game. Orders requiredelivery to customers—notweekly or bi-weekly as withretail stores, but typicallywithin 24 to 48 hours.New Strategies: It’s a Store! It’s a Site! It’s a Warehouse!

The methodology ofindependent logisticsconsultants permits anobjective examination of all e-commerce options, helpingboth parties determine

underlying costs and design forfacilities, automation, and laborwithin the 3PL. Consultantssize the facility based on theretailer's requirements, theanticipated level of operatorcost, and what the 3PL plans toinvest, factoring in theoptimum level of automation.E-commerce vendors andtraditional merchants staketheir claims in an evolvinglandscape.E-commerce continues toreshape the retail world. Brick-and-mortar stores aren'tdisappearing. But the growth ofonline shopping is forcing storeowners to rethink the way theydo business in order tonegotiate the new terrain.Companies that sell entirelyonline are also shifting strategy, responding to consumer desirefor more flexible shoppingoptions. Many of those changeswill affect the way retailersmanage their supply chains.A complementary strategy—shipping e-commerce ordersfrom fulfillment centers tostores for customer pickup—also offers an advantage: Itdrives customers into stores, where they're likely to buyextra items. That strategyalso demands the rightcombination of processes, technology, and training. It isaxiomatic that in an e-commerce age speed andaccuracy of product deliveryare key to survival and thatonly varying degrees ofautomated handling canachieve the necessary targets toretain high volume customerbusiness, who now expectsame-day delivery and will

very shortly be getting it. Theproblem, however, is anoutdated idea that automation ishard to justify owing to highinitial costs, long paybacktimes, inflexibility andconcerns over maintenanceissues from equipmentsuppliers whose longevity maybe questionable. Theseconcerns, however, should havebeen allayed by the advances intechnology, scalability andflexibility which have broughtdown hardware and softwarecosts, and made the kit morereliable and flexible, thuscutting the risks of sharply-changing businessenvironments. Yet some areslow to be convinced, and indelaying they court an even

greater risk – permanent loss ofbusiness to rivals who promisesame-day, accurate deliveries. The bane of any e-commerceretailing business is the highcost of product returns andhere, again, it is automation thatcan come to the rescue, although returns will never beentirely eliminated. Whenreturns come back it is essentialthat they are inducted efficiently back into storage assoon as possible to be madeready for further sale. One ofthe key reasons for returns isinaccurate picking, based onerror-prone paper list picking.Investment in pick-to-light andvoice picking should bringthese errors almost down tozero. Other investments may beneeded to educate customers onhow to choose the right productat the first click. With e-commerce scythingaway conventional shoppingmodes, now is a good time tosee if one’s logistics model isup to scratch.

The importance of e-commerce is alsobehind some of theissues worrying thenetworks because themove from mostlycommercial deliveriesto a high proportionof business toconsumer deliveriesgenerated by onlineshipping has sharplychanged the way ofmany haulagecompanies and palletnetworks areexpected to operate

ith rapid progress of technology coupled withdemand for several products in rather largequantities has led to the development ofwarehouses in the outskirts of cities in India. Also as trade assumes an increasedimportance in daily life, warehouses becomeeven more important. In supply chain andlogistics sector, stock keeping units are atplaces according to their availability anddemand of the products that aremanufactured. Today, several companies andtrade associations share their warehousingspace. Warehouses are important in placeswhich have a high volume of trade whichwarehouses well serve this purpose. However, gone are the days of warehouses which facedseveral problems like leakage, temperature.Though many of these problems continue toexist, they have been addressed effectively. However, issues like cost of land, risingrentals, and several other issues continue toperturb the logistics sector.Unlike traditional brick and mortarconstructions, PEB warehouses have severaladvantages and this is why they are being

