Add Your Piece to the Peace of World Heritage "We hope to bring a little more cheer, and more smiles to people around the world." With this sentiment, we set out to create the first World Heritage Exhibit built with LEGO® BricksPIECE of PEACE in 2003. It was just around the time when events worldwide had demonstrated a patent disregard for the desire that we all have for peace, as we were facing increasingly grave environmental threats. Since then, the exhibit has evolved over the years, advancing togeth- er with people’s desire for peace, a universal goal of humankind. Our first exhibit toured 13 locations across Japan, while the second tour, which started in 2008, visited 14 locations nationwide. To commemorate the auspicious 40th anniversary of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage in 2012, we have embarked on the third PIECE of PEACE exhibit. This latest jour- ney extends beyond the borders of Japan, as we have launched a world tour. We are extremely pleased to announce that a total of some 2.8 million people have visited the exhibit to date, and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors who will bring their own individual Piece of Peace to the project. UNESCO has registered 1031 World Heritage sites throughout the world (as of 2015). These are sites that embody our human historical and cultural heritage, sites of great natural beauty that have existed since the planet was formed, and sites that combine both manmade and natural elements. There are some sites also conserved as bitter reminders of the pain and suffering that wars have caused. In so many different ways, these World Heritage sites are gems for all of humankind around the globe. Sadly, these treasures are now in peril even greater than when the first exhibit was held, for reasons of erosion, devel- opment and conflict. Protecting these sites is a difficult task, but if each of us here today brings a unique piece of peace, we will surely be able to leave these treasures to the children of future generations. Our aim is to bring together “pieces” people’s wishes from all around Japan, and even from around the World, like piling each brick piece, to build up greater peace. We hope that once again, each of you will bring your own piece of peace to World Heritage and the future of our globe!
