The program consists of several interactive sessions throughout the year. Each session will focus on a specific feast day. This is to help you to better understand our Byzantine traditions more deeply and prepares you to participate more fully during these special days in our liturgical year. Our first session will be:

“Exaltation of the Cross” – Sun., Sept. 12, 2010

The program begins at 1:00 PM and is held

in the school auditorium. Light lunch will be served. All are welcome to attend!!

Літургія в 11-й в каплиці святої Терези на 2-му поверсі;

Полуденок в монастирському кафе, або на свіжому повітрі тим, що візьмете з дому;

Хресна дорога о 1-й пополудні;

Молебен о 4-й пополудні;

Виїзд назад до Чикаго о 5 пополудні,

Прибуття до катедри між 7:30-8:00 вечора.

The Feast of the Beheading of St. John the Baptist

August 29 Herod Antipas, son of Herod the Great, who ordered the massacre of the children of Bethlehem, dismissed his first wife and unlawfully cohabited with Herodias, the wife of his brother, Philip. St. John the Forerunner publicly rebuked Herod for the scandal he was giving; and for this he had to pay with his life. Herodias took revenge on him in a foul manner, by inducing Herod to have him beheaded. A pious legend relates that the severed head of John the Baptist, even on the platter spoke, saying: “You cannot have your brother’s wife.” As a result Herodias was believed to have pierced John’s tongue with a needle. Fearing, let he rise from the dead and his head join his body, she buried the head on the premises of the palace. The disciple of St. John took his body and buried it in Sebaste, in Samaria. Testimony concerning this feast dates from the fifth century. The Missal of Pope Galasius (492-496) has the feast. St. Andrew of Crete composed the service for the Beheading of St. John (7c), along with St. John Damascene and the Patriarch, Germanus (8c). From the earliest times, on this day the Eastern Church has observed a strict fast in honor of the suffering and death of the saintly Forerunner.

Празник Усікновення Голови 29 серпня

Ірод Антипа, син Ірода, що наказав замордувати вифлеємських дітей, свою першу жінку відпустив і жив незаконно з жінкою свого брата Филипа. Святий Йоан Предтеча прилюдно ганьбив Ірода за його поведінку. І за те заплатив своїм життям. Іродіяда помстилася Йоанові і в дуже нечесний спосіб дістала від Ірода його голову. Побожна легенда каже, що відтята Йоанова голова ще на полумиску говорила: "Не можна тобі мати жінку брата твого". За те Іродіяда нібито голкою колола його язик. А боячись, щоб він не воскрес, коли б голова злучилася з тілом, вона закопала голову на подвір'ї палати.

Учні святого Йоана взяли його тіло і поховали в Севасті в Самарії. Свідчення про цей празник маємо з V ст. Його містить Служебник папи Геласія (492-496). Службу Усікновенню уклали святий Андрій Критський (VII ст. ), святий Йоан Дамаскин і патріярх Герман (VIII ст. ). Східна Церква від найдавніших часів цього дня зберігає строгий піст на честь мук і смерти святого Предтечі.

Annual Pilgrimage to Holy Hill October 17, 2010

Our bus to Holy Hill is quickly filling up. If you would like to participate in our parish’s annual pilgrimage, please come to the parish office in the cathedral hall beginning September 6th or to the Rectory office Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Tickets are $25.00 per person and must be paid for in advance.

Confessions are heard on Sundays during each Liturgy or by appointment.

Baptisms should be arranged through a priest at least one month prior to the date of baptism. Parents and sponsors must attend instruction prior to the baptism of their child.

Marriage: Couples planning to marry are requested to make their arrangements early, but no less than six (6) months in advance of the proposed date. Pre-marital conferences must be arranged six (6) months prior to the ceremony. At least one of the couple, or their parents should be registered participating members of St. Nicholas Cathedral for eligibility to be married in the cathedral.

Sick & Homebound: If you or a family member are confined to home and are unable to attend Liturgy either temporarily or on a continuing basis, and wish to receive communion, please notify the parish office.

Hospital Stay: If you or a family member are admitted to a hospital for any reason and wish to have a priest come to visit, please notify the parish office. Recent federal privacy laws do not allow hospitals to notify the parish if you are admitted. It is the responsibility of the patient or family to notify the parish office.

The New Star is our monthly eparchial newspaper and has information from all our parishes as well as from Ukraine. The subscription cost is only $20.00 per year and should be paid in the parish office.

Хрещення: Слід усталити дату з священиком не менш як за місяць до запланованого дня хрестин. Батьки і хресні мають виконати необхідне приготування, про яке довідаються в священика.

Шлюб: Наречені мають вписатися в книгу на вінчання заздалегідь, але не менш як за 6 місяців до церемонії. За шість місяців наречені мають відбути підготовчі бесіди із священиком. Принаймні один з наречених, або їх батьки мають бути зареєстрованими практикуючими парафіянами катедри, щоби вінчання могло відбутися саме в катедрі св. Миколая.

Перебування в лікарні: Якщо Ви, або хтось з Вашої родини, з будь яких причин, є на лікуванні в лікарні й бажає щоб священик його відвідав, просимо повідомити про це парафіяльну канцелярію. Федеральний уряд законом про втримання таємниці (privacy law) , не дозволяє лікарній адміністрації давати знати парафії. Це є відповідальністю паціента або його родини.

"Нова Зоря" є єпархіальним місячником, що подає відомості про всі єпархіальні новини, а також новини з України. Ви можете сплатити річну передплату, що складає 20 доларів, у парафіяльній канцелярії.
