Looking Towards 5778

FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY

Rabbi Gerald C. Skolnik

With Rosh

Hashanah just a few short weeks away, I find myself—as I invariably do—contemplating what it is that I would hope for in the new year about to begin. The language and imagery of the magnificent High Holiday liturgy affords us myriad op-portunities to confront our own shortcomings, and the singularly personal spiritual dimension of the holidays is rooted in our willingness to confront those shortcomings, and resolve to work on them. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-pur are uniquely religious ex-periences, and the extent to which they are personally transformational is dependent

upon our willingness to “do the work.” What we hope for can-not come to pass without our own effort.

This year, along with the per-sonal challenges of the peni-tential season, I can’t help but think about our country and the state that it’s in. Ours is a society desperately in need of reflection, and the t’shuvah that goes with it. We are riven by deep and substantive divi-sions, many of them rooted in passionate political opinions, and the culture of what passes for political discourse far too often surpasses all bounds of reason and propriety. Though one can’t draw a straight line between them, it’s hard not to believe that the toxicity of how

we speak to each other cre-ates the climate that makes vio-

lence a frightening possibility, along the lines of what hap-pened in Alexandria.

The great temptation when one considers this subject is to assume that, because the problem is so large and so sys-temic, there is little we can do to impact it. After all, all of America is suffering from the political divide, and we here in the Northeast are clearly living a different American reality from our fellow countrymen in the heartland.

The truth is that, whether on matters purely personal or on more global issues like the state of American society, all transformative change must start with the still, small voice inside of us. There is no reward for worrying about our coun-try’s faults and imperfections if we bypass our own. We must

be sure that we are coming at these more global issues with clean hands and a pure heart, and as the liturgy reminds us relentlessly, none of us are faultless.

For me, the beauty of the High Holiday experience lies in our being together, in prayer, in song, and in longing. I look forward for seeking that still, small voice within me in your company, and in advance of Rosh Hashanah, may I wish you all a K’tivah Va’hatimah To-vah…. May you be inscribed, and sealed, in the Book of Life for a year of health, happiness, prosperity and peace.

UPCOMING EVENTS

NOTES FROM THE HAZZAN

Hazzan Henry R. Rosenblum The past 4 months have been a time of incredible na-chas for our family, begin-ning with Shi-

ra’s graduation from Rabbinical school and her ordination in May. Seeing her stand together with her classmates in the beautiful sanctuary of the Park Ave-nue Synagogue to receive their JTS Talli-tot brought smiles and more than a few tears to the families of these new Rabbis and Hazzanim. Five long years of study, work and growth had all paid off. And on a personal note, having the oppor-tunity to drape Shira in that Tallit and to offer her a personal blessing was truly the proverbial icing on the cake.

As you have heard me say before, just five weeks later Shira left for Israel to begin the trip of a lifetime as she repre-sented the United States in the Macca-biah games. It was amazing to witness this gathering of more than 10,000 ath-letes from 80 countries at the opening ceremony and to know that she was the first archer to ever represent the United States in this competition. We watched her compete in Netanya in the hot sun of summertime Israel, with tempera-tures exceeding 100 degrees. The cama-raderie was remarkable and the support that the athletes extended to each other was beautiful to behold. It was heart-warming to see her shoot both at 18 meters and 70 meters and to watch her

feel so good about what she was doing. Yes. A great nachas moment!

Upon returning to the States however, we experienced something that nearly made these two amazing events pale by comparison. Shira, Susan and I flew down to Jacksonville to help Shira get settled in her new home and new com-munity. At ordination they gave her the title of Rabbi and in Israel they wrote articles about the female Rabbi who was the American archer, but in Jacksonville we realized that now she is in fact Rabbi Rosenblum, the second Rabbi of the Jacksonville Jewish Center. She partici-pated in a funeral her first week there and was part of a Beit Din at a conver-sion the next week. She has already de-livered sermons, taught classes, hired an assistant for the work she will be doing in the Day School, and so much more. Seeing your child find her own niche and be appreciated and welcomed so warm-ly by a new community is amazing. Knowing that she is now also in the same community as Leora and Jesse and our granddaughters Rena and Dafna is just beyond words. Yes, these past few months have been the height of nachas.

