Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Readings for Ordinary Time
With politics on the rise, it is not unusual
to hear about fundraising dinners where it
costs thousands of dollars for a place at
the table with a famous person. This is not
unusual. The concept that a person is
known by the company they keep has
been ingrained within the human spirit for
ions. In ancient times, a singular method of
rising in class status was to dine with the
rich and famous. The alliances that were
formed around the table would determine
any chance for class change. Thus, to hold
a banquet and get seated next to a famous
or rich personage was the ideal situation.
In today’s Liturgy of Word, Jesus informs us that in the
Kingdom of God just the opposite is true. The Christ
reveals that in God’s eyes the lowly and humble shall be
exalted and the rich humbled. In fact, the only way to
guarantee a heavenly reward was to humbly associate
oneself with those in need.
In the first reading from the Book of Sirach, the teacher,
Jesus Ben Sira, advises people to become virtuous
through humility and service to others. This precursor to
Christ establishes the foundation for pleasing God –
humility. Instead of following the worldly custom of class
advancement through using your resources for self-
aggrandizement, Ben Sira advises all to place God first
and give alms to the poor. Through this method, the God
of All will be pleased and sins atoned. It is this teacher’s
belief that by humbly putting God and others before
yourself is the one true way that true wisdom is
discovered and human growth takes place.
For the early Christians, the epitome of true Wisdom is
Jesus. Christ, being fully human and Divine, exemplifies
the path for His followers. He associated Himself with the
lowly and ministered to the poor. He endured His
sufferings out of love of the Father and His neighbor. In
the Letters to the Hebrews, the past and present are
merged with examples of how God is revealed to His
People. In pre-messianic times, the Holy was approached
with trepidation and awe. Now, through Christ, Christians
could approach the Divine with confidence due to their
incorporation and adoption as sons
and daughters of God through Jesus,
the perfect mediator. Now, the new
“Chosen People” could access Mount
Zion and the New Jerusalem because
Jesus, Himself, brought all to the
Father.
The means to access the Heavenly
Banquet is the theme of today’s Gospel
according to Luke. Jesus has been
invited to a banquet sponsored by a
Pharisee. He has noticed that people
are playing the social game by
attempting to get seated in the places
of honor. Frustrated with witnessing this human fault,
Christ has two messages – one for the guests and one for
the host. Jesus tells the guest that it would be better for
them to seek the lowest place because the host would
come and move you publicly to a higher station. Thus,
you would be exalted before all. Then, more poignantly,
Christ advises the Pharisee that, in the eyes of God, it
would be more beneficial for him not to invite the rich
and famous to a banquet; rather, an invitation to the
poor and needy would garner him far greater rewards at
the Resurrection of the righteous.
Holy Mother the Church reminds us, today, of that same
lesson. In our world where the rich and famous continue
this ancient practice where social advancement is still
accomplished through self-aggrandizement and social
contacts, Christ’s message echoes through the centuries.
In the eyes of God, it is poor, needy and marginalized
that are our way to the Resurrection of the righteous.
The mammon of this world is here solely for our benefit
to use as tools in showering God’s love on our fellow
man. God made us in His image and showed us, through
Christ, what true sacrifice looked like. Just as Jesus came
“to serve. Not to be served” so, too, our reason for
existence is the same. As we await the Final Judgement
and the end of the Church year, this passage of Luke
should echo in our minds and cause us to put our
priorities in order so that we can enter the Kingdom of
God and partake in the Eternal Banquet.
