Watson TDM is the access platform for the most

demanding business customers. High revenue

TDM services like leased lines for voice and data

as well as mobile base station backhaul are

the main target applications of this proven plat-

form. The inherent nature of TDM combined

with the quality of the Watson TDM family guar-

antees assured quality of service. Watson TDM’s

strengths are very low latency, symmetrical

up-and downstream combined with high reliability.

A dedicated link guarantees the highest security.

The Watson TDM portfolio offers exceptional

modularity. A wide range of interfaces and

configuration options allows easy interoperability

with other network devices. The products are

designed to meet the needs of ILECS, CLECS

and mobile operators. The modularity and

scalability of the Watson TDM platform allows the

use of voice and data transmission at utilities

(power, water, gas) and railway operators. Point-

to-point stand-alone installations as well as

multistage chain installations using regenerators

are implemented worldwide in such environ-

ments.

Leased Line Services and Network Architecture

Corporate Data Networks – TDM or EthernetCorporate data networks for national and multinational companies rely on leased lines using either nx64, E1 or Ether-net interfaces. This is one of Watson TDM’s main applica-tions. Scalability in terms of speed ranges from 200 Kbps up to 22.8 Mbps, resulting in 45.6 Mbps aggregated through-put. Watson TDM products are fully wire-speed and full-duplex (symmetrical speed).

Corporate Data Networks – Ethernet over TDMThe Watson TDM product line offers flexibility, using Ethernet interfaces at the customer’s site while transporting the data via TDM-backbones. A spe-cial built-in function allows cus-tomers to convert Ethernet to TDM. Interoperability with all major brands of router vendors is assured. Inexpensive Ether-net interfaces at the customer’s site and straight connection to the in-house LAN are simplified.

Corporate Voice NetworksWatson TDM is designed for corporate voice networks con-necting PBXs to the public net-work. This application uses E1or fractional E1 interfaces pro-vided by Watson TDM. PSTN or ISDN is supported with full bandwidth (E1) or fractional bandwidth (fractional E1).

Data and Voice combinedThe Watson TDM portfolio of-fers modems with data and voice combination. Branches in corporate networks can be served by only one leased line providing data (router IP/Ethernet) and at the same time voice (PSTN, ISDN) to a PBX.Watson TDM offers a high flexibility in assigning band-width. There is no compromise on QoS. Voice and data never interfere with each other, even in overload situations.

Exceptional VersatilitySchmid products are renowned for their quality and lead to a high availability of services. Service level agreements (SLA)do not pose a risk for carrier business models but allow for high revenue. The opera-tional expenditure (OPEX) is very low.

Low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)Watson TDM products are easy to maintain. The low im-plementation and mainte-nance costs result in an excep-tional price-performance ratio and, over the long term, in a very attractive total cost of ownership (TCO).

ModularityThe system is modular, with a wide variety of configurations for legacy and hybrid services. A broad range of system components is available. Each of the components is excep-tionally flexible and can be adapted to specific needs simply by using command line or advanced management functions.

ScalabilityWatson TDM is scalable using different sizes of subracks, from one link up to thousands per location. The speed is scalable from 200 Kbps up to 22.8 Mbps per link.

PerformanceSchmid products offer the best reach within the industry, due to careful design and long term xDSL experience. Cus-tomers state that they use Schmid xDSL products exclu-sively, since no other brand comes even close in terms of performance and reach to copper lines.

ManageabilityAll products are manageable locally or remotely either using a Command Line Language (CLI) or the simple management protocol (SNMP). The Schmid Element Management Software offers a fully graphical user interface. This software is easy to use and offers a complete set of features.

Standard ComplianceThe Watson TDM product line is compliant with all common standards and regulations (ITU,ETSI, IEC, IEEE, ROHS, WEEE).

Enterprise ConnectivityThe modularity and scalability of the Watson TDM platform allow voice and data transmis-sion at companies. Several options are available: from E1, nx64 to multi-service, com-bining both in one modem. IP/Ethernet connectivity allows an aggregated throughput of up to 45.6 Mbps.

Utilities Watson TDM is successfully implemented at utilities (power/electricity, water, gas) and railway operators. Point-to-point stand-alone installations as well as multi-stage chain installations using regenerators are imple-mented worldwide. TDM or IP/Ethernet options with addi-tional add-drop features at each substation adapt perfectly to this segments needs.

Mobile Operator Special FeaturesIn many cases, distances to mobile base stations are very long, exceeding the limits of conventional DSL systems. Watson TDM offers multi-pair solutions to extend the reach. Regenerators, up to two (2-pair) and up to 8 (1-pair), extend it even further. Optional 1:1 protection switching pro-vides ultra-high reliable protec-tion against copper failure.

Mobile Operator ApplicationsWatson products are ideally suited for backhaul of 2G, 2.5G and 3G mobile base stations (GSM, UMTS, CDMA, WCDMA). Multiple E1 delivery in one product, mainly used for 2.5G and 3G mobile base stations, is simplified with Watson TDM.

System Components Watson TDM

CPE/NTUWatson tDM modems are avail-able in an elegant tabletop housing: e1, nx64 and ethernet in various combinations. 2 up to 8-wire SHDSL/SHDSL.bis models are available.

Subrackthe Watson subrack fits ideally for installations in 19-inch racks. this 12-slot subrack is suitable for any type of Watson tDM plug-in card and can optionally be equipped with an alarm relay unit and a SNMP management unit. Depth fits 30cm etSI or NebS racks.

Minirackthe Watson tDM minirack is a space-saving 19-inch subrack that occupies only 1U height in the rack. It is designed for a single plug-in card.

Tabletop Housingthe Watson tDM tabletop Housing is a space-saving micro-rack that occupies only 1U height and has a smaller width than the minirack, just about the size of a plug-in. It is designed for a single plug-in card.

Plug-In Cards (LTU)A wide variety of plug-in cards is available. All Watson tDM cards fit into the Watson tDM subrack, minirack or tabletop Housing. e1, nx64 and IP/eth-ernet Interfaces in various combinations and 2 up to 8-wire SHDLS/SHDSL.bis models are available.

RegeneratorA two-pair G.SHDSL regenera-tor is available for Watson tDM modems. It can either operate as two independent single-pair regenerators or as one re-generator for a two-pair system. Remote and local powering are supported. Several hous-ings in different IP classes for 1 up to 6 regenerator modules are available.

Network Managementthe entire Watson product range is manageable with WeM-2, Schmid’s SNMP-based man-agement software. WeM-2 is a client-server based manage-ment system with a graphical user interface, optimized for Watson modems. WeM-2 is available for Microsoft Windows and Sun Solaris oper-ating systems and can run parallel to HP OpenView.