As we prepare for the High Holidays it is my prayer that we all have moments of great spiritual and emotional fulfillment in the year ahead.

THE PRESIDENT’S PEN

Summer is my favorite season. Nothing beats a day at the beach, relaxing in a chair with warm sun-shine on face and my toes in the sand. Concerts in the parks, long walks on sultry nights or running through the streets of Forest Hills as the sun is rising, are annual summer rituals. Summer is also a time for handwriting long letters to children at camp or on teen tours, and checking the mailbox after a long day at work on the chance they felt the need to write back. Having just completed my 20th, and possibly last season of ‘letters to camp’, with most letters saved in big envelopes by child and by year, I realize the most documented parts of my life are the simple long days of summer. Prior to leaving for B’nai B’rith Perlman Camp in mid-June to serve as Assistant Judaics Director, my

youngest, Joshua

dragged out the camp letters. Not just his, but those saved by his sister Aliza, dating back to 2001. He was a bit surprised to read of new babies welcomed by our FHJC family over summers and which members we met along Route 17 as we all trekked back to the city from various camps in the Lake Como area on visiting day. Yes, FHJC news was always part of summer letters!

Though summer is certainly quieter at the Center than other times of the year, it is the best time to get an early start for the coming school year. There are changes in the leadership in both our award-winning schools for the coming year. Lynn Fisher and Iris Chomsky, familiar names and be-loved teachers to our nursery families for many years, are co-directors of our nurse-ry school. At the same time, we welcome Philip Dickstein to our FHJC family. Philip will be working with Lynn Lancaster, our Director of Congregational Learning, as Assistant Director of Religious School/Program Director. Philip brings his admin-istrative experience and love for Jewish learning to Forest Hills from his years in Day School and Congregational Schools.

Summer is also a good time to think out of the box. At our annual meeting in early June I shared my hopes that we can grow our volunteers while bringing together the many parallel communities that make up our kehillah – Religious School, Nursery School, regular shul attendees, to create a more vibrant, unified community. I noted that we had a growing number of newer young families joining us on Shabbat. We knew they valued coming together as a community in prayer, but what else did we know about them? Judy and David Zipkowitz, who have for years been wel-coming new members into their home to share a Shabbat meal, spent the early summer reaching out to the many new

people they met, and coordinated a ‘new young members’ gathering. On a Monday evening in July, we had about 20 mem-bers gather in my home to meet each other and share their early experiences at our synagogue. It was great to hear what we do well, where we can strive to im-prove and what they are looking for from their new Jewish home. So now we know more about them, and they know more about each other as well. As we move into fall, we look forward to helping them move some of their great suggestions into real events.

This summer has certainly been a bit busi-er for me than most, but it also has made for far more stimulating letters to camp. Should make for interesting reading in 2027!

With just a few weeks till Rosh Hashana, I wish everyone a Shana Tova u’Metuka – a sweet year that brings only the best to you and your family. I look forward to greeting everyone in person over the up-coming chagim.

ADULT EDUCATION The Adult Education Committee has several major annu-al events and a num-ber of

smaller ones every year. All of them take place after the Yom Tovim are over. So at this time we will just give you a “save the date” notice on our two biggest educa-tional opportunities that are on the calen-dar.

Our annual Shabbaton will be on Decem-ber 8 & 9, 2017. We are expecting to have a mix of our regular member teachers and a few members who are new to our Shab-baton teaching staff. It is always a very exciting weekend and we hope that you note the dates and plan to join us.

Our second major event is the annual Scholar-in-Residence weekend. This year we are pleased to announce that Rabbi Ed Feinstein, Rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom of Encino, and one of the leading Conserva-tive rabbis of this generation will be our Scholar. We can bring such a major schol-

ar into our shul because of a generous donation from the Sevin Family in memory of Malvin Peace Sevin. Please mark February 9 & 10, 2018, on your cal-endars.

