Statment :
I think design is a tool of communication. Design thinking is the sense of seeing through the original point of an object/behavior and act in a different way. I enjoy exploring the intersection of rational thinking and perceptual experience.
I am a student studied in Innovation Design Engineering programe, a double master degree between Royal College of art and Imperial College London in UK. I have a B.S.E degree in mechanical engineering and 1 year product design experience in design studio developing apple product accessories and electronic products. My enthusiasm toward creating innovative products push me having further study in UK. I really hope to contribute my talent and capability in a practical and divers design studio during this summer.

Start to test mechnism feasibility on a small scale function prototype. With the help of CAD, building first 1 to 1 functionalv prototype with carbon fiber which has really high strength to weight ratio, very high stiffness. Using rubber instead some of the hinges, much more simplify this product.

This is a project of creating an innovative watch done when I audited design course in college. While I was fascinated with the electrical guitar at that time, I tried to combine the idea of the watch and the guitar. I discovered that both of them had a lot in common.
STORY
I try to find the connection between guitar & watch. First of all, time is the soul in a watch, while the rhythm is the soul in a guitar. When playing a guitar, a pick along with a metronome is used to control its rhythm. I found it possible and easy to combine a metronome with a watch, only adding a simple electrical device. Next, I tried to bring together a watch and a pick, in view of the fact that a pick was easily lost. Such was my object of creating this watch.
I brainstormed the possibility of combining the form and structure of a pick and a wristwatch by sketching. Due to the characteristic shape of a pick, it is designed as two hands of the watch. Considering its practicality, it should be easily detached and attached. Of course, the structural feasibility is also taken into consideration. Besides, the wristband and the metronome controller are also elaborately designed.

Then, I began the 1:1 modeling by using clay. Through the clay modeling, I could adjust the size of the watch and the length of the wristband, thus making it well-fitting and stylish. The next step was to present a computer-aided modeling.

A watch for guitar player.
Through the little slit aside, the user can choose picks of different colors or materials. Around the shell of the watch are twelve dots, which serve to indicate time. The two buttons on the top right serve to control the electrical metronome.
CHARACTER
The top layer is to insert the minute hand of the watch, attracted by and revolved with the magnetic gear on the base layer. The mid layer is to insert the hour hand, directly driven by another gear on the base layer. Between layers is the bearing, which helps them rotate smoothly.

I tried to create an image of nature in the house and it should be a practical device to save energy. A tree was the first thought that came into my mind. It also would be like the heart of a house, pumping the energy into this house. Thus, I combined the idea of a tree and a heart to create its outline. Most important, the product must remind people of the household energy consumption. At first, I was contemplating whether it was to be a touchable object or only a virtual image on the screen. Then, I decided to adopt both and let it be around our life.
STORY
Everyone knows environment protection is important. But how many guys really put attention on it in daily life? People who damage the earth most live in areas without something calling them that "there is a nature being with you from the past to the future."
I chose a global styrofoam to prototype this. I shaped the styrofoam with a welding torch. Since it functioned like a lamp in the house, so I made sure it had the appropriate size.

Began to arrange the component and details by sketching. Used the grayscale markers to capture the texture of transparent glass. Drew the image of combination of tree and heart that came from the storming before.

After I used geometry structure to determine the final shape of the tree, it seems to be more steady and spirited. Furthermore, I hided the base under the stand so the tree seems to float in the air.
When the electricity consumption comes too high, the micro pump of this device will cause the conductive ink to drop, symbolizing that a tree is withering. On the contrary, when the electricity consumption is not high, the motor of this device will cause it to rise, symbolizing that a tree is growing.

It is believed that the shape of the goblet is important, as it concentrates the flavour and aroma. One common belief is that the shape of the glass directs the wine itself into the best area of the mouth from the varietal. Generally, the opening of the glass is not wider than the widest part of the bowl. Most wine glasses have stems, although "stemless" wine glasses are now available in a variety of sizes and shapes as well. I admired the gorgeous shape of the goblets, and appreciated the function and the beauty of them.
A f te r ca re fu l observa t ion , I go t an innovation. A “chandelier” serves the key to all my ideas: it should be easy to retrieve, it could provide a dry space, and it would reflect its beauty. At the same time, the versatile shapes of the goblets become the best decoration on the dining lamp. The lamp gives a dry storage space and the light-bulb can evaporate its moisture.I sketched a l l the poss ib i l i t ies o f a chandelier hanging goblets. From a piece of metal full of ornamental engraving to the transformation of the standard goblet rack, I worked on the structure that could provide the best way to retrieve a goblet as well as the most elegant appearance. Finally, I chose to bend the steel bar to form an object, which is easy in production, strong in structure, convenient in service, and elegant in its form.
Use the computer to make the line smoothly and make sure that the goblets won't drop out off the steel structure.
I printed the 1:1 3-views diagrams to help modeling the outline of the element of Goblet Light with steel wire.
I was pondering how to create a goblet rack that functions well and reflects the beauty of goblets.After observing the goblet rack on the market, I discovered one disadvantage of it. That is, it is inconvenient to take the goblet that hangs inside. Without taking off all the other goblets that hang in front of it, one can never reach it. However, the simple structure of two mere steel bars is what I appreciated and wanted to take advantage of. I also discovered that the cleansing of the goblets is also important. It is essential that a goblet be dry and clean so that the mildew won’t grow.

