People-First Language
! A person with autism. ! A child with Down syndrome. ! A girl with intellectual disabilities ! A man who uses a wheelchair. ! A boy with paraplegia.
Not People-First, not Respectful ! The epileptic child. ! The wheelchair bound man ! The retarded boy ! The suffering disabled girl.
Course Description:
! This course serves as an introduction to the historical, legislative, environmental, and societal issues in the field of special education.
! Students will learn about the characteristics of persons with diverse abilities.
! The focus of this course will be on individual differences and the inclusion of persons with disabilities in society (e.g., families, education, employment, recreation, politics).

Accommodations
! To obtain disability-related academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids, students with disabilities must contact the course instructor and the Disability Resources and Educational Services (DRES). Accommodations
! Accommodations due to a disability will require an accommodations letter from DRES. The instructor and Teaching Team will do their best to make adjustments and provide any necessary accommodations to facilitate a successful learning experience for students with documented disabilities.
Academic Integrity
! Complete all assignments individually and independently of anyone else (Except when otherwise instructor by Dr. Light Shriner or when completing a group class project).
! Don’t cheat.
! Don’t give anyone your assignments.
! Do not collaborate on quizzes.
! Don’t sign the attendance sheet for anyone else.
! Always cite your sources. APA format. Use quotation marks if you are using a passage from another source. Use citation for paraphrased passages. (author’s last name, date of source)
Writing Skills
! Please make sure you are submitting quality assignments (in class, weekly, and major assignments)
! Use proper writing skills, sentences, and good grammar. Use punctuation and proper capitalization.
In-Class QuickWrites
! Will be submitted through Moodle During Class.
! If you do not have a way to submit on Moodle, you can use a 3 x 5 index card to submit the in-class assignment.
Behavioral Expectations
! Be on time. ! Grade or grading questions. ! Respectful and attentive behavior
Weekly Assignments ! There will be a weekly assignment OR quiz due
every week.
! Weekly assignments are ALWAYS posted on Wednesdays at 9:00 am and due by 12:00 Noon on Tuesday.
! Weekly assignments will not be accepted LATE.
! Once submitted, graders will begin to grade your assignment. Plan ahead and only submit when you are completely finished.

(TBA) ! Take notes while watching the view and answer the video questions. ! Submit the answers to the questions. ! Use quotation marks when using passages from any video or readings. Use
citations (author’s last name, year) or (website address). ! Please provide your full name (first and last) and the complete questions and
answers. ! Number each question and place a space after each paragraph and answer.
(Make sure you have space between answers within the text box. Using the format box assists in making it easier to grade.)
! Remember to use People-First Language. ! Copy and paste all information in the Textbox of the submission AND attach
a nicely formatted "Word" document. (Information in the text box will be graded) (Information from the word document will only be graded if there is a problem with the information in the text box.)
! Be thorough, use good sentences, and do not make us guess. ! Submit only when you are certain you are finished.

! 10 questions (.5 points each) ! 3 hours ! 2 attempts ! Pool of questions so you may not get the

Grades
! No Plus or Minus grades will be given.
Grading Questions
! If you have a question, send the question on email to the grader and course instructor.
! Be respectful when asking for clarification about grades. “I have a question about my grade. Could you provide some clarification on why a point was deducted? Thank you!”
! If you need additional clarification, contact Dr. Light Shriner and arrange a meeting.
! Do not ask grade or grading questions immediately before, during, or after class.