fastly adopted in the new warehouses. Also, thedevelopment of e-commerce in the country has ledcompanies to have warehouses in the outskirts of citieswhere land is relatively cheaper and located at places thatmake them easily accessible from a logistics point ofview.PEBs have gained wide accpetance in warehouses andexperts are drawing on this. Owing to their functionalbenefits and advantages PEBs are a choice that clients gowith. Experts say that PEBs keep up with the times andthis is a fact to reckon with. As Infrastructureconstruction across the country is combining speed, economy, safety, strength and aesthetics at awe inspiringlevels, steel structures, until now a primary foundationelement, have risen as complete solutions in constructionprojects for various structural requirements. India isgrowing fast as an economy for pre-engineeredbuildings (PEBs) as it is witnessing a boom in theinfrastructure sector. Structural steel buildings orPEBs are addressing parameters including finishes, environment control and life cycle with a panachederived from product innovation and technologyadvancement While the application of PEBs has a widepotential, the concept is recognized and preferred

in the industrial construction segment.Add to that the reduced time tocompletion with the benefit of quality, and there is recipe for success. "PEB isgetting its due credit as a favorablealternative construction methodology inIndia today. More sectors are realizingthe benefits of metal over brick andmortar. The scope of metal/steelbuildings is very vast for the Indianmarket. PEB proves to be relevant andbeneficial to several constructionverticals including warehousing, infrastructure, oil & gas refineries aswell as group housing," feels MrPandey. "The advantages of having asteel structure or building overtraditional concrete are far too many.Primarily, speed and quality ofconstruction are the top two benefits.Steel buildings are fire, quake andcyclone resistant – hence from a safetyand longevity perspective, thesebuildings are timeless" he adds.PEBs are suitable even in ecologicallysensitive areas or geographically remotesites like hilly regions. The scope forintegrating other suitable constructionmaterials like glass of course, reallywide.

Use of steelSteel as a material with high strength perunit mass, has an advantage inconstructing structures to have large

column-free space. An industrialwarehouse is a storage building andis usually configured as singlestorey steel structure with orwithout mezzanine floors. Thedesigning of industrial warehouseincludes designing of the structuralelements as it consists of raftersystems or roof truss, columns, purlins or girts, gantry girder andits accessories etc.“Steel is an alloyof iron and carbon that is widelyused in construction and otherapplications because of its hightensile strength and low cost,”Frames of pre-engineered buildingsare made from an extensiveinventory of standard steel platesstocked by the PEB manufacturer.PEB frames are normally taperedand often have flanges and webs ofvariable thicknesses and depthalong the individual member. In regular/conventional steelbuildings mill produced hot rolledsections (beams/columns) are used. The size of each member is selectedon the basis of the maximuminternal stress (bending moment) inthe member. Since a hot rolledsection has a constant depth manyparts of the members are overdesigned. Advantages offered byPEB have made it more suitable andpreferable method for buildingwarehouses. In current marketscenario, more than 80 per cent ofwarehouses are being built withPEB which has taken over theconventional mode of construction.

omething is happening in the world of materials handlingautomation. Just look at the numbers. While the industryhas not yet recovered to its pre-recession peaks, both theconveyor and automatic guided vehicle (AGV) sectorsposted impressive year-over-year growth numbers. The traditional functions of a warehouse are well known.Unlike its predecessors, however, the modern warehouse isan assemblage of highly evolved automation technologies, making it a core part of the supply chain.Today's warehouse activities include cross docking, palletizing, kitting, tagging, and identifying products, aswell as storing them in the most time- and space-efficientmanner possible. As a result, warehouse automation nowhas a direct bearing on supply chain efficiency.Major warehouse automation trends, a look at the tools itoffers to help companies reduce cost and speed productflows has broad implications for warehouses in general.Robots Robots play a major role in the materials handlingsystems

AS/RS SystemsAS/RS systems save labor, are 99.9-percent accurate, anddo not damage product, These computer-controlledsystems provide instant access to a tremendous amount ofinformation, which warehouse

and logistics managers can retrieve through web links.

Layer forming palletizers Layer forming palletizers are often used in high-speedapplications, and in conjunction with handling bagswhen pattern quality is important.Forklifts. Automated warehouse systems typically useforklifts to load trucks, but sometimes usecounterbalanced trucks to move product received fromthe outside, or if the manufacturing facility is notcoupled to the warehouse. These trucks are usuallyequipped with RF equipment so the truck operator cancommunicate information back to the WarehouseManagement System (WMS).