Use the 1.6 mm stainless steel wire to shape the light. Makes it seems more "light" and elegant. And the lamp should looks good in both conditions, holding goblet and empty.
Goblet L ight is a dinning lamp and a space for holding goblets functionally a n d p o e t i c a l l y . Harmonious beauty of combining light and goblets.

WATERWASH Combine and simplify the process of washing vegetable and watering plants.

One day when I prepared dinner with mom, I found that mom used to collect water washing vegetables, and water plants with it. But it’s quite complicate that she should use a basin and then pour it into a sprinkler. An idea of combining washing vegetable & watering plants came out.
Observed the sprinklers and washing tools in the market.
Centrifugal force basket is a tool, which can be used to dry the vegetables. Without mist on the vegetables, you won’t be splashed with oil when cook. Furthermore, you can have health salad.
There are two kinds of watering method. One is watering plant by plant, another one is watering large area with mist. Considering the utilize of small family, I choose the simple one, watering plant by plant.
Used the gear lever to dry vegetables, and tried to transfer it to be a handle of watering tool also.
Let the gap of basket be a shape of needle, it can let the water resource be full used.
Tried to contain the image of water in the shape of the product.
Chose white, lemon green and lake blue to be the color of the product.

S t a r t e d t o m o d e l w a t e r w a s h . T h e most pratical gear is the involute gear. Determined the module , number of teeth and the gear ratio between the big gear and small gear. Drew the gears and simulate the mechanism.

Waterwash is a household tool that can convert from a centrifugal force basket to a sprinkler.
CHARACTER
Rotate the handle to promote high-speed rotary basket. Completely drain water from vegetables and fruits. Take out vegetables and fruits.
Rotate the handle along another axis, and then transform waterwash to be a watering tool.

I started to cut the chair in half, and glue each of the half-chair to a 180*56.5cm mirror reforming the chair to be two stand mirrors .

IMPLEMENTATION
It’s a workshop held by DHH studio and Shiang Ye Industrial Co. The target is to redesign a chair with different topics. My topic is "reform".
I started to think about "reform". "Reform" can be represented in many ways. I thought that cut the chair into half and assembled w i th a p iece o f m i r ro r can be ve ry meaningful. The mirror can stand with itself and the phenomenon between the chair and mirror is interesting.At first, I tried to use hinge to connect the two stand mirrors. Hence the two stand mirrors can rotate to become two face to face chairs. The two form of this work describing the relationship between couples, somtimes they sit face to face while somtimes they sit side by side. However, it was too complicate and might defocused the initial phenomenon that I wanted to express.

This work discuss the phenomenon that people always think they see the whole fact (the whole chair), but in fact, this is not a real chair (it is composed of part of real chair & part of reflection). You can see the whole real chair only when you stand in front of the object, which means on the sight of neutral.

STORY
Near field communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into close proximity, usually no more than a few centimetres. Present and anticipated applications include contactless transactions, data exchange and simplified setup of more complex communications such as Wi-Fi. Wearing this case, your i-Phone can be filled with functions which is showed on the right .
What is NFC ?
It was a project to design an iPhone 4 case containing the NFC PCB (Printed circuit board) for our client, a computer corporation.

There was a problem to slip the PCB into the case. It seems to be so heavy and bulky with the PCB in. Thus, “more thinner” was one important goal to reach.

Being a tool to help iPhone include such many capability, I thought it might substitute the wallet in our pocket. Coins, credit cards, id card, tickets be out! So I took the shape of wallet swelling out with coins and cards. Cleverly contain the PCB. Being a subtraction design, it lets the case thinner, also get the image what the NFC means.

3. Assembled. Inserted the NFC PCB and the PCB frisket into the case. Finally, iPhone is installed. Checked the gap between iPhone and case is perfect for dressing and taking off easily. Last but not least, made sure the model is fine to mold.
Compared the final product to the NFC case before. It seems to be much more thin and light. The shape is just like a wallet stuffed full with coins and cards. It naturally swells.