Both events will include a Friday night dinner and an enhanced Kiddush on Satur-day. The dinner is a paid, reservation only event but we welcome everyone to join in the dessert buffet at the end so they can learn from our speakers. The enhanced Kiddush buffet will be sponsored and open to everyone so they can stay for the entire afternoon of learning.

If you love these programs, we ask that you consider becoming one of our spon-sors and help us cover the considerable costs associated with these events. This sponsorship allows the entire congrega-tion to participate, including parents with young children because we provide babysitting. If you wish to sponsor, please email me ([email protected]) or leave a note in Adult Education mail box in the FHJC office.

UNITED PARENTS

Kicking the year off right!

As we write this, summer is winding down and Rosh Hasha-nah is right

around the corner. Rosh Hashanah gives us the opportunity for a fresh start and a new beginning.

As the new year approaches, there are new faces at FHJC. We are de-lighted to welcome our new Nursery School Co-Directors, Lynn Fisher and Iris Chomsky, aboard. Of course, Lynn and Iris are not new to the FHJC Nursery School. Both have been teaching in the Nursery School, Iris for 22 years and Lynn for 12 years. Both Lynn and Iris are out-standing teachers, whose love and devotion for the children and for FHJC are well-known to all of us. We are confident that the out-standing reputation of our Nursery School will only continue with Lynn and Iris at the helm.

We are also very pleased to wel-come Philip Dickstein as Assistant Director of the Religious School/Program Director. Philip comes to us with many years of experience in the field of Jewish Education. He spent more than 20 years as the principal of Solomon Schechter Day School in Nassau County. Most re-cently, he was also the Director of Education at Plainview Jewish Cen-ter. His passion for Jewish Educa-tion and teaching our children is noticeable as soon as you meet him. Philip and Lynn Lancaster, our Religious School Director, will work together to ensure that our Reli-gious School continues to flourish and create a sense of community among our families.

United Parents is gearing up for the 2017-18 school year. Sunday, Sep-tember 10 is going to be a busy day for the families of our FHJC schools. United Parents is holding a Wel-come Back Breakfast for the Reli-gious School that morning. This will be an opportunity for the Religious School families to re-connect with each other and also welcome new families to the Religious School.

Later that day, we will be holding our third annual Nursery School Welcome Back Picnic. Once again, the picnic will be in Cunningham Park in Fresh Meadows. We look forward to seeing our Nursery School families as we start a new school year.

Mark your calendars for Thursday night, October 12, when we will be holding our annual Simhat Torah ice cream party! Dance up an appetite during hakafot and then enjoy some delicious ice cream! Many other exciting events are planned for the coming year – Family Shabbat Din-ner, Scholastic Bookfair, Havdalah night and others. Please be on the lookout for information about these upcoming events.

We also want to take this opportuni-ty to encourage everyone to volun-teer with United Parents in some way. We know that we all lead hec-tic and busy lives, but our programs and events depend on you – the parents of our children – to help out in any way you can.

Shana Tova and best wishes for a happy, healthy and peaceful new year.

Alyssa Pollack and Richard Chase

As we celebrate the start of the new Jewish year at FHJC we have much to look forward to and be grateful for as a community. Our beautiful and inspiring syna-gogue services shared collectively with our member-ship and guests ushers in the year 5778 in a grand way. Please sign up for the always popular and special Suk-kot luncheon graciously chaired by Terri Goffner and Bonnie Dassa. Following the Chagim, we are excited to bring back our Progressive Dinner. After having a won-derful dairy/pareve dinner with a small group at a member's home we have a special fun dessert recep-tion planned. Save the date for this on November 4. Please contact me if you have ideas for membership events or you would like to volunteer or chair some-thing. We are only strong when we work together to-wards the future. We wish you and your family a Shana Tovah u’metukah, a good and sweet year, and a year of peace and love. Helaine Fox, VP Membership

Scholar-in-Residence Program 2018

The History of Chutzpah

Rabbi. Dr. Ed Feinstein

Please set aside the weekend of February 9-10, 2018, for our annual Scholar-in-Residence

Program, once again made possible through the gen-erous support of the Sevin family. Our guest this year will be Rabbi Dr. Ed Feinstein, the Senior Rabbi of Valley Beth Shalom Congregation in Encino, Califor-nia. A faculty member of the Ziegler Rabbinical School of the University of Judaism, the Wexner Heritage Program, and the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusa-lem, Rabbi Feinstein is one of the most sought-after teachers and lecturers on the American Jewish scene.

