They can spend me doing things together and this builds a child’s disposions for learning. There are many ways to support learning at home as well as at school. Parents don’t need to be experts ….. they can support through reading together, making me for adult – child conversaons, exploring a child’s special interests and developing a producve environment for homework and the use of digital technology. Consider the following ways to engage with your child: *Read together – books before bed, Grandma’s favourite story on Skype, email from Grandpa, story on an iPad with a sibling, street signs, or a tradional family recipe. *Write together – shopping list, invitaon to a friend, a leer / envelope to grandparents, birthday cards, informaon while on a family holiday. *Talk together – ask open ended quesons, talk about big ideas, passions, sport, movies, books, family history, and family tradions, rhymes. Talk with the whole family at dinner me and Skype with family members. *Play together – board games, family card games, construct cubby houses, dress-ups, hide and seek, ball games, lego / blocks, bake with a family member. *Laugh together – tell jokes, make up rhymes and riddles, family concerts and watch a funny movie. *Move together – go for a family walk or bike ride, jump on the trampoline, swim, play backyard cricket, plant a vegie patch, swing and climb at the local park, try different sports. *Explore together – visit the museum, art gallery or the zoo, story me at the library, holiday at the beach, bus ride to the city, shop at the market, swim at the local pool, camp in the backyard. All members of a family support the development of a child..... mums, dads, step-parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins. As my 10 year old grandson put it so eloquently “I learn lots from my mum and dad and teacher but I also learn other stuff from old people like you and grandpa”.
