B IBLE STUDY

9 .0 0 A.M. - 9 .4 5 A.M.

QUINQUAGESIMA SUNDAY23RD FEBRUARY, 2020

Theme: In The Name Of Jesus ChristSub-Theme: Jesus Christ (5)Topic: His Oneness with the Holy SpiritTexts: Matthew 3:11; 1 Corinthians 15:45Aims: i. To trace the relationship of Jesus with the Holy

Spirit in the scriptures andii. To highlight the continuous work of Christ with

God’s people through the agency of the Holy Spirit

Introduction: In the previous study, we had looked at the eternal existence of Christ and His sameness with the Father. In this study, we shall look at another aspect of the divine Christ-His sameness with the Holy Spirit who has continued Christ’s work of redemption in the Church until Christ’s second coming.

Study Guide/Questions:1. In each of the following scriptures, identify the work of the

Holy Spirit in relation to Christ: Matt.3:11; Luke 1:35; Luke 3:21-22; Rom.8:9,11

2. Explain how Jesus and the Holy Spirit are described in these texts? 1 Cor.15:45 (cf. John 5:21) and 1 Peter 1:11. See also 1 John 5:7

3. Relate the ministry of Jesus Christ to that of the Holy Spirit in the continuing redemption work in the contemporary Church. John 7:37-39; 15:26; 16:13-15; Rom. 8:26-27;

4. Jesus said, “...lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age”. How does God maintain His presence in the life of the Christian today? 1 Corinthians 12:13; Gal.3:27

Conclusion: The work of Christ’s salvation continues through the Holy Spirit. Indeed the Holy Spirit is also referred to as “the Spirit of Jesus”; just as Jesus is referred to as the “quickening Spirit”. The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus as well as glorifies Him. We see therefore that just as Christ is of the same essence with the Father, even so He is of the same essence with the Holy Spirit. It is the unfathomable mystery of the triune God!

Food For Thought: The Holy Spirit testifies of and glorifies JesusChrist

Memory Verse: 1Cor 15:45 “And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life giving spirit”.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE KINGDOM CITIZENSHIP: NEW LIFE IN CHRIST.

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away; behold, the new has come into being 2Cor.5:17

Every human being has a past, consciously and unconsciously. This was a time when a distinct relationship with God could not be described. This life is considered as old life when we live as aliens from God.

The gift of salvation in Christ is regarded as a new life. Throughout the scriptures, new life after a cordial relationship has been established is described. Ezekiel said “I will give you a new heart and new Spirit Ezekiel 36:26, prophet Jeremiah called it a new covenant Jer. 31:31. Prophet Isaiah described it as new name. Isaiah 62:2

Apostle Paul wrote in second Corinthians 5:17 “If any man is in Christ, he is a new creature.” This signifies that everyman must cross over from Old life style to a new life style. The Bible recognizes these life styles as old way of living: Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, unrighteous, fornicators, adulteress, thieves, extortioners,

evil desires, and greed which is idolatry, because of these, the wrath of God is coming. Col. 3:5-10, 1 Cor. 6:9-11. Therefore put to death, whatever belong to your earthly nature. We must get rid of anger, rage, malice, slander, filthy language, lies, and all other ungodly practices. The Bible says all wrong doers will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

Beloved, The Scriptures enjoin us to put on a new life in Christ Jesus because we have been washed, sanctified and justified in His name. Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness and patience. Col. 3:12.

It is my prayer that God will remove the old garments from us and give us the power to put on new life in Jesus name.