With his unique blend of scholarship and humor, Rab-bi Feinstein’s presentations will be devoted to “The History of Chutzpah,” tracing the Jewish idea of hu-man empowerment through biblical, rabbinic and philosophical sources.

Please set aside the dates; this is a program you won’t want to miss!

Beginnings and endings are important and the ways in which we choose to

mark them say much about us as individuals, as community, and as a people. The month of Elul provides us with opportunities to make peace with the past and prepare for the future as Rosh Hashanah ap-proaches. Some of what we do is ritualized for us and if we are fortu-nate we have created personal ritu-als that allow us to personalize holy space and time.

In my family we begin and end each year by giving tzedakah. I can only guess that this was a personal prac-tice begun by my grandmother of making sure that she ended and began each year by sharing some of what she had with another who was less fortunate during difficult times. My parents’ world was more sophisticated and, from the time I was a teen, I was aware that the last entry in the household check-book before Rosh Hashanah and the first entry after was always a check for tzedakah. No one was physically knocking on our door, but my parents never allowed us to forget that the world that we lived in was privileged and building a just world was important both symboli-

cally and in day-to-day life. I contin-ued the practice when I had my own checkbook in college and as I began my own family have contin-ued it. Our personal practice, as my children grew, was to allow them to choose a recipient for a tzedakah check that spoke to them. Looking at my checkbooks I can see what was important to them and to us over the years. My children are writing their own checks these days, or more likely giving online. I was however very pleased when one of my sons recently asked us who we give to. The conversation made it clear that this family ritual was continuing.

This year in Religious School we are also continuing the building of ritu-als in order to build strong Jewish community. Our Het class will work together to guide the school’s tzed-akah donations. Our faculty will continue to work together as a team, always there for each other professionally and personally. We begin the year learning together. We will welcome into our midst Assistant Religious School Director Philip Dickstein along with a new administrative assistant and, most important, we will spend a year learning together, living together and creating our own Jewish rituals.

Shana Tova from all of us in the Religious School.

One of the most moving phrases in biblical scripture, “ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” trans-lates to “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.” This describes the unbreakable bond between God and His people. The first Hebrew letter of each of those four words—aleph, lamed, vav and lamed— make up the name of Elul, the current Jewish month. Elul is when we begin our new school year together at The Forest Hills Jewish Cen-ter and the two of us begin our journey as co-directors of Early Childhood. During this month we look inward at our strengths and challenges.

As we are committed to en-hancing our strengths and facing our challenges head on, one of our primary goals this school year is to create a bond among our teachers, children, parents and adminis-

trators that is reinforced by human warmth, much love and mutual respect. Our staff’s purpose is to support each other, learn from each other, and identify ways we can better meet the needs of our classes and school. We have created opportunities for learning with, and from, each other. The staff has been working hard all summer to insure that you and your chil-dren have a wonderful year filled with love, laughter and learning. We know each oth-er well and we listen to and trust each other. Finally, as co-directors we will provide in-tentionality, planning, and support. The staff is excited to work together as a family to better connect with yours.

There are many ways you can prepare for the upcoming holiday of Rosh Hashanah. Not only can we study the

deeper meaning of the holi-day and its rituals, but we can also utilize the time that pre-cedes the holidays as an op-portunity for personal reflec-tion and an opportunity to reach out and become more involved – in Jewish life, at synagogue and here at our school.

We look forward to meeting and welcoming the Nursery School and Pre-K For All fami-lies on Orientation Even-ing. As we begin the school year with a fresh start, we will continue our journey creating a warm and nurturing envi-ronment that supports chil-dren’s learning. We hope to be a source of inspiration and encouragement allowing the children to dive deeper into their own interests.

