Linking wordsThe linking words or linkers are used to connect ideas or sentences. They are very important in speaking and in writing as they help us make our ideas clear so that other people understand what we want to say .

AND

We use “and” to join similar ideas. If the subject is the some in both sentences, we can omit it in the second one.

Ex: He phoned me and told me the good news.

OR

We use “or” to join two options or alternative ideas. The subject can be omitted if it’s the same in both sentences.

Ex: You can read the newspaper or watch TV.

BUT

We use “but” to contrast ideas. The subject can be omitted if it’s the same in both sentences.

Ex: He went to the beach but didn’t have a swim. The water was too cold.

SO

We use “so” to express the result of the first action. The subject is never omitted in the second sentence.

Ex: The boy was tired so he fell asleep.

BECAUSE

We use “because” to give the reason of something.

Ex: He sat down because he was tired.

We can also use “because” at the beginning.

Ex: Because he was tired, he sat down.

DESPITE

We use “despite” before a noun phrase or the “-ing” form of a verb.

Ex: Despite his strength, he couldn’t lift the barbell or Despite being very strong he couldn’t lift it.

IN SPITE OF

We use “in spite of” in the same way as “despite”.

ALTHOUGH

We use “ although” to introduce a clause.