Transfer cars. Companies use transfer cars toconsolidate multiple pickup or dropoff locations—suchas palletizing lines—into one or two in-feed lines to anAS/RS. RFID. RFID can be implemented at the pallet level, case level, or unit level. The medium to long-term trendis to have RFID tags at the unit level, so every item aconsumer purchases can be tracked. This is still fairlycost prohibitive, but most industry experts agree thatunit-level RFID tagging will continue to grow.RFID readers can be easily integrated into any AS/RS

to identify pallets and the product on apallet. This data can be used later as theproduct moves through the rest of thesupply chain.Pallets. Plastic pallets continue to grow inpopularity. As they become moreautomation friendly, they are easier to moveon conveyers. Though more expensive topurchase than wooden pallets, when used ina captive system, plastic pallets hold upmore effectively and cut costs in the longrun. Plastic pallets are also used often infood applications where cleanliness is animportant issue.

MEASURING EFFECTIVENESSReducing cost and product processing timeis the goal of an automated warehouse."Unfortunately some automated warehousesystems do not have the necessary quality tohandle the work cycles they are burdenedwith," "Companies tend to view thesesystems negatively when they createproblems."Because there are serious quality differencesbetween AS/RS systems, it is critical to buythe highest-quality systemAutomation is changing paradigms intraditional warehouse operations, starting inDCs across the global supply chain.

A LOGICAL SOLUTIONHow do distribution and e-commercefacilities keep up with year-end demand, while also maintaining inventory balance inthe company's operating supply chain? In today’s fast-changing retail-industryenvironment, warehouse automation can bea surprisingly powerful tool for meetingnew supply-chain challenges head on andusing the supply chain to create competitiveadvantage. The potential benefits ofwarehouse automation exist throughout thesupply-chain network. Consider theseexamples of benefits at three key points inthe network:• Warehouse. Dramatically improvedutilization of storage space reduces the needfor new construction as greater warehouse

capacity becomes needed, andfacilitates centralization ofwarehouse operations and closing ofbuildings.

• TransportationThe ability to assemble denser palletcubes through automation meansmore tightly packed trucks andlower average shipping costs peritem, reducing transportation costsby up to 10 percent.• Store Backroom. Store-specificpallets (assembled to reflect thelayout of a particularBeyond such networkimprovements, warehouseautomation can be used to open upnew strategic options and initiativesfor retailers. For example, automation can enable growth byallowing a distribution center toservice more stores and increaseproduct offerings.Reducing cycle time throughwarehouse automation is anotherstrategic benefit. By speeding up thequeuing and batch-planning, order-picking and packing, andtransportation processes, automationcan dramatically reduce order-to-delivery cycle times. This improvedcycle time in turn reduces inventory, improves fill rates, minimizes lostsales that can reduce customersatisfaction and loyalty, and can eveneliminate the need to maintaindistribution center stock altogether.

Finally, automation can be a keylever for strategic growth and isparticularly well suited to helpunlock the value of retail e-commerce. Traditionally, e-commerce has presented dauntingproblems associated withcomplexity, cost per order, andcustomer responsiveness, andautomation can mitigate some ofthese challenges.

he following sections explorethe seven technology trendsthat may have the biggestimpact on the future ofwarehouse management.

1. "Big data" and analyticsOne of the most commondefinitions of "big data" is datathat exceeds the processingcapacity of conventionaldatabase systems. In the contextof warehouse management, bigdata includes the processesrequired to aggregate, inspect, clean, transform, and modeldata with the goal ofdiscovering useful information, suggesting conclusions, andsupporting decisionmaking. With the continuingdigitization of information andprocesses, the application of bigdata and the analytics andmodeling.

2. The Internet of ThingsThe Internet of Thingsdescribes the sensors and data-communication technologybuilt into physical objects thatenable them to be tracked, coordinated, or controlled

across a data network or via theInternet. While a contributor tothe big data trend, the Internetof Things is distinct in that itrepresents direct machine-to-machine communication andcoordination, while big datagenerally encompasses datafrom a variety of sources thatare consolidated for humananalysis.Imagine what this kindof connectivity and intelligencecould accomplish in thewarehouse. It would take all thedisparate systems andequipment—conveyors, robots, automated storage and retrievalsystems, automatic guidedvehicles (AGVs), forklifts, battery charging stations, dockequipment, pick carts, voicepicking systems, lighting, andheating, ventilation, and airconditioning (HVAC) systems—and tightly couple them towarehouse control, labor, transportation, order, andcustomer managementsystems.