News From Nursery School

Iris Chomsky and Lynn Fisher

It is real blessing to join the FHJC family. I am serving as the Assistant Director of the Religious School/Program Director.

I bring many years of work in Jewish Education, in both Day Schools and Congregational Schools. I am married with three grown children and two (amazingly wonder-ful) granddaughters.

I love working with teachers and children, helping build our next generation to truly love our people and build a better world for everyone. I want our children and families to ex-perience and share the pride and meaning we all feel in our Jewish lives. More than any-thing, I want my contribution to help our children figure out their place in the eternal chain of the Jewish people.

I again thank Lynn and the entire staff of FHJC for helping me start my work. My deep thanks and appreciation to the teachers and parents I've met, each of whom do so much! FHJC is a wonderful place to be!

My wishes for a sweet year ahead.

Sisterhood had a won-derful sum-mer! Gail Port led a fasci-nating book discussion of The Paris Ar-

chitect. She has done this for several sum-mers and it is clearly a labor of love for her and appreciated by all who come and par-ticipate. One person commented that the discussion was better than the book! We also observed Rosh Chodesh Elul together and embarked on an intensive study of the prophetesses, Miriam and Deborah, which will culminate at the observance of Sister-hood Shabbat when we read Parasha Beshalach (January 27, 2018). We have also begun the back-to-school collection for Transition House which will continue until our first meeting in September. Items being collected include all kinds of school supplies, school uniforms and other cloth-ing for children of all ages, baby supplies, laundry detergent, thermal underwear, hats & gloves, and toiletries.

This year Sisterhood began a second very successful exercise program in addition to Yoga With Lorain Wankoff. The Walking, Posture, and Balance class with Gerald Padilla - who is both a certified trainer and

a licensed Physical Therapist - has been going strong with regular classes on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings each week. Just before Rosh Hashanah on Tues-day, September 19, the schedule will change to two classes every Tuesday morning at 9:30 AM and at 10:45 AM. A third class will be added beginning on Fri-day October 20 at 10:30AM.

And now, as the seasons are beginning to change, Sisterhood is going through a ma-jor change as well. I will step down as Sis-terhood President and Debra Weil and Marcia Belgorod step up as co-Presidents. Sisterhood grew over the last few years as a cohesive group and created a wide varie-ty of interesting programming—programing for which we have been hon-ored by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism and by The Jewish Board of Fami-ly and Children’s Services. This happened because every board member brought their strengths to bear on the organization and committed their time and talents to the planning and running of our many activities. It also happened because our members and the wider FHJC community supported us in our activities. I thank eve-ry member of my Board for supporting me over the last few years. I look forward to “just” being a member of the board and watching how Debra’s and Marcia’s dis-

tinct personalities, interests, and skills shape the organization in the upcoming year.

I therefore invite everyone to join us at our opening meeting on Tuesday, Septem-ber 12 at 8:00 PM when we install new officers and celebrate the new program-ming year. This will also be the final time that you can bring donations to help the families at Transition Center start the school year. Our back to school collection ends at this meeting. If you miss this col-lection period, you will have to wait until winter.

Please join us on Sunday, October 1, from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM when Sisterhood, Men’s Club and the United Parents spear-head the decoration of the FHJC Sukkah. There will be art projects and snacks. We need people who can climb ladders and those who cannot. There is work high up and work that is low to the ground— something for everyone of every age to do. You will be able to point to the final Sukkah and say with pride, “I helped put this together!”

I wish all of you a happy, healthy and sweet New Year on behalf of the entire Sisterhood Board.

Wear the Torah Fund Pin With Pride

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, the official women’s organization of the Conservative Movement, and the 75th anniversary of Women’s League’s dedicated philanthropy: the Torah Fund Campaign.

By wearing a Torah Fund pin, you are demonstrating your support of the students enrolled in our seminaries around the world, who will become our movement’s future Rabbis, Hazzanim, Educators, Hillel Directors, Chaplains, lay leaders and our most innovative thinkers.

