I will show you how we count two 설날.

New Year’s Day you celebrate the first of January

This is a calendar we use which is based on the sun but we used to use

the lunar calendar for a long time so we put the lunar date along with

the date in the sun calendar.

Actually as you see in the calendar 설날 is the 7th of February this year

because that day is the first of January in 2008 on lunar counting system.

In my opinion, the first of January and 7th of February both of them are 설

날. Because some people celebrate their 설날 on the first of January

and the other people do on first of January on the lunar calendar. The

reason why the day of the first of January being called 신정 is to

compare to 설 날 which is on the 7th of February.

We wear 한복한복한복한복 and offer 차례차례차례차례 to ancestors and go to the ancestor’s

grave which is called 성묘성묘성묘성묘. Also we do 세배세배세배세배 to old people.

I can’t remember the last time I wore a 한복한복한복한복 I still remember it took

bloody long time to dress up and there were so many rules for kid to

learn just to wear a clothes.

한복 is getting modernized itself

제사제사제사제사, the offering to ancestors. These offerings in holidays are called 차례차례차례차례

because it is served with liquors and teas. This time women get really

busy preparing the food from the previous day. They make 떡떡떡떡 고기고기고기고기 전전전전

they buy fruits fishes and so on. They spend almost entire day in the

preparations.

성묘성묘성묘성묘

We normally go to ancestors’ grave to offer ancestral ceremony and tidy

up around the grave in 설날 and 추석. We call it 성묘

고기 meat

전 Meat, fish, vegetables are coated in flour, dipped in egg and fried, or mixed with batter like pancakes.