3. Mobile technologyMobile technology refers to theuse of tablets, smartphones, andother handheld or wearable

32 Warehouse Management JulyAug. 2016 www.behlmedia.net

devices for communication andinformation. One out of sevenpeople globally now ownssmartphones or tabletcomputers.Mobile technology isquickly penetrating the businessrealm. Tablets are already replacingfixed-mounted terminals in lawenforcement, agriculture, andaviation; they are just starting to beused in warehouses and distributioncenters by managers and otherpersonnel who don't want to bedeskbound but still need to deliverreports and information. Technicianswho service forklifts and automatedmaterial handling equipment arealso using them for fast, convenientaccess to information ontroubleshooting, repairs, and workorders. As material handling operationsincrease their use of analytics andautomation, mobile technology willemerge as the primary platform fordisplaying data. With mobiletechnology, warehouse managerswill have access to a wealth of data, including equipment status andperformance reports, wherever theymay be. With more warehousesoperating 24 hours a day, seven daysa week, this

T

Page 33: Warehouse Management July'16 Edition

will allow managers to trackperformance and respond toproblems around the clock.

4. The tech-savvy workforceThe prevalence of mobiletechnology in everyday life ismaking the workforce inwarehouses and distributioncenters comfortable andfamiliar with technology. Thegeneration entering theworkforce now will expect theequipment they operate toprovide an experience that issimilar to their engagementwith technology in their cars orwith their smartphones. Whilenot a "technology trend" in thetrue sense of that phrase, thechanges that will occur in thematerial handling workforce inthe next 10 years qualify as adisruptive trend because thisgeneration of workers has beenso deeply influenced bytechnology. These types ofapplications could find theirway into warehouses anddistribution centers.

5. Advanced roboticsThe technologies discussed tothis point have beenfocused primarily on makingthe warehouse workforce—from senior managers toforklift operators to orderpickers—more productive. Thenext two trends, advancedrobotics and autonomousvehicles, automate manualtasks. This is an importantdevelopment in the use ofrobotics in material handling.Material handling taskstypically have been too variableto make them good candidates

for robotics. Unlikemanufacturing, where productsmove down an assembly lineand can be precisely positionedfor each operation, products ina warehouse typically aredifferent sizes and shapes andmay not be positioned inexactly the same way orlocation each time they arehandled.

6. Autonomous vehiclesWhile sometimes usedsynonymously, there is animportant distinction betweendriverless and autonomousvehicles in the warehouse.Autonomous vehicles aredriverless, but not all driverlessvehicles are autonomous.Autonomous vehiclesare capable of making decisionsin response to theirenvironment. Driverlessvehicles, such as automaticguided vehicles (AGVs), arecontrolled from outside thevehicle or are limited to aprogrammed path. The AGVs used in warehousestoday typically followpreplanned routes and can'tnavigate around obstacles. When obstacles areencountered, an AGV simplystops in its tracks. Humanintervention is required toremove the obstacle and restartthe AGV. These situations arecommonplace in warehousesand distribution centers, andthey cause congestion anddisruption.

7. New Energy ResourcesOpportunities to reducewarehouse energy costs willemerge in at least three areas.

On the facility level, lightingcan represent a significant amount ofthe total electricity cost forwarehouses and distribution centers.Skylights and occupancy-sensing"smart" lighting solutions, includinglow-energy lighting, are becomingmore commonplace in warehousesand distribution centers. The large, flat rooftop surfaces typical ofwarehouses and distribution centersare ideal locations for solar panelsthat can be used to supplement powerrequirements.

In the next 10 years, theintelligence designed intomaterial handlingequipment will growexponentially, as willconnectivity betweensystems and theirenvironment. Tech-savvyworkers will operateintelligent machines, working alongside robotsand autonomous forklifts inhighly automatedoperations. Every activitywill leave a digital footprintthat will be consolidated, aggregated, and analyzed todrive continuousimprovement. The resultwill be supply chains thatare more efficient, morereliable, and allow productto be moved at lower cost
