Weekly Halachah—Parshas Vayishalch R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
May I light the chanukiah at my family's Chanukah party, and count that as my mitzvah?
Lighting at a Chanukah party located in another person's house does not fulfill one’s personal mitzvah. One who will leave home before sunset, and return home after traffic outside his house has ceased, should use one of the following three solutions, listed in descending order of preference:
1) Light at home after plag haminchah (3:50 PM in Toronto at the start of Chanukah this year); the chanukiah must remain lit until more than 30 minutes after the stars emerge;
2) Have someone else light for him in his home at the proper time;
3) Light after returning from the party, making sure that someone else is awake to see his chanukiah. This is less than ideal, as it delays the mitzvah and it risks forgetting altogether.
(Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 677:1; Mishneh Berurah 677:12, 679:2; Rivivot Ephraim 4:163:12, 16, 32)

QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS VAYISHLACH BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (32:8) If Hashem had already promised to protect Yaakov, why was Yaakov
so scared of meeting Esav?
Second Aliyah: (32:30) Why was it important for Yaakov to know the name of the being
with whom he had wrestled?
Third Aliyah: Isn’t it strange that we don’t eat a portion of a kosher animal, the Gid
HaNasheh, because Yaakov was injured there? Is there any other
example of a mitzvah like this in the Torah?
Fourth Aliyah: (33:12‐16) It seems like Esav turned out to be a pretty decent guy – if so,
why did Yaakov refuse to travel with him?
Fifth Aliyah: How could Shimon and Levi justify deceiving and killing the people of
Shechem – if the prince sinned, what crime did the people commit?
Sixth Aliyah: (35:18) How could Rachel name her son Ben Oni, a name that
implies travail – what mother would give her son such a name?
Seventh Aliyah: Why is it important for the Torah to chronicle the families of
Seir and Edom?

Our Effort to assist in the rebuilding in Israel continues!
Recently, a series of deliberately set fires raged across Israel displacing tens of thousands of people and causing enormous damage to hundreds
of homes, buildings, parks and forests.
Now, BAYT together with Mizrachi Canada is coordinating an emergency appeal to help repair and rebuild a special place destroyed by fire ‐ the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva of Haifa.
As fire spread, students from the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva ran to rescue children in the nursery located on the first floor of their building. They then tried to save holy books from the burning Yeshiva. Unfortunately, it was too late. The Beit Midrash together with hundreds of holy books were destroyed in the blaze.
For many years the Mevaser Shalom Hesder Yeshiva served as an important bridge between all types of Jews living in Haifa. It's a place where both religious and secular felt welcome. The Yeshiva also provided military preparation programs, preparation for new brides and grooms, as well as marriage counselling.
Unfortunately, this place of happiness and blossoming creativity is now in ruins. But with your help, we will ensure the Yeshiva is rebuilt and restored. Our goal is to raise $70,000 towards this effort. Please give generously!
You can donate through BAYT toward this critical initiative. Donate either diectly online at www.bayt.ca/payment.php and select Community Liason Sponsor or call 905‐886‐3810 ext. 133
