Wearing and Using Your Invisalign Aligners Aligner Insertion 1. Make sure you have the proper aligner‐ the upper for the top teeth and the lower for your bottom teeth. 2. To avoid confusion, each aligner is engraved with your unique case number, a “U” for upper or an “L” for lower, followed by the aligner number. 3. You may insert either the upper or lower aligner first. When inserting each aligner, gently push the aligners over your front teeth. Then, apply equal pressure, using your fingertips, to the tops of your left molar and right molars (back teeth) until the aligner snaps into place. 4. DO NOT BITE your aligners in position. This may damage them. Note: If you experience sharp pain or significant discomfort, discontinue use of the aligners and contact our office. Aligner Removal 1. Using your fingers, start on one side at the molars (back teeth) and then begin removal on the other side at the molars (back teeth). Using equal pressure work your way towards the front of the mouth with the removal of the aligner. (Back teeth, for middle teeth, and end at your front teeth) Note: If you are using the aligner removal hook, remove the aligner the same way as you would with only your fingers. 2. To help prevent damage, avoid unnecessary removal. 3. DO NOT use any sharp objects to remove your aligner. If you need additional assistance removing aligners, the aligner removal hook works best. 4. Immediately rinse aligner with water, shake off excess water, and store your aligners in the protective case provided with your starter kit. Note: Use care in removing your aligners, particularly if you have multiple attachments . Do not use excessive force to bend or twist an aligner to get it off. Consult our office if your aligners are difficult to remove. Here are some tips to help ensure proper use and to avoid damaging your aligners. Always remember to… 1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before handling your aligners 2. Handle only ONE aligner at a time. Daily Care and Maintenance of Your Invisalign Aligners 1. Clean your aligners prior to each insertion. You may use the Invisalign Cleaning system (you can order this online at invisalign.com) or a soft bristle toothbrush with lukewarm water and clear gel toothpaste. 2. Rinse each aligner thoroughly with water after each cleaning. 3. DO NOT use denture cleaners to clean aligners or soak them in mouthwash. These products can damage the surface of the aligner, causing it to become dull and more visible. Proper Oral Hygiene 1. Remove your aligners for eating and drinking except when drinking water (only). 2. Brush and floss your teeth after each meal or snack prior to re‐inserting your aligners. If you have questions regarding your hygiene techniques, consult our office. 3. Regular dental checkups and cleanings with your dentist are recommended for the continued health of your teeth and gums Storing your Aligners 1. Two aligner cases are included in your starter kit. We recommend that you store your Invisalign aligners in a case when not in your mouth. This will help protect them from loss and damage. 2. Designate your blue aligner case for your “current aligner.” Store the aligners you are currently using in this case. 3. When it is time to switch up to the next aligner, transfer the previous aligner you were wearing to the red/orange case. Always keep the most recently used aligners in this case. If your current aligner is lost or broken, we may recommend that you temporarily go back one aligner and then use the aligners in the red case while a replacement is being made. Note: Keep past aligners in a clean plastic bag as instructed by our office. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

FrequentlyAskedQuestionsHow often must I wear my aligners? We find aligners are most effective if worn 20 to 22 hours per day – and removed only for eating, drinking (except for water), brushing, and flossing.

Will Invisalign treatment be painful? While Invisalign moves your teeth without the pain and anxiety of metal braces, some people will experience temporary discomfort for a few days at the beginning of each new stage of treatment. This is normal and is typically described as a feeling of pressure. It's also a sign that Invisalign is working, as it moves your teeth into position. This discomfort typically goes away in a couple of days.

Are there restrictions on what I can eat while in treatment? No. Thanks to the removable nature of the aligners, you can eat and drink whatever you want while in treatment. In fact, you're required to remove your aligners to eat and drink. So, unlike undergoing traditional treatment using wires and brackets, there is no need to restrict your consumption of any of your favorite foods and snacks unless instructed otherwise by your doctor. Also, it is important that you brush your teeth after each meal and prior to re-inserting your aligners to maintain fresh breath and proper hygiene.

Can I chew gum while wearing aligners? No, gum will stick to the aligners. We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks.

Will smoking or chewing tobacco stain the aligners? We discourage tobacco use while wearing aligners because of the possibility of aligner discoloration.

Why do some of my aligners have bumps in them? Some of the movements require “attachments” to help the aligner grip the teeth. These bumps, or wells, are where the aligners grips the attachment that is placed on your teeth.

Will wearing Invisalign aligners affect my speech? Similar to other orthodontic treatments, Invisalign aligners may temporarily affect the speech of some people, and you may have a slight lisp for a day or two. However, as your tongue gets used to having aligners in your mouth, any lisp caused by the aligners should disappear.

Is it okay to drink hot or cold beverages while wearing Invisalign aligners? Except for water, we recommend that you do not eat or drink while wearing the aligners. This is to avoid formation of cavities and stains, and warping of the aligners with extremely hot drinks.

What if I lose or break an Invisalign aligner? In the event that an aligner is lost or broken, you should immediately contact our office.

What should I do if my new Invisalign aligner doesn’t snap onto my teeth? Minor discrepancies between the new aligner and the current tooth position are normal since the teeth need time to conform to the new aligner. In the event of significant problems with aligner fit, contact our office.