The 2017-2018 Torah Fund pin theme, “Mah Tovu: How Good” recognizes a century of women ensuring Conserva-tive Jewish education. Be a part of this year’s centennial celebration by wearing a Torah Fund pin. To receive your pin, please speak with Anise Parnes or Shirley Rossman Zucker.

To learn about other Torah Fund Campaign giving opportunities, please contact Anise Parnes, [email protected].

Join us for Tashlikh, September 21 Please join your Forest Hills family and friends in the Rosh Hashanah tradi-tion of Tashlikh, led by Hazzan Rosenblum and Rabbi Skolnik in the late after-noon after services on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 21st at 5:00 PM. Tashlikh takes us outdoors into the realm of nature as we take part in the symbolic ritual of casting off our regrets from the previous year and looking forward to the New Year. Tashlikh takes place by a body of water where we throw away bread-crumbs to symbolize our sins; we will meet at Flushing Meadows Park, right off Jewel Avenue. This is a wonderful event for all ages and especially for families.

Order Your Lulav and Etrog Your celebration of Sukkot cannot be complete without a Lulav and Etrog. To help our members participate in this wonderful tradition, we are once again taking orders.

Deluxe set $48/Standard set $36. Place your order by September 25, 2017. We can also order sukkot and schach mats.

Please contact Zhanna at [email protected] for more information or to place your order.

Cinematek Forest Hills One of the Forest Hills Jewish Center's best-kept secrets is the little “slo-mo” Jewish film festival that was started 2 years ago.

Showing approximately 1 film per month, Cin-ematek Forest Hills has presented films from Israel, England, and the United States all look-ing at different slices of the Jewish experience.

We shared in the misadventures of an old Jew-ish baker and his Somali apprentice when a certain herb got mixed into the challah dough, we watched a “felafel western” where musi-cians replaced gunfighters in an Israel that never was (all similarities to “The Magnificent 7” are intended), we followed the life of a Fa-lasha boy, brought to Israel by Operation Solo-mon, who has a secret – he's not Jewish and was switched for a boy who had died. We saw documentaries about a suicide bombing in a Tel Aviv blues bar and the way that club brought itself back to life, and about a rabbi (not Rabbi Heschel) who was a major influence on the 1960s Civil Rights movement.

And now Cinematek Forest Hills is coming back for a third season with new surprises (all on Saturday nights) starting on October 21, 2017, with “The Women’s Balcony.”

“The Women's Balcony” is a wise comedy/drama and major Israeli hit about a small Miz-rachi shul, a zealous rabbi and of course the women's balcony. If you've missed this film's theatrical run come see it with us. If you did see it in theatres, see it again and bring friends who missed it.

Sasha Rabinowitz Bat Mitzvah October 28, 2017 Sasha Leah Rabinowitz came into the world

on October 15th 2004 to parents long

waiting that moment in their lives. Early on

in her life she exhibited a sweetness and

warmth that would be hallmarks of her

personality. Wherever she went and still to this day the over-

whelming response from every teacher, counselor and parent is

that Sasha is a sweetheart. She is also smart, talented and yes

still beautiful. We tell her that she has been blessed with every

advantage and hope she will pursue a life worthy of these bless-

ings. Sasha’s interests include painting, surfing, skateboarding,

cooking, science, nature, feminism and fashion. She is a fiercely

loyal friend and advocate for those she feels in need. It was Mo-

rah Lynn in this nursery school who first noted that Sasha, then

3 years old, would say what she thinks and quoted “she must be

heard.” We hope this combination of strength and sweetness

will carry her through a rewarding life ahead. The world awaits

her now!

Galia Shkedi Bat Mitzvah September 16, 2017 Galia has been bringing us joy since she joined our family. She is a loving daughter, caring sister, and devoted friend. Galia is a seventh grade student at Nest+m. She has a great sense of humor and strong

opinions which she always backs up with facts. Galia is pas-sionate about animals and helping others. She loves helping out at a nearby pet store and organized a drive at her school for a domestic violence shelter for her Bat Mitzvah project. She enjoys playing the piano and alto saxophone as well as listen-ing to music, acting, and singing.