Used the iPhone and PCB 3D model to constrain the dimensions of my design object. Modeled the major shape and added the function properties together such as camera hole, buttons and sound holes.

Brainstorming of various patterns. To b e t t e r i m i t a t e t h e w o r k e d leather texture of a retro sofa while considering the size of an iPhone, 7 interlacing patterns were inserted onto the back while subtly bracketing the camera lens. On the border, wood decor were used to imitate real life carved frame.
The idea of this product is to convert the features of classic chair “smoke series” into iPhone case.Create a product shows the low-key luxury taste. Just like classic leather sofa, the iPhone case provide a “cushion” function to protect iPhone when it drops down by accident.

Several fading lines were drawn to mimic the rivets. The model was done with only seven contacting points with the cellphone inside, thus retaining suff ic ient spaces for protect ive cushion.

An iPhone case with low-key luxury taste. Protect the iPhone with rubber cushion. CHARACTER Finally, the shell was coated with a layer of leather paint for texture. In this light, as the paint getting worn by usage, the texture would become even more convincing.

Four requirements were considered :
1. There must be some holes on the top let the incense spread out, and it’s better to be invisible (more beautiful).2. There also need some louvers below, let the thermal energy resulted from the heater be cooled.3. The top cover must can be opened, so the sandal wood ingot can be put in.4. The control elements are a power button, an indicator light.

At first, I thought about various open covering mechanisms and louver positions. I tried to let the louvers be invisible or become a bonus point forappearance. For the sandal wood ingots can be fixed firmly after the top cover closed, I chose the horizontal single-axis mechanism to open the cover. I pictured two forms that can let the louvers be hidden , " Pattern" and "Layer " . "Pat tern" is the form composed o f s imple geomet r ic figures. The spaces between the geometric figures are unsurprisingly became louvers. "Layer" is the form constructed of several layers. Stack several discs forming the appearance. L o u v e r s a r e s k i l l f u l l y h i d d e n . Considering the taste of customer, the "Pattern" form is too artistic. I adopted the "Layer" form which is more close to consumer electronic products.
To cast the concept into model, while making sure the angles in the draft are fine.

Strong connection between the function and form of the product.
Used the " L " shape member as the top cover linkage. As a result, the mechanism is hidden and it functions well without interfere.
CAR INCENSE An electrical product that burns sandal wood to create incense in car.
My team and I cooprated with Glass Art, which is an institute popularizing fusing glass in Taiwan on this project. They developed a product called "glass cube" showed below with Taiwan Industr ial Technology Research Institute. If cosumers buy the cubes, they can joint them to become a "glass wall". LEDs are inserted in each cube so the glasses can be lightend. Cosumers also can change the glass in the cube to create various patterns.
However, the chairman of Glass Art was not satisfied with this product.There was a big problem. It was too inconvenient to assemble and take apart. Consumers should use lot of screws to fix the wall and change glasses. Hence, he invited me to redesign the structure of the glass cube. The requirements was "easy assembled" and "easy to change glasses".We decided to use the concept of "stuck".So we used "glass frame" to substitute for "glass cube".

The "glass wall" which was redesigned by us.
We discussed about the structure, form, mechanism of the "glass frame". We seperated the "glass cube" into two parts, "structure frame" and "glass frame". To build the glass wall, the consumers should assemble the "structure frame" first. Then insert the "glass frame" into the space surrounded by "structure frame".At first, we hoped the consumer can "click" to take apart from the "glass frame" the "structure frame" easily. So we sketched a lot about the inner mechanism. As a result, we choose the simple form which is easier to be produced.

The redesigned structure is easy to assemble and change glasses without screws.
1. Assemble the "frame structure" to what size you want.2. Insert the fusing glass into "glass structure".3. Insert the "glass structure" into the space surrounded by "frame structures".4. Rotate the "lock bar" to fix the frames.
When the "glass frame" is installed the two "structure frames" is also locked. Easily assembled without screws.

It was a school project to use the system mechanism design method to redesign the mechanism of the six-linkage treadmill. I think it is a very useful tool to develope new mechanisms which might be very important on my design career.I successfully developed five kinds of innovative mechanism by this tool and the steps are shown on the right.

In topological diagram, a circle indicates a linkage, a line indicates a joint and a double circle indicates the base. Pick a proper point to be the base and then match other points to proper linkages.
Convert the linkages you set in step three into 3D model and stimulate the machanisms. Check the machanisms works fluently.
